I'm a 3D artist and I am looking to advance my concept skills as far as using photoshop. I can sketch, just never got the best handle of coloring.
Its no done but here are a few shots of progress so far.

Right now I'm not buying the armor as metal. The highlights are too diffused and broad. Take a look at some photos of various metals and look at how the light and shadow play across the forms. I like the crouched action of the pose but I'm confused as to what is going on, or what is going to happen. It feels a bit like an in between moment of some kind. Play up the drama, exaggerate the posture if you need, it's all in service of making a bold image and telling an exciting story. Make your images have as much conviction as you do. Color is a pretty big area of study, so don't get discouraged, just keep trying things and working from life, photos and memory. Look at old master paintings and see how they manipulate color. Look closely, you'll find some unexpected color choices in skin tones or shadows. Their works can be excellent teachers. Keep at it and you'll find your color and structure improving quickly.
i would try and stay away from the texture filters in photoshop
it looks like you used the canvas one for his pants
you should first try to work out the figure and color and only add textures and finer details in the areas that you really want to bring out.
i wouldnt use so much black in this. realistically you will never really find pure black anywhere

Stay away from dodge and burn. Right now you need to work on shading basic shapes in black and white, with the normal blending mode. Although you could spend a lot of time building up your drawing skills before tackling painting. Sorry if that's a let down. I know it sucks to be at the beginning. It sucks to be in the middle too so get used to it
