update II: more art posted on page 4

update: more art posted on page #2 & 3 + Spectrum Exhibit news & art on page #3

Hi all-

It's been a long while since I posted here... I thought I'd come out of my cave and share a few things on concept art... these are mainly cover illos for Marvel & Dark Horse comics and some art for my personal project. Some of these are not really too recent, so you might have seen some of them.

One is a new cover for Squardron Supreme #11 for Marvel comics. (out next month)

I'm posting some WIP versions too... all the pencils, ink, and colors are my work... the linework is all traditional and the color is digital.

Also I'm posting a few illos from my creator owned concept project "Chaos Destiny" (some older ones)... some of these drawings are available as prints on the site www.mastersinprint.com They also have galleries and prints from H.R. Giger and Stephan Martiniere on that site.

art posted:

-The Throne- unpublished ink version
-Squadron Supreme #11 Cover art due out in May 2009 from Marvel
- Kull #1 cover art
- Kull #3 cover art
- Kull- early concept design/ sketch (not used)
- Wicked Wolf- art for limited edition book cover and t-shirt design from Wicked Jester
Available only on their site: Wicked Jester site- art used on "The Virus" book and T

Chaos Destiny (my creator owned concept project)
-Athan Cyprus (underground version)
-Sevora (green version)
-Dark Skulls: concept sketches

Great stuff. That first one reminds me of a back-in-the-day Savage Sword of Conan artist named Tim Conrad.

Such amazing attention to detail. I can only imagine how many of those pens you go through in a single illustration.

I must say though, somehow you're work is a lot more striking and powerful in black and white. The coloring job (though really good) makes your stuff blend in with other comic art I think. That's just me though.

The line work is sick. What books or tutorials, if any, do you recommend for inking? Or any general rule of thumb you go by when inking.

I like the b/w lineart drawings, but I am not a fan of the marvel-stile color works.

Nice to watch

damn... your attention to detail is astounding. i love how all the detail isn't just focused on the characters, the environments are extremely detailed as well, but not overpowering. its all very balanced.
killer work man. very impressive.

hey thanx for the comments they are all appreciated... I'll reply to the ones where I have something more to say than "thanx"

NathanLong- That one was supposed to be Kull ( a cover for Dark Horse's Kull comic) though really it ended up looking more like Conan... lol, the characters are, of course, very similar and both from Robert E. Howard's writings. I'm not familiar with Tim Conrad's work, I'll have to look it up.

Tyler- yep, sounds like a good idea ... I think some of those dragon sketches and the skull ones where results of drink & draw... all I know is I end up just drawing skulls with tongues usually.

Dave Lynch- Surprisingly, I don't go through many pens on an illo... the run down 005 microns seem to last a long time unless I have pressed too hard and the ends have split... then they don't work as well.
I definitely agree, that the B&W inks are more striking... when doing work for a publishing company though color is usually needed... I would, of course, love to see some of this stuff printed B&W... ink or just pencil even.... usually the companies fear it won't sell without color though.
All of these ones I colored myself and I'm trying to do a stylized coloring that won't hide all the line shading and still keep the mood of the drawings. I was pretty happy with the way the Kull #1 & #3 covers were printed by Dark Horse... The line art shows up on the covers and isn't overpowered by the color. It's really the best my art has looked in print on a comic.... & I'm sometimes not too happy with the printed art.

Titan- That Kull sketch was one of the initial concepts I had for the Dark Horse version of Kull... it was decided this was too grim and brooding to be Kull. He is supposed to be more of a thinker than a warrior, which is something they wanted to show in the character. So I tried to show that more in the first Kull cover. I would have loved to go with this more brooding Kull, but didn't want to destroy the character for long time fans of the Robert E. Howard book.... In the end I think my covers were still pretty disconnected from what Kull was supposed to be , but I gave it my best.

J-boogie- Well, the best thing to do to improve inking is to just ink a lot and be critical of your work... when I started drawing professionally I was inspired a lot by Bernie Wrightson's art from the 70's, so be sure to at least check out his Frankenstein book illustrations.
my rule of thumb is don't halo every damn thing on the page....try to avoid that flashy technique that was created by the devil.

Vaejoun-
I never felt my coloring was really Marvel style.... and to be honest neither does Marvel. The color ones here were actually for Dark Horse by the way. I definitely agree the art is more striking B&W though ... and I think most artists and people that have seen my originals agree on that.... now only if someone would publish them that way

here's a couple more things:

-In the Shadows- is an older RPG illo which more recently I added some digital shading. (blue tone)

-Athan Cyprus head sketch- is drawing I did of the main character for my own world... it was meant to just be a warm up sketch, though I thought it turned out decent... I was in a bit of a grumpy mood when I drew it, which is probably reflected in the character.
