I'm Tonio from Spain, I have been looking conceptart's sketchbooks for a long time and I have just decided to create a profile and try to upload my sketchbook.
I've 31 and I though that it was late for me start to draw, but I have ever wanted to learn. I'll upload my sketches as ofthen as I can. I wait comments and suggestions to learn and improve my skills (but I think I don't have any skill at the moment ).
Thanks a lot to all.
Hi and congratulations on your sketchbook. I know excactly how you feel about being too old even though i´m a bit younger at 26. But don´t let that discourage you and just keep on going. I´m liking your sketchbook and you´ve already taken another step in the journey of getting better by opening a sketchbook here Looking forward to seeing your progress
I started to draw my first self-portrait last week (took me about 2 hours), I want to start to paint it as soon as possible but I am afraid about the colour theory, how to make a good flesh color, I will send the progress. (canvas 80x60 cm)

It's never too late to start, all it takes is determination, hard work and of how much actual time you put in, just never give up, ever!
Not much advice I can give you for the colur theory as I'm not very fluent in it myself. Try experimenting a little and see what works well. Generally all it takes create a caucasion tone, is some yellow, little red and white. naples yellow, cadmium red, titanium white, with occasional use of burnt umber and sienna, though remember that your not actaully painting the skin but rather the light reflected off, so dont be afraid to use mix in other tones along with the 'flesh' tones. Hope this helps.
Exon needs your critique!
FourTonMantis: Thanks a lot man !!!
Exon-Ion: Thanks, I will try these colours for the flesh and I will post the progress.
This pages I have done today. Head study from Loomis and hands from photo reference. I see that I need to improve the confidence of my lines, and practice more the heads that I think is the most difficult.
Yiehaaaaa !!!! Draw, draw, draw ...
I try to learn drawing by myself but also I go painting classes 4 hours a week, only in my free time (when my work let me do it ).
This is my 4th oil painting, i will try to upload the last 3 that I painted.
I took me about mmmm.... 20 hours, (I know, I am very slow.... )
Critics and suggestions are welcome.
And the final version !!!!!
Awesome painting! Really like the detail of the cloth and it's your 4th oil painting !
This drawings i did when I was in the beach while my girlfriend was sleeping , I think that they are bad and make me think that i have to draw a lot if i want to improve. I have problems with faces, with shading, i don't know how to use the pencil (so i have to practice shading charts)..... so i draw man !!!!!!!
the faces look really good to me. i can t tell about the resemblance ofc, but the positioning of the "elements" looks good.
And also about the shading, i am not good at it either. All i know is that you shouldn t use the tip of the pencil for this, but the side. (i am guilty of this myself)
Also , found this nice article about how to hold the pencil, and kinda helped me see what i did wrong. Maybe it will help

ajtabril- Very encouraging SB man. Its never too late to start. What's important now is that you've started drawing and making good progess. Learn to love making mistakes as it'll make you a better artist.
Regards to pencil sketching, use the tip of your pencil for detail and light sketching and work from the wrist. For rendering, use the side of your pencil, keep your wrist stationary and work the movement from your shoulder using the whole arm (perhaps you'll already know that though lol).
Great studies so far! Your oil painting is absolutely great, I want to have a crack at oils one day soon and if my fourth attempt is as good as yours I'll be very happy
I'm older than you, so no excuses for not learning. The still life is very good and shows your observational skills off very well. Looks like you're going to be up to speed in no time flat.
I have just done it, photo references, about 2 hours drawing. The most dificult, to draw inside the mouth.....
I want to try draw with digital tablet, but i don't know if i could do it (increases the difficulty, not only learning to draw, now learning painting software ) But I see loads of incredible digital paintings here.
Teeth are very difficult to get the shade right and you've done pretty well with them.
i am exploring new mediums (watercolours, copy from one book, but the colour it's from imagination) and trying to learn the Bourguereau's colour (so difficult), i only finish the first spirit coat. Maybe it's more important to learn anatomy but i wanted to try. All the uploads are WIP, except the pencils, that they are finished. Always the same, suck the shadows.
Why the red outline? I think it is distracting to the whole picture and getting the colours right. If you want an outline try using a colour closer to the final as possible.
Great work so far, your oil painting is very well done and looks very lifelike and good looking. Keep up the good work, i can't wait to see more.
