I'm Laurice (you can call me Lau for short) and I draw portraits.
I want to sketch more, and draw faster. Will you please help me?
I want to freelance for Magic The Gathering!
I aspire to join the industry of entertainment design.
I want to learn how to do concept paintings – But right now, my skill isn't really geared towards it.
I enjoyed looking at some really good ones here, and now I finally mustered the courage to start a sketchbook of my own. Updating will be a challenge for me, as I often fail to get myself to draw regularly; but it's all worth it.
I started out drawing people's faces about eight years ago, stopped for about two and a half years (which I regret so much.) and I finally found my direction and purpose now.
Here's where I'm presently at! (as far as a "finished drawing")
The first three are in graphite and the last one is digital.
(after this wave will come my very recent sketches)
Some REALLY nice drawings and studies! I'm obsessed with those lip studies! INCREDIBLE! Keep posting! Can't wait to see more!
Lawl @ me being obsessed with "!" !!!!!!! I use ! TOO MUCH xD !!!!!
@Patonki: Thanks! I'll work on environments
@cuptow555: Thank you! I'll try to have this regularly updated..
Here's a few more..
I've done a painting of Darth Vader a few months back. This is my first attempt at doing something more than just a study. I tried to keep it painterly by not refining the strokes to the max.. I know Vader can't do force lightning.. but what if he could? so far, this is the only finished colored painting that i've done.
here are some color studies. not much recently
first image: bouguereau study
2nd image: zhang ziyi wip (sorry this is the second time i referenced her)
my school org's been taking a chunk of my time.. how can i impose more time for drawing?
how do you guys balance everything so well?
Wow, very inspiring work! I think this one is my favorite. (I'm a sucker for realism that fades into sketchiness, heh.)
And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.
in2eternity: Aaw thanks. I'm working on my speed. I seem to be really slow.
manlybrian: I like Sierra too! I'm also digging this style. I kind of want to do small-time commissions with it. I don't know.
some more sketches.. studies of my friends and self-portraits of me with the mirror and photo.
Why is it hard to do self portraits with the mirror? Do you look at some parts and sort of imagine them on paper? Because for sure, you can't stay in place the whole time you're drawing yourself... i'm puzzled.
Watched Feng Zhu's instructional videos on youtube and tried to redraw the van.. but failed.
Your doing great, keep it up! Drawing your self in the mirror is hard but it's really just translating from 3D into 2D.
I read your post in the art discussion forums. I think it's great you reconize that your uncomfortable with drawing quickly. It's a matter of learning to balance quick studies and finished images. It's a great skill to be able to finish an image and it's a good skill to just be able to sketch. So if your uncomfortable with doing sketches just work on that sooner or later you will start getting more comfortable with it.
Really great work here, nice strong lines in your pencil work. Hope to see more from you, take care.
boah your pencil work.. blahblahblah awesome blahblah..
are you an art student? I simply love your faces. yeah some of them are wonky, but really, you got it. you pencils.. I am repeating myself sorry. I completely dig your shading and the looseness despite the small and clear lines.
Fantastic, hope to see more!
beautiful portraits, and those lip studies are great! Also really like your environment sketches, do some more of those, you have something there
@G_U_T_S: Thank you! I'm working on some more.
@LordLouis: Yes, I'm an art student. I wish I was taking fine art though instead of the course I'm currently in. I also want to try to do better with digital, because it really feels different from drawing on paper.
@Hunin: Thanks for seeing some potential in my environments! I tried making some environment sketches in the computer but I realized there's just so much to take note of compared to when i just sketch
I got this when I was making an environment sketch. And re-did the apple I made before. I'm glad it looks a lot better now.
oooh nice values in the last set of studies
In the past week, I opened a blog over at blogspot so I could post daily sketches, and so far, it's been working great.
Here are some figure drawing studies I did while at school.
There's something wrong with my environments
I don't know what it is but I feel like it's the depth, and everything. And the focal point. I tried drawing huts, but I can't see them as clearly in my head.
Sorry I forgot, I also tried drawing from imagination what looks like cartoons.
Somehow cartoon-ey, and still kind of pushing to a little bit of realistic in the way the body is structured. I don't know.
if you're having trouble with environments from imagination, try doing some studies from photos and focus on value. I think the problem with the ones in post #21 is the contrast is too high - you're only painting with black and white for most of the image. And part of that area is actually the middleground, which appears to be quite some distance from the viewer. Save your highest contrast for focal points and the immediate foreground; that will help give the piece a sense of order and space. Also, use refs. If you can't visualize the huts you're trying to draw, find photos of huts and use them to figure out what your huts will look like.
