Troll- Illusion Project - FINAL SHOTS

Hi There,

This is an sculpture made by myself, the master Alex Oliver and my friend Fernando Gomes.

We received the assignment of creating a character and modelling it in plastiline and ZBrush for animation. It was pretty nice working with the guys that taught me so much and still teach a lot of things.

The first step was creating the concept. We opted for a troll in a lord of the rings style, but with some of our own style too. So Alex did the drawing and we started constructing the structure for the plastiline.

I made the base with an welded aluminium tube of 3/8 with epox in the joints to keep it firm, then we added polystyrene and

polyurethane to fill the structure and covered it with plastiline. After that, we made the drawings of the muscles and defined the volumes.

I'm sorry I didn't post the pics of the structure. We had some problems with the camera and lost the first photos.

I took over the texturing part. I confess I even thought about kicking the sculpture´s head, because I couldn´t stare at so many little

lines.

In the picture, you have myself and Fernando. Alex is shy, but I'll post one of his pictures soon.

Now, Alex montruous ability has modeled the piece that is going to be animated in ZBrush. What to say about that?

Look and Slobber

Well, for now that is it, the fainal images will be psoted soon.

Hey mate, that is one gorgeous sculpt, the concept, the anatomy and just generally everything is perfect. I can't see one fault. The face is definately my favourite, he really has so much character. I can even imagine him trying to talk and smile. Looks like someone stole his rock collection or something from looking at the last picture there. Wow. Well done! Can't wait to see more from you.

Best wishes!

Looks great.

Big, thick, powerful anatomy with a great stance. Love the fact that he's armed with a heavy duty club (a club is a must for any troll to be taken seriously)

I also like the look to the face, which is somewhat like the Star Wars Rancor, but a bit more human.

Nice design and great sculpting. I really love this kind of subject matter. Nice work.

Love the sculpt. I actually think the anatomy, texture, gesture, volume/shapes are better captured in the sculpt.

Incredible work!! I love this troll, he is brutal, the details of the skin are impressive, the skulls are a very good idea for characterization of the criature, in general it's wonderful! The 3D work I like it so much, I saw several 3D works but after view this I think that I will begin to work with z-brush

We're seeing lots of trolls and dragons around here. Even though this has some clear influences, the face really does set it apart. This looks like the sort of dim-witted, heavy-handed beastie that would grind bones and snatch travelers off of bridges and - nothing against P. Jackson and the WETA krewe - I quite prefer your vision to the one shown in the film. I always felt it was just a bit underdeveloped in the face.

The execution here is just tight. Great use of detailing and texturing. I'll have to scratch any trolls of the production list for a few months. This nailed it for the rest of the year for me.
