For a description see Michael Jaecks' lengthy brief in the WIP thread.

*NOTE: The seal is the royal seal of Henry VIII (and not my design).

Concept: Piscis Sanguinis

The Piscis Sanguinis was defined as such in November of 1545 following the incident in Portsmouth where a school of "fish men" attacked Henry VIII's ship the Mary Rose and the victims of the attack were found drained of blood with what was described as vampiric bitemarks on their necks, armpits and ankles.

Underneath is a piece of evidence secured after the case had gone cold with a local artist's rendition after eyewitness accounts.

Concept: Deep Maiden
A distant relative of the nudibranch that normally wander the deepest parts of the ocean, the incident in 1527 may have been a show of abnormal behavior when an overly large population of these creatures desperately sought an alternative source of food. Using the sucker-like organ that usually attaches these blood-suckers to kraken and other monsters of the abyss, they crawled aboard the ship on that terrible day to satiate a ravenous hunger.

The sea was rough that evening, but nothing compared to the carnage to come. As the officer of the watch, it was my duty to keep an eye out for trouble, warn the others of their impending doom. I failed. I did not hear them as they slinked their filthy tentacled menace onto the ship smelling the air to make sure the bodies on board were sleeping. Even the man in the crows nest missed their arrival but was unfortunate enough to bear witness to one of the worst massacres ever carried out at sea, that is until they climbed their way up to him and ripped off his head.

I was lucky to be the first one to die.

Only thing I can add to the OP is that this creature gets up on its hind legs to make itself more intimidating and can have a vague silhouette of a man.

Concept: Bloodsucker of Portsmouth

Although originating in the United Kingdom, these creatures live in the majority of the North Atlantic. The Eskimo of North America referred to them as: "K'lik" which means: "Those who will arise from the water to steal your first born and devour your seal hides, thus rendering both biological and financial futures for you inert."

Concept: Bloody, Buggery, Curly-Headed Bloodsuckers of Portsmouth
In 1527, King Henry VIII constructed Southsea Castle in Portsmouth, England. Henry had built the castle with moneys from the dissolution of the monasteries of England, following his break with the Catholic Church. During the construction of Southsea Castle, and unbeknownst to Henry and his court, a terrific nest of undead, aquatic horrors were awoken and stirred. They would lie dormant in the sludge and waters off Southsea Castle for another 18 years, gathering strength by feeding off the offal of the sea, having slumbered beneath the new foundation of Southsea Castle for centuries. On October the 31st, 1545, Henry would return to Southsea to admire his naval ships in advance of an attack he had planned against the French Naval Fleet. During a dinner at the castle, when the full moon had reached its peak in the sky Henry and his court witnessed a horror unlike any in recorded history. Around the shores of Southsea Castle a great, roiling school of sea monsters broke the surface of the water, swam out en masse to Henry's vice-flagship, the Mary Rose, boarded it, razed the ship, killed all 500 sailors and crew on board, and sank the Mary Rose into the sea. The creatures disappeared into the sea and were never seen again. Bodies recovered from the massacre revealed vampire-like bite marks on each of the victims around the necks, armpits and ankles. Descriptions of the creatures appearance varied greatly, but most described them as vaguely human-sized and gaunt, with shiny, pale, hideous skin, and each bore a great, voluminous, curly mane of dark, oily hair. Some witnesses described them as 'fish-men'. Others thought they looked more serpentine with limbs. Upon realizing the extent of the massacre the creatures had caused to his Navy, Henry was said to have exclaimed "Bloody, buggery, curly-headed bloodsuckers!!" Although few in Henry's court would speak of their belief openly, many viewed this unspeakable attack as God's vengence for the dissolution of the Catholic monasteries and the use of the funds garnished from said dissolution in building Southsea Castle.

All right. Well, that's a pretty lengthy brief. A few words about this historical device. We're still looking for new, interesting, exciting creature design. I'm not really looking for something that looks typical of antiquity or mythology. Remember that often in literature, descriptions of creatures like this can be vague because the author or witnesses never really got a good look at what they were describing. Think for a moment if you had witnessed an attack by HR Giger's Xenomorph Alien (from the movies) but only had a chance to see the creature for 5-10 seconds. Would you be able to give a clear description? So let's keep in mind that we're designing this creature, in keeping with the brief, yes, but also trying to put forward something new and exciting. We're looking for something aquatic, pale, about the size of a man, but not strictly humanoid, vampiric, undead, with a big huge mane of dark curly hair or fur, and a taste for blood.

Little is known about the origins of these grotesque creatures. Bland and slow, yet vicious and untiring, these nameless horrors of the depths have been haunting the minds and hearts of generations, since the well known incident of Portsmouth.
Their slow pace and long periods of complete immobility cause them to become hosts to several kinds of sea-life, being the most notorious case, the kelp that grows from inside and over their bodies, creating what many people have described as an "oily black mane".

this creature also known as "the water snake man",due to the fact that when you see it from adar it looks like a water snake man due to its humanoid posture and lower snake body, live near rocky places with underground caves and was released originally from an underwater sealed caves near portsmouth. when you get close enough to see that its not a snake man like creature but a vicious predator seeking his next meal ,and btw ....it like human flesh !, well...if youve seen that then most chances you wont live to tell anyone although there were a few survivors over the course of years.it usually bits its pray with it's tentacle like fingers (which have a hollowed tooth at the end ,perfect for blood sucking ) .

While those creatures are usually seen on the open sea, sometimes their sick curiosity and taste for human blood drives some of them near populated areas. Being very agile and predator-intelligent, they can use their camouflage abilities to imitate movements and shape of it's victims.

A depiction of the ocean dwelling undead monstrosities that sunk the Rose Mary beneath the waves in 1527, at the harbor of Portsmouth. Said to be undead "fish-men", they sported long tails, an undead gaunt and disturbing human features. Whether real or imagined, and whatever they really were, they did sink the flagship of Henry VIII of Britain, and slaugtered all aboard.

i voted scorge.I could have voted for dcept or wiggers if it would be multivote.dcept´s is the most buggery-one and i really like the style. Wiggers is very nice but not that original.I think lots of entrys looked a bit like the swampthing.
Scorge´s is not skinny enough and a bit to big than i would have imagined from the briefing but i think he got some original ideas in his design .and the background is good also.Ikhfdsja(....)might be the most original one straying away from the swampthing - style but it looks a bit unfinished.
Josu´s entry shows also an different very interesting approach.
Harmageddon made an nice painting - pitty that the scan turned out so blurry!
sepu made some real exotic beast but also straying a bit far from the briefing.
evolvigeye got defenetly a nice swampthing even with swamp and all
acb looks like the king of the corral reef - nice but real not bloody-buggery
Duman also a bit off-topic i think but it´s a real nice seamonster anyway !
1oshuart got an nice start with this fishy guy !
Pomelo it´s an bizarre and bloody creature - but well -if youd added some skinny and undead features would be better....
evil sloth real nice illustration - but to be honest it looks more like a disguised dragon to me than an aquatic horror...
Duman would like to see the whole body.... but it´s also an very good pic.
Draught´s is really great- but then it´s a bit swampthingy again and maybe missing some highlights and details.
Mitchking very nice watercreature - but not really skinny...

okay - i think this was an awesome round . I liked that the briefing was so detailed and i really had a hard time to combine every aspects of it in my creature.
All in all i think some entries are very far from the concept but everybody showed alot of creativity.

sorry if i forgot some folks....might come back later !
