ROUND #134 :: The Eclectic, Eccentric SingerDESCRIPTION
The Eclectic, Eccentric Singer
Inspiration: Tom Waits "Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards"
Description: A man or woman who has been around for a long time, their age disguised by wrinkles and scars that the times have written on their face. A person of faith, but not necessarily of a religion, just a power of greater than their own. No man tells them what to do with their life, they are guided by winds and season. A drifter by day and a power of soul by night. They travel from town to town, playing in low-lit bars, drinking to drown out a regretful past. They sleeps when they can, eats what people give them. Their clothes are dated to a time before modern day technology i.e. a tattered suit with old snakeskin boots.
Their only goal in their memorable life is to sing about their life story, full of tragedy and despair. They has a good heart but life and appearance shows different.
In short, a vagabond.

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.
BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Oregano and Daestwen (yay!) will make the selection.

This is kinda funny, I love Tom Waits, and made this quick colorsketch of him a couple of months ago. It will be hard to design a very different character with the same theme, seems like a tough challenge.
love the topic, im a bass player myself
check out and feel free to comment on my SB

I don't want to grow up
For those unfamiliar with him, he's kind of an acquired taste. Kind of like French Roast.
All the best,
'a real rocknrolla'
Well, here's a pose. I'm kind of attracted to the more Iggy Pop or Jim Morrison kind of character. Great topic!
UPDATE: Some base colour & details

YIIT - nice dude, loving the violin! Very ace.
Pixel tuner - looks cool but a bit aerosmith. nice work tho.
Nils Frykdahl from Faun Fables and Sleepytime Gorilla Muesum is deffinately an inspiration musically and within this brief cool as fuck 'out there' rocker.
Dont know who owns the copyrights to these images Ive googled.
Crazy goth guy with a statement.

Here is my Sketchbook. Please have a look if you have time. Thanks.
I'm running a blank pretty much. Quick idea sketch.
EDIT: trying to fix anatomical errors. This is a hard topic!

I wasn't too excited at first by the topic, but the more I thought about it the more ideas came. At any rate I thought the old cadaverous rocker like Keith Richards or Iggy Pop would be a fun place to start. So here are some exploratory sketches to get into the swing of things.
And getting a bit more into the direction of the brief...
I hope to do some colour tests on these a bit later today.

UCT: Well, Steven Tyler is pretty much a worn out guy so it fits the brief partially. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is an awesome band though. The bastard love child of Tom Waits, Meshuggah and Swans.
Felt like drawing something so I figured I'd go with the CHOW brief so I sketched this character based roughly on my brother.
I decided to go with an abstract look and make it look as if the music is radiating out of him and/or like he's in his own world when playing his music and just had fun with it and this is the result of that. It's probably a bit too abstract and I plan on refining it and make it clearer and more 'normal' sorta the direction his face is headed. Hopefully I'll have more time to work on it this week.
EDIT: If abstract-esque stuff isn't allowed in the CHOW poll that's cool, I'm just having fun with this and trying something different.

very cool topic.......i am still half-deaf because of a concert yesterday.......time to feed winamp with some g.g.allin mp3s for inspiration and get strated
Cool idea. Been stalking CHOW for several weeks now and finally have some time to participate.
Here's an idea I'm currently running with, not sure how much it fits the topic exactly (after looking at the ref pics posted). But from reading the brief images of old Western drifters and disillusioned holy men kept on coming to mind.
After Oregano's tip I exchanged his robes for a trenchcoat, scarf and gloves. I've also tweaked his boots.

I thought tyler had a comercial look that didnt really roll with the eclectic theme of the brief, but your guy looks rougher anyhows.
HLOYSHIT! this opens up for a Dekal MC!

A Tom Waits-inspired topic. How much better can it get?
My first post. Couldn't resist this week.
Constructive note I'd recommend for us all to ponder - a CHOW who "has been around for a long time, their age disguised by wrinkles and scars that the times have written on their face."
I'm trying my damnedest in WIPs not to skew this guy too young - I think the faces Aeronik did come the closest to that description so far...those pics that UCT posted might have the same "sound" or "soul" or "feeling" as Waits (though I have no idea, I listen to music ranging from opera to the 1930's), I think we have to keep the character description in mind...
Interesting, from what I'm interping from the piece Edriss posted - do we necessarily have to set this "present day" or even 20th/21st century? Can we go the whole "wandering Renaissance minstrel" route?
I looked at yours, now you look at mine...sketchbook here
"The doctor said I wouldn't have so many nosebleeds if I kept my finger outta there." - Ralph Wiggum
"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"Ordinary morality is only for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley
I noted that piece while I was at work today.
It needs to be contemporary. As is, Edriss, your piece is a bit off topic. Bring him forward and it will work, even with the cool ride.
All the best,

I feel like alot of you are missing the point here, just drawing what you would normally without taking the stylistic theme into proper consideration. This prompt made me think of the movie Gummo...
(Not the best examples, but i hope im conveying the message, compliments google image search)
at least concerning tone.
