"The superior man is distressed by the limitations of his ability; he is not distressed by the fact that men do not recognize the ability that he has."
"The Cosmos is also within us, we are made of star stuff. We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself." - Carl Sagan
I don't know about you guys but this blew my mind when I first heard it. The same kinds of atoms that make up galaxies at the edge of the universe also made us. That's where atoms come from, stars. The death and birth of stars. It's not too far of a stretch to consider that maybe an atom in you and an atom in your computer may have come from the same star.
The universe is part of us. We have the ability to study and understand the universe so it's like the universe is studying itself. Thinking about this is really exhilarating, at least to me.
No matter who you are, you are a part of everything else. We are all components of the universe. These day-to-day things that we busy ourselves with ultimately don't matter in the face of that.
I just wish we could come together as a species and work for our advancement. Regardless of race, nationality, sex, religious denomination, etc we have the ability to do amazing things. Things that no other species or living organism, to our knowledge, has done. If we could just work together for the good of mankind we could be halfway across the milkyway by now. Living on mars.
I know there are cynical people who think that it's an impossible dream, that humans will never work together in such a way. But if there were enough of us who think otherwise, things could change. And I don't mean sappy "HOPE" political figurehead change. I mean honest, mass paradigm shifting, social reconstructive change.
Sorry, I am not a philosopher and I don't really know if what I said matches the point of this thread. I just want to get it out there in hopes that there are others, maybe here, that feel like I do. I'm existing as human and this is what I feel, so I hope that somewhat qualifies me.
"Astronomy offers an aesthetic indulgence not duplicated in any other field. This is not an academic or hypothetical attraction and should require no apologies, for the beauty to be found in the skies has been universally appreciated for unrecorded centuries."
