Hi everyone, I need some help if anyone is able to offer some tips or suggestions on what to get my boyfriend, Jason...
We went to a show last week and he bought a sketch pamphlet. The artist started to draw a face with a mask. And Jason said he wished he could sketch like that. I regret now that I didn't ask to elaborate on what he wanted to sketch specifically, but I figured I could get a book on sketching in general? I went to Barnes & Noble and there are a ton of stuff to look through so I was wondering if there are any books you can recommend?
In the past he also mentioned he would love to learn how to work with colors and to actually work on how to show the spirit of a character.

It goes without saying that he'll only be as good as he is determined, there won't be a magic book or pencil that'll open his eyes all of a sudden.
The best inspiration I got was mostly free; things said by people on this site, or downloaded out-of-print books.
One of the few art books that actually helped me rather than give me vague advice was my anatomy book (atlas of anatomy for artists). If your boyfriend needs/wants some anatomical reference I'd suggest that.
So I decided on the Dynamic Figure Drawing book and Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. He already had the anatomy for artists book, otherwise he seems to like the ones I bought. I also told him about this site
Thanks again guys, you were a great help! Take care.
