I always benefit from a visit to Miss Rhubix's neck of the woods. : ) That recent animation discussion was especially beneficial! I'm really glad you enjoy helping other artists out so much, cause you're pretty darn good at it.
I agree, thanks for being so kind to us with your help. No doubt you're often busy yet you still make time which is quite awesome.
These environments are cool, well done. Would love to see more, even with color too. Strangely I like the tree's you did upfront alot, creates nice depth. Also, If your visual library isn't good, I'm doomed. HAHA. You have awesome skills, and the more improvement you make is going to be sweet. Thanks Rhubix for all the conversation, advice, and sharing your SB and all it's cool variety.
Dude your pieces are amazing, you have talent im really impress how you got better skills in a short time !
I'm glad it helped Dizzy Sun
I Stray I - I don't make time for CA, this is my me-time lol. If you ever met me in person you'd find out I'm a total gab-bag, and I love talking about drawing, cartoons and animation over all else.
also don't mistake visual library for fundamental progress. If someone asks me to draw a car it will look like a honda civic, or some equally boring vehicle. Someone like Lorenzo Etherington from studio blink twice will draw 45 completely different and insanely cool different cars.
I'm the type of artist that can take any one of his designs, and draw it from 4-5 different views. But It would take be hours of research to design just one as cool as any of his.
I am working on it though! trying to do studies from lots of styles- pay more attention to things in real life - really looking for interesting shapes and how things are put together.
I hope I never reach the place where I think my work is good, that's when you stop pushing yourself to get better.
Xizt - thanks so much
Bus sketches! I hope to find some sit- down time tomorrow- what a week!
Hey there & thanks for the advice. It is duly noted
I've just been trawling though this thread & the amount of work here is staggering. Most impressive is the consistently good quality of your drawings. You can see your style develop along the way too which is cool. And it's cool to find another lover of toons I love your characters loads, especially the way you can convey the character's personality right through from the facial expressions to the way the character holds themselves. Great stuff, I'll be bookmarking this thread for when inspiration is running low.
I was wondering if you could spare some advice about cartooning women? Guys & critters I have no problem with but women really have me stumped. Probably because I spend too much time drawing guys & critters ¬_¬
thanks SpaceJelly & n1frit
SB was up to 5 stars for 12 glorious hours haha- I guess I didn't have enough space marines or robots for someone- cuz it was knocked back to 4 pretty quick!
doodles and train sketches.
Now that you mention it, I'm curious what a Rhubix space marine and robot would look like. All gritty and smoldering with cartoony rage.
Added another 5-star rating!! I hope it will go back up soon - it deserves it.
Really liking your new updates. Those Enviros are awesome. And those sketches from life are always my favorite. You just seem to have so much fun when you are drawing (as revealed in your drawing- they are so lively). It reminds me that drawing are supposed to be fun... lol sometimes I get too caught up in studying that the drawing doesn't seem as enjoyable as it should be.
ps. Those are great gifts for artists... paper, post-its.. hahaha stationary are so fun to get XD
Another ratings boost from me, not that you were asking but I think you'll receive, and rightfully so!
diamandis - haha, asked for that. I drew a few little robots after reading your comment. Maybe this will be a sci-fi drawing weekend... hmm
Cabbage Caterpillar & I STRaY I - aw, you guys are sweet. I didn't know i only had to cry about it haha. Top right pen sketches are for you guys.
kamikazel33t - thanks so much ^_^
Thanks Sushy, as I said, I really didn't expect houses to help my figure drawing- but it does! so DO iiiit!
Spacejelly - thanks - I don't use the line tool - 90% of the time I use the default round brush. Definitely learn how to use all the tools though - and more importantly Learn your hot keys!!! At work I use the Toonboom software called Harmony - watching people sift through drop down menus instead of just pressing a button makes me want to tear off my own skin (I do a lot of tech support lol!)
Game of the day! I get lots of comments on my line work- here's the trick of it. Do this every day for 5 minuets - 30 days for better lines or your money back!
aaand some sketches
Hey thanks for the great advice in my sketchbook i really appreciate it, you've got some awesome line goin on here man, diggn your style as well.
I love the last buildings you posted, they look great =]
I'm a peacock, you gotta let me fly!
ooo those pen sketches are just lovely! Arrgh now I want to draw cartoons!!
*must not succumb to temptation yet...*
Thanks Freshfool, V3t
Harmageddon - every now and then won't hurt ;D
bit bigger than usual, ball point pen and fine tip sharpie
photoshop - trying to get away from lines
I meant to ask earlier: are the figures in post #706 from reference or from imagination? I'm guessing ref but I honestly can't tell.
I was also going to scan a page from Hampton's figure drawing book with a couple simple drawing exercises he does too, but I figure that'd be frowned upon. It involves more 3D, trying to describe form in space. So similar but different to your 2D ones. I gotta do more of each.
Really nice posts on this page. I like the way your forms are coming out on those figures, and the perspective piece looks great! The two ladies in your photoshop pieces look good as well. The fabric of their clothes comes across quite nicely. Keep it up!
I am seriously in love with your style. It's fluid, and you have a real grasp on it. Also fashion! 8D The backgrounds & characters are really great. ;w;
Also 5 stars because dang I am loving your sketchbook.
Thanks chevy28260 thanks
SweetRaspberryTea- I'm totally drinking raspberry tea right now - thanks for the stars
haven't drawn animals in a while - made a game of it, last letter in the word has to be the first in the next.
Hahah Thanks Rhubix for that nailed-on picture and for visiting. That's exactly how I feel sometimes about my drawing - terrified lol Your sketchbook had been a big help, it's motivating to see the kind of energy in this sketchbook. It just feels like a happy place and I love coming here!
The recent posts here are really cool, looks like you're trying some realistic paintings? They look awesome. I love that turtle.
Awesome stuff as always. Man I should really get back to doing some digital linework. Your digital lines are so accurate HOW?? O_O I want the Rhubix art pill for linedrawing. *starts to maniacly draw spirals on nearest piece of paper*
Your colors are still a bit stiff tough...but you're working on that so i'm sure it'll improve with time. A good exercise you can try for fun: Pick an old master painting. Do a b/w value study. After you're finished switch the source painting to grayscale and see what you have gotten right and what you have gotten wrong.
Anyways, always looking to see more from you.
A creative artist works on his next composition because he is not satisfied with his previous one. When he loses a critical attitude toward his own work, he ceases to be an artist. - Dmitri Shostakovich
