I'm the Professor and I've been looking for a mentor ever since I signed up to this site. My request for a mentor was pretty much swallowed whole every time I posted in the 'mentor sign-up' thread, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it's a whole forum section now. Here's hoping I can find someone to guide me artistically.
My three big weaknesses which I really need help with are backgrounds (I know that's very broad, but what can I say, I struggle with them), composition (I can put a picture together but it's always arranged very blandly), and colour theory - all I've been able to find on the subject is either painfully sterile or uselessly vague, and without it being in the context of a piece I'm working on this can be very frustrating.
Things like anatomy, texture, perspective, rendering and all the basic stuff I am competent with, though there is plenty of room for improvement. I mention it so you know I'm not an absolute beginner.
If you're wondering about the kinds of thing I like to draw (after all, you'll be critiquing it all), I have a fascination with creature design, so monsters, aliens, mutants, all those cool things, and I also have a penchant for robots and cyborgs. Occasionally I like to draw cute stuff as well (usually coinciding with my creature design).
If you want an idea of my current skill level, just check out my sketchbook. All the stuff there has been done in the past year, page two being stuff from the last few months. Anything I post in Critique Centre ends up in my sketchbook as well once I'm happy enough with it.
Ciao, I look forward to being taken under your wing.
