Assignment Two – Basics of structure and design
Draw at least 20 thumbnails of human(oid) characters. Feel free to draw more.
2. Structured drawing practice – human figures
a. Draw at least 10 human figure study using basic geometry. Use reference.
b. Draw another 10 without reference. Feel free to draw more.
3. (optional) Create a personal piece
Restrictions and guidelines for Task 1
- You can create costumed char design, gesture thumbs or exaggerated characters – it’s up to you. Do it your way.
- It’s recommended to keep it simple. Neither shading nor color is necessary. If one can tell that the sketch shows a character and not an apple or a laser gun, then it’s fine
Restrictions and guidelines for Task 2
1. Use full body refs!
The ref should show the whole figure. No closeups!2. Focus on structure
The goal of the second task is not to practice human anatomy or proportion but to practice structured drawing. As we haven’t discussed human anatomy yet sticking to proportions of an ideal human body (as described by Loomis and others) is not mandatory at this time. You can exaggerate if you'd like to. Use the reference only as a guide how body parts are connected and related to each other.3. Avoid clothes
Drawing the body is our main goal. You can use clothed reference for the challenge’s sake but even in this case you should draw the geometry of the body. Drawing clothes on the body is optional.4. Try not to use Photoshop
5. Good sources of reference
Photoshop is just not the right tool to create linedrawings. Neither line smoothing nor pressure sensitivity simulates traditional drawing tools adequately. Playing around with brush settings you can come up with something similar to pencil still if you want to stick to digital I’d recommend using another product. Sketchbook pro, Artrage, Painter or Manga studio are all better choices than Photoshop to create a nice linedrawing. If you don’t have any of these you can still take the good old pencil and paper.
Restrictions and guidelines for Task 3
Choose one of the thumbnails you’ve created, draw a structured rendering based on that thumbnail and jump into rendering. Using references for parts of the pic is okay, copying whole photographs is restricted.
