So being relatively new to this digital art thing, and after approximately dicking around for a week, I finally did something worthwhile on the computer. I did have one digital illustration course which was a more or less squandered opportunity, but I'll be trying to make up for my once wily ways here.
I would gladly read any feedback. I'm no stranger to honest, serious critiques.
Subject: Robot character, it's an encaustic monotype "sketch" with digital paint. The others are some pencil sketches and preliminaries for other illustrations in the project.

The digital painting feels nice and relatively non digital. I would maybe clean up the edges around the robot, mostly on the right side of the picture. It's a bit distracting.
I like the shape of that fox creatures head.
On the "factory" drawing. I'm assuming there are three holes in the ceiling with light shining through. They look a bit odd, perhaps because they are narrowing together a bit.
Maybe look at some reference photos of how light shines through holes.
Usually light seems to spread out after going through the hole:
But it probably also depends on perspective as well.

Hey, thanks for the response! I've made a few more prints and I'll be sitting down at the computer to paint on them and keep developing my new process. Probably see some more digital paint sketches next update.
Misplacedhippos: That was a great photo, thanks for taking the time to find one. The factory sketch was a preliminary, and the lighting did look more natural in the finished illustration. I can definitely see how the extraneous marks on the robot can be distracting, I'll see what it looks like to dial back the texture around the figure. Accidental marks like that are part of why I like printmaking and why I'm trying to incorporate it into my illustration process, I just need to find a good balance between legibility and character.

Typically pencil, markers, colored pens, watercolors and gouache. Thanks for the kind word. Though I may be new here, I got my BFA recently, though my illustration teachers were mainly coming from a perspective of editorial and advertising illustration since print media like packaging design is so big in minnesota. Someone told me about this community and I've been wanting to re-align my portfolio so I can apply for some concept artist positions in about a year (I can't travel until then unfortunately!). It definitely helps motivate me to have a community.
It sure has been a few months. Here's a random selection of some stuff I've done in the meantime. Some of these are just more practice getting familiar with digital color, and a couple pencils. I should probably post more regularly, I've got no lack of things to put up.
Some armor, a classical type lady, breakfast, a computer made out of your deceased mutant cyborg ancestors, a dungeon hallway, some dead things, and a man in a bear suit.
Another warmup from this morning. I don't feel like I'm making much progress with this stuff. I'm also working on some projects I can't post about yet, but I'm working with these tools almost everyday, and while I'm getting faster It's just not coming together in quite a satisfying way. If anyone can point me to your favorite advanced tutorials I would appreciate it.
Here's a WIP from one of the sketches I posted earlier today. I'm just doing it up for practice/portfolio purposes. Please give me some feedback on this, I'd really love to hear it. I'm working on developing this technique of watercolor base + digital paint + photomontage so let me know what you think works or doesn't work. I was out taking photos of texture-fields to start building a collection and I put a few in here so far. Is the photomontage okay as an accent or does it need more support? How's the color palette? It also needs darker values before it'll be finished.
I'm also slowly continuing to push the painting aspect further and stop relying on my drawing skills alone, which is more my comfort zone.
I may not be the most reliable in terms of advice, but I find you're boldly and beautifully stepping out of your comfort zone. Darker values would certainly help push mid and background elements from the figure. What I'm really interested in, however, is your traditional multi media paintings, which may lack the cohesion of your more recent efforts, but they have a gorgeous sense of energy that I admire greatly.

I get what you mean. I wish the original watercolor washes showed through a bit more in this piece, but it's kind of been lost here. I definitely had a better balance of different techniques in a previous piece I did (but I won't be showing for a little while, it's for a game book that isn't published yet).
Another WIP of a painting from one of the above sketches. It's about 50% done I'd say. Critique would be welcome as always, talk amongst yourselves I'll give you a topic; Are the photographic textures too dominant? Color pallette too limited? What is your opinion of the drapery in this one?
