Oil Painting with Gary Kelley Available 5/18/09!

In this video renowned illustrator Gary Kelley walks us through a modern adaptation of an ancient subject: Clio, muse of history. Working spontaneously Gary allows the piece itself to tell him the placement of his next brush strokes. Throughout this process he shares his thoughts about the particular decisions he's making as well as the people and ideas that have influenced his highly successful career. Anyone looking for a little good old fashioned mental stimulation about art will definitely want to pick this one up.

Wow, I just don't know. This is way out of my normal range of understanding. If anyone could post some comments about this one it would be much appreciated.

Any genuine artist ought to be at the edge of their understanding. I'll refrain from reviewing this title for the sake of neutrality, but I will say that I'm happy to have something outside the usual range of CA as part of our library. It's never a bad thing to have exposure to a variety of approaches and ideas.

I'm of the same thought as ManaBurn.

I am also suprised you are still releasing downloads. I thought you might have stopped them now for the transition into the streaming service (when is that happening anyway?).

I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded this either, so I'll share my opinion. I watched about half of it last night while simultaneously drawing and thought it was awesome. I didn't really find it to be a "how to paint" video, though he does talk about what he's doing every once in a while. Mostly it's him talking about art and life and giving advice as he's painting, which I found really interesting. It's nothing like the Machess video where you see almost every stroke go down. So far, I think anyone with any interest in art would enjoy this. I'm looking forward to watching the rest tonight.

Gary Kelley had a big impact on me when I studied with him about eleven years ago. He is an artist to the core and has more biz and illustration knowledge in that head of his than just about anyone I have come across. His work varies as to his stylistic whims at times and honestly, that is one of the things I like best about his stuff...that he has found ways to do the kind of work he wants. I learned a ton from him.

If what you say is true then it sounds similar to the Youtube videos by Bobby Chiu. Which is a good thing by the way.

I bought Mr. Kei's clothing video, but I think I will dish some more out for this.

havent downloaded yet but just for those people on the fence.... when i was in college one of my art teachers was more of an (abstract, impressionist or what ever ) oil painter. I wanted the whole slick photorealistic style..... of all the projects i keep from school the 'fruit on the tables' from his class is my favorite. I beleive something like this type of teaching forces you to forget everything and stop wondering what is right ,wrong or supossed to be and just let your mind create...... I will be getting this soon. Actually i have stopped downloading waiting for streaming to start but may just sneak this on in

I would agree. A constant worry about always doing things the "right" way is a surefire way to kill the creative process.

As the streaming will be more expensive, would it not be best to buy as many now before it begins?

What Gary Kelly is a master of is making PICTURES, and that's something that all the anatomy books, life drawing, and technique tutorials in the word will never teach you.

This video is amazing for anyone interested in composition and art history. This video is about art and not a true demonstration (such as the Santos video) on how to paint.

I found it very helpful and has pricked my interest in modernism even more.

Thank you for another amazing download. Kelley has a ton to say and I find that just as interesting as his picture making. If this is anything like his pastel demo then it is money well spent. Now if Massive Black would only make Kelley working on a monotype then the collection would be complete! Hint hint! How about a Kelley trillogy?

Or make it like the 24 series where the story never truly ends?

Yeah I am a huge fan of Gary. His words were instrumental in my business knowledge and he makes picture making look so easy...he is truly an inspiration.

Man my payment just went through on this and the first part of the greg manchess demo, and I have to say, that 30 dollars is nothing to pay for the amount of inspiration, motivation, and education that these two videos have given me.

I'm definitely picking up the 2 part pastel demo he gives, and the 2nd part of the manchess demo now. Fantastic work MB, and I can't thank you guys enough for making this type of stuff available for the great price its at.

The music is always top notch too.

I guess is my own fault to not read the forum before buying this. While it is still very interesting, The vidz is more like a ''1 hour Discussion'' with the painter. If your looking for a ''how to'' I would recommend Coro Alla Prima or maybe Dos Santos ( Havent seen it yet )

I hope this sounds right, but man did he go FAST with his thoughts! I was like, "Whoa, what? Wait!" Sooooooo much info!! I'm not used to that much info into an artist's thoughts, I admit, and for me, I think this video would suit me even more if I get into doing oils, so I can understand other standpoints on oil paintings.

I think though, it's a very useful video, and I KNOW it's worth keeping, at least to get an idea of how another artists thinks of another medium. His thoughts are so rich, and just because I can't keep up (so slow! ;_; ) doesn't mean that his words aren't worth rewinding back to several times...which I did and was intrigued.

I love the way he talks about his thought processes.

I once listened to a lighting electrician talking about the way he went about the things he did. I probably understood one word in three, but his passion inspired me, and I understood some of it. Win!

Gary talks about his roots, his connections to other artists, the places he comes from. A lot of us could connect to and understand that.

I don't know about anybody else, but I find it a privilege when somebody takes the time to say the processes they go through to arrive at their destination, because it helps me use and/or discard the ideas I have.
