World of the Living Dead is a map-based survival strategy game currently in closed beta, with a realistic approach to the needs of survivors and their precarious position in a world filled with hostile walking corpses.
Our preference is for the slow, dead and mindless zombie rather than the modern fast infected. WotLD zeds are not particularly interested in eating brains over any other flesh, and have no intelligence beyond that which is needed to stagger after the living and bite when the opportunity occurs.
References should be Romero's Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. Robert Kirkman's excellent The Walking Dead could also be considered as a source of inspiration, although the artwork doesn't have to mimic that style, just the bleak attitude towards survival in the zombocalypse.
Style requirements are very loose, although cute zombie cartoons probably wouldn't fit (you might be able to persuade us). We're open to suggestions and concepts, though, so please contact us if you think you have a style which might bring something different to the game. We don't necessarily want all images to be be zombie-centric.
We need the following, not necessarily all from the same artist. These are just to give you an idea of what we need in case you see something that fits with your style. Artists who like to draw zombies, and especially hordes of zombies, are also welcome to send us their details.
- Character illustrations. Think grizzled old ex-military survivalist or hip gamer girl channelling a combination of Alice from Resident Evil and Barbara from Tom Savini's 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. The apocalypse is recent in WotLD, so we don't need the characters to be as apocalyptic as in The Road, The Postman, Fallout 3 or the later incarnations of Mad Max.
- Icons to illustrate and differentiate the individual character skills available. These would need to be dynamic and convey the sometimes abstract concepts which can be developed (such as an improved ability to scavenge or make food last longer). The dimensions of these would preferably be able to range from 32x32 pixels to 256x256 pixels.
- Location images to be used to represent the locations which players can visit in the game. Hospitals, schools, libraries, police stations, malls. Looted, sometimes burned out and always threatening, with debris and bodies scattered around.
We're a very small team so our budget is definitely limited, but we understand and have experience of the value of artwork and the effort involved. There would be recurring work (and hopefully a bigger budget) as the game develops and expands.
WotLD is very much in the final stages before open beta and release, so any work commissioned will be used within the next couple of months and would be expected to reach a large number of players.
Please send approximate rates and estimates of availability for the next month or so along with samples of your work or a portfolio link to firstname.lastname@example.org
