ROUND #164 :: NEWBORNDESCRIPTION
Two week special! Chow, along with the other weeklies, have been invited to participate in the CA-wide contest 'Newborn'.
Pretty open topic this time, and we're only going to narrow it down a few ways.
1.) You must start a new piece just for chow. Since Newborn allows multiple entries, this means that either you'll finally get a start on one, or you'll have a second to enter by the final deadline.
2.) It must be character-centric, and follow chow rules. So you must be able to see 3/4ths (at least) of the character.
3.) The character must embody the idea of Newborn. But not necessarily literally! Think creation, folks - creator, or creation, it's up to you. Keep in mind that CoW is doing something as well, so make sure you're in the character direction, not the creature direction. You will want to include the character in a background (abstract or realized) and it can be of more complex narrative too. Idea development and design are key!
We know it's very open this week, but we hope this will inspire you to be part of the contest and support CA!

awesome, i was hoping to join the newborn challenge and this will be a good incentive to get a start on it... i really hope everyone jumps on board for this challenge... im sure you all will!
I might be having a bit of problem with how open this is...Does the new life form have to be new, or could it be something "renewed" or "reborn" or "reanimated"...for some reason vampires are springing to mind...
Well, I already started on the newborn challenge, but it never hurts to have second piece I guess
Ideas popping into my head. I'll roll up my sleeves and join this one as well.
Im already working a bunch on my main newborn entry and A bunch of short film story boards, but i will have to try this one as well!
May have time for this one.
Busy deciding whether to stay at school or not, so then again might not.
I take back my decision.
From now on, I'll be doing only work for the Newborn Competition, and I'll probably get a character or two done.
Good luck to all!
Ive been thinking about this for awhile and I love that Chow is helping it. Glad it has 2 weeks 2 cause that will help the polishing for the Final entry to shine.
My first Newborn concept is going Sci-Fi with my Concept of S.O.R.A
>special operations robotic assassin< with the First prototype being activated.
This is a very rough mock but I want to show an assembly area with unfinished SORA and construction parts.
I feel this fits the Brief for Newborn but if you dont think so or have crits please let me know.
my second concept I may develop is Angels blood creating Fairies, but that may be to abstract for a imagineFX cover. (although I have little chance of winning, I need to tailor it to the client =P )
My thought was of a dragon who chooses to become a woman for love. She sits thinking of her lost self and this new body/life she has received.
Darklogic - I like your idea. I've always liked thinking about the "what ifs" regarding artificial intelligence.
I'm so freaking in! I'll start working up some sketches until my shiny new tablet laptop comes in a few days.
well I thought of newborn and what came to mind was rebirth and birth and this was what my pencil and I came up with. So far I can't decide which so I'm going to do all three maybe not submit them all but definitely finish them. Big deal for me but i love them too much to discard them.
Now in hind sight the genie needs something to bring about her initial birth I have a few ideas but it requires reading so i'll get back to you.
The genie, the fairy (seriously no one knows where they come from) and the last/ first breath of a vampire. Ah the sweetness of ideas. Looking forward to seeing everyone else's entries.
Chance to win = 0
Any comments are gratefully received.
whooptiedoo, and we're off again. Did a little more planning on the pose (read: some minor scribbling during work) than usual, so I actually have a solid idea. It's a bit of a spin-off from my main Newborn piece which has a more ethereal take on the birth of a deity. This is a more foul, icky and earthly look at the birth of one.
Good luck everbody!
Pixeltuner very cool looking pose, very icky looking as you call it
May I ask what type of brushes you use? is it Painter or PS?
Thank you! Well, I use a lot of different brushes for different effects but for this one I stuck with a normal hard round brush, with opacity set to pressure sensitivity and flow at 23% (anywhere in between 20 and 30 is allright to me)
And it's just basic Photoshop
Damn, I am stil clueless on this one, but it's a great topic!
Pixeltuner: looking sweet, love the pose! Haha, lately I love sketching with a hard round at 25% flow myself, it's kinda got a nice look
GOT IT! whoo, time to put it into use Thanks Pixeltuner
