I like the topic as well. Absolutely looking forward to Hideyoshi's piece.

I may not be here around the end, and I doubt I'll get a final done in time. I will do it, but may not be able to put it up. But we'll see.

I personally think simple topics are much harder than you think. Because of simplicity, a lot of people suffer for "first impression" syndrome. I mean, who won't say that his/her first impression was a tall ice castle placed on high point with mountains in background? At such topics, the painting skill doesn't matter much, it's rather a idea that will "pop out" from rest similar work

Wow, im really glad that people are liking my topic, i was worried that it might be a bit cliché. Cant wait to see what Hideyoshi comes up with! Great to see work being produced for the topic already!

Hey guys, mine is a bit sketchy but I thought I'd post what I have to see if I can get any helpful incite on it.

Update: Tried to better the composition by making it a landscape. Still unsure about painting... I should probably take a step back.

JSpayde - me thinks there are compositional issues. Regard this with lotsa salt as I have very little clue as to what I'm doing.

WIP2

I'm having issues with the perspective of the river.

Tsujni - River perspective looks fine but I think it should be wider the closer it is. Compared to the size of the person, the width of that river makes it seem more like a stream they can cross in 6 or so steps. Choice of color looks great though compared to my bright blue.

I'm really hoping to finish this EOW. Sounds like a fun topic.
I thought of doing something like a toy castle in the snow. I need to change the mountains in the background to something that looks more like mountains and of course, fix all the perspective problems.

If you are really just 14 than this is a great start for you.
But you should understand that u have a long way to go in painting skills and this way is made of lots of single steps. U should not have fear for adding stuff like details and rendering and so on to your work, painting is like continuing revolution ( maybe for everybody ). every 'mistake' must be made to get rid of it.
Comes rest, comes rust, young padawan.
so draw on

JSpayde - Your right about the scale issue! Thanks. Try flipping your image horizontally to expose oddities in the composition.

Wip. I have absoloutely no idea about enviros, (well, that applies for most things ). It's going to be more contrasty, and castley eventually. I had the image of the cartoon grinch's mountain for this. Time for refs.

I see you have tryed flipping that... or looking at it in a mrror (in tha case of trad media. It has a compositional discomfort about it that migth be more analysable that way. the river in the distance is getting uplifted... but part of that is thepoint of view that you have chosen. the floating in midair that we so often choose for vast environments. where's the snow?

brewin --you have a reversale of atmosphereic perspective in your piece that is causing the castle to float and pop. you might want to relook at this while thinking about both atmopspheric effects on clarity and atmospheric effects on color and distance( atm your colour pallete remains the same no matter the distance, and due to the filtering effects of atmosphere that just isn't the case in the real world). then you might want to do a compositional analysis to see if you are using your focal points and frame divisions the best possible fashion...

Pixietrick the color, idea and compositon on this are fun i really like the gravity defiant quality of the top knot. it needs value contrast its very pastel and becasue of that is getting kind washed out. the wispy wintery clousd are just right. but you could use somethign to help give it a sense of scale.

Thanks, the river uplift has been annoying me! There was an issue of a "shape" moving across the foreground AND background that I just couldn't see until the drink blurred me sight. Which give me the idea to "copy merge" and "blur" my compositions to see any oddities. The snow is that white area opposite the castle cliff. The idea was to be in the shadow of the castle cliff.

Couldn't pass up the opportunity to sketch some castles for this topic Probably won't finish anything for this round though, since I'm away over Christmas. (but then again, I might do some more in my sketchbook or even finish one in pencil).

Just some sketches, nothing really original in here. Also lots of issues with perspective and composition but decided not to bother too much...

Hello people of CA.org, first post here so I thought it would be nice to do something for EOW.

Its going to be a ski resort buried (spelling?) under years of snow, with a castle that has been built on top of the mountain. Not really sure how to do the castle itself though.

Any criticism would be welcome.

I look forward to seeing a variety of ideas in this thread.

I use a few photo texture brushes, damn PS and its 2000^2 pixel brush limit!
However, I mostly use a square brush with heavy rotation! Looks like this
