@kingkostas - Thanks so much for stopping by again!

@Pixie Trick - Holy crap, thank you sooooooooo much!! Those are awesome crits, and I really appreciate all the time you took to do the paintovers. Really good points about flow. I hadn't consciously thought about flow, though perhaps it subconsciously factored into my decision to work on the thumb I chose? Hehe. So I wonder if I should change the angle of the stairs so that they are angled to the left rather than the right... I'll have to play with that. Thanks again!!!

@cl0aked - Hey, thanks for stopping by! Yeah, I did the thumbnail in Painter. As for the still life, I think I mostly used Oils -> Smeary Round, with a few modifications.

Nice goldfish study! The scales' colors look very, very nice. I really liked that.

Ya the scales look great but the edges of the fish do not look right. I think light/shade variation along the contours in consideration of the lighting environment.

@ cl0aked @Flaskpost - Thanks!

@wilkerson - Yeah, you're right. I think I should have contoured some of the scale shapes to fit the form more, too. Thanks!

Worked a little more on this today. Redid the stairs and fixed the perspective with the help of Carl Dobsky's 1-point perspective download. Not quite sure about the placement of the fish - should I move it to the left a bit? Also, I had a suggestion to pull back the 'camera' a bit. What say you?

thats what we call an eyecandy?
Awesome.
Ok about the more left.
If you wanna add some more overlay effect and throw the fish a little more infront then do it.So much that it will simply overlap the outer ring of the circle. This will also connect the predictable motion with more rythm maybe.

In this piece i love the way you uproached the whole work.
You researched here and i simply love this
keep up the good work

You're very welcome. If it helps, I wouldn't bother spending time with paintovers if I didn't think the work you've already done didn't warrant it.

The fish study looks great! Nice and sparkly. Bg could use some colour variations.

A bit of a look and colour changes in the bg might be a thing to look at as well. If you check the edge of the shadow, you have that think orange stripe, but then there is a light shadow which darkens. It looks like this lighter area has a cooler feeling than the darker part. I'm not sure why... And I really do think the stair and wall stick wall could use some of the purple of the other shadows on it.

Also, if your fish is shiney (which it most definitely looks like) then the walls will be reflecting off of some of the scales (not very strongly but something to keep in mind - it happened in the ref copy you did above).

@kingkostas - Thanks for the suggestion!

@kittens - Hehe, thanks!

@Jesus Food - Thanks man.

@Pixie Trick - Aw, you make me blush. :B I bet you're right about the shadows being funnky. I wasn't using a reference or anything, so I need to go back and search for some examples of similar lighting. Good point about adding some purple to the stairs and wall, too. I ad been wondering if I should do that. Awesome suggestions as always, and thanks again!

CA was being weird last night when I tried to upload this, so here it is now. First drawing I've done just for fun in months. Jon Snow, from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. If you haven't read it, go read it NOW (and if you have, yes, I know Jon's eyes aren't red). :| I'm on my second read through the series, and enjoying it even more this time.

How come i haven't already commented on your recent posts!"!"!
And how come i am not already subscribed to your sketchbook?!?!
But you can bet that i visit you

Anyway.. xD i really like how you floating fish idea is coming along, but i personally think the other concept made it more visible that he was floating, and it gave a more of a 'set off in the wild wonder' feel

And i see you doing a goldfish study too!
That has some pretty amazing colours and interesting brush strokes.

Good luck onwards with your studies

Great stuff in here. I like the atmoshpere in the environment on page 9. I agree that to add depth you have to treat the different planes differently. Try using different brushes etc. The goldfish is lovely, especially the weird background and the surrealism surrounding the idea.

I'm looking forward to seeing that one finished.

Cheers

Hey guys, nothing to post today. My father in law has been in town, so I haven't had time for anything but commission work. I found out a few days ago that my grampa is dying, so I'm flying to NY State tomorrow morning to see him, and won't return until Saturday. I hope you all have a productive, art-filled week.

@kingkostas @Mischevioulittleelf - Thanks guys.

@Janos - Thanks for the suggestions.

@BlackDelphin - Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what you mean about the goldfish not floating anymore. Which image are you referring to?

I am sorry to hear about your grampa, and i hope you will have a good flight!
And i was referring to your second one, the one you chose to draw the details.

Take care, and come back with updates soon

I realy like the goldfish studies because of their colors.
Specialy in the last study it´s nice how the shadows fade into the
light shaded parts of the picture.

Wow, that still life blew my brain a bit, heh. Great job!

And I love those goldfish there, now I'm wondering why I've never thought about painting fish myself, they're beautiful...

Hope all goes well with your grampa though. *hugs*

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. I got back home a few days ago, and yesterday my boyfriend had to leave town to go to his grandmother's funeral. Then we found out our friend's father is dying. Strange how these things tend to happen in three's. Anyway, I'm starting to get back into the swing of things. Here's a commission, some airport sketches, and a 20 minute creature sketch inspired by greyhounds and barracudas.

And here's a portrait of our greyhound, Guy, who died last December. I'm working on it while Nick is away. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like you're off to a great start with Guy! His basic proportions appear to make sense, as do your roughed-out suggestions of how the fur patterns wrapped around him. Beyond that, it's hard to say how closely this already resembles him, specifically, but you would be the best judge of that anyhows.

I love how thin and drapey his tongue already seems.

What a beautiful animal.

@William Thanks. He really was a beauty, and one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known.

Here's another progress shot, and some photos of him that I'm using for reference. Oh, and the dandelions are there because he loved to eat them.

Hmmm... the dog's colouring looks a bit more red than what you've portrayed. The form is also getting a bit lost on his face. I think this would be a good candidate for a quick jump to greyscale.

It's great to see the still life! Very nice. You've been busy!

Hi there
I also noticed that the dogs is getting flatter and flatter. I love the fur but its more important to conves the 3 dimensions of the dog. I say try to add a new layer and reshape those planes. Than you can definitely work on the fur but not lose the 3 dimension. I also think that you are taking focus away form the dog with those flowers. I learned an important lesson yesterday in life studies class. In painting it is important to not treat different ares in the same way. You have to treat them differently, either the colour, the detail, the value and so on, to add interest, realism and most importantly your own interpretation of the person/thing/animal you are portraying.

I hope this helps a little.

Cheers

Hey, thanks you guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I just read your comments, and "finished" the painting a couple hours ago. I'm not sure if I will change anything, but I have definitely taken your comments to heart. Good advice.

Anyway, I'm having this printed on canvas and giving it to my boyfriend. We both miss Guy a lot.
