Eow 96 Winner's choice:The Mauryan Dynasty 321-185 b.c
The winner of the Potempkin Villages round was Dark_Eyes,was asked to choose a topic for this round, this is what he or she chose... Go for it
The Mauryan Dynasty 321-185 b.c.: Alexander the Great marched with his army into the Indus Valley in 327b.c. and despite great resistance from the hill tribes, he reduced most of their fortresses and defeated King Poros, as well as other local rulers, with 2000 war elephants.
This is an ancient indian civilization so think along those lines for reference... showing the elephant battle would be cool, but not necessary. The main focus should be on the look and feel of ancient indian culture (mainly temples because they have survived) This is a great opportunity to research a rare culture and push your limits so NO COMPLAINING! Have FUN ok?

I was waiting for a good topic to sink my teeth into.
quite honstly I know zip about ancient indian culture, and that isn't even all that ancient. india is a big place, what part?
jungle? dry hills? the indus valley is rather long I believe how far did alexander get. guess Im gonna have to do some research too
woot, hope to find some time, this sounds like fun. But then again, don't they all?
And the answer to that question is yes, by the way.
Yeah, I'm a little confused by this too. Having done a little research, Alexander seemed to have died before the Mauryan Dynasty began. Is this just a question of artistic licence? Do we have to include the Macedonian armies?
So...I have this picture in my head but I need to know before following through, can we bring this ancient scene into a more styilized and fantastic world like, say, 300 was done?
It seems like the mention of Alexander has thrown people off. Honestly it seemed strange to me too first off, focusing on a Macedonian king in an Indian empire topic. If the topic is Mauryan, focus on that. Include Alexander if he's relevant (it's a stretch though... Alexander - 356 to 323 BC, Mauryan - 320-ish to 185 BC).
Battle elephants are cool though... whoever's using 'em...
New World Creation: Designers Wanted – Environment of the Week
Hey guys, some clarification... Disregard the last image of the sun temple if you want, that was a mispost on my part, however, a lot of these temples as they remain today have been modified throughout the centuries by other cultures, and are a mixture of other styles (buddhist stupas, hindu temples ect...) so i guess we don't have to stick to EXACTLY this time period. I really thought that showing this battle would be cool, but I guess it isn't necessary, focus on portraying an ancient indian civilization, the macedonian stuff would just be icing on the cake. As far as the issue of Alexander the great, I've read several accounts of this battle occurring in 327 bc, so maybe i'm wrong, but we'll just proceed as if... There are some good references for mauryan art and architecture on wikipedia, so try to stick to it if you can, but remember we are creating a concept here, so you can take some liberties... Solid?... Have fun!!! here are some more images from that time period.
MY DAILY SKETCHES
If you can read this, I gave you 5 stars
yay elephants! personally im looking for a vitality, and life in a culture I don't know much about. i mean we have an era and a region an deven a pretty concrete time.
(I mean what's 200 years between friends)
i always am amazed when folks can fire up their imaginations to make an historical place , alive and real.
this is just me talking
it has nothing to do with judging or what goes to poll BTW
My rough WIP so far. I kind of new to doing environments so any crits will be welcome.
I'm in again. I was thinking about sitting out this round, but oct 6th I can make. Nice topic.
gmblfdz: Hey man I am no pro at enviros haha but learning more everyday. My thoughs when making a enviro image are thinking about for-ground,mid-ground and background elements. Make sure you define these areas and situate them in space by adding atmosphere to push elements far away into the distance. Also the closer to the eye things are the greater their contrast. Also think about linear perspective (one point/ 2 point etc).
Then there is composition which is quite difficult and has no strict rules but try to understand how the eye will travel around the image and where is its focal point. And how interesting is this path the eye takes? Also composition refers to the large shapes your image is made up of. Are these shapes interesting and do they work well together? Then one more thing the dark/light areas of the image they need to balance out. Breif but some important stuff to think about
You can find more about this in that loomis book Andrew Loomis - Creative.Illustration.pdf. Good luck!
Found this, cool looking wall, I might have a try at a similar type of thing.
I didnt participate last week cause mmmm my sci fi art is still not on par with everyone else . But for this week, I think I'll give it a shot! Cool topic
I really wanny try this one, but I am terribly busy at the moment.
Need to see...
Hey guys, this sounds like a really interesting topic!.
I would have posted this earlier but i have crappy internet at home but heres what i've done so far, just ned to keep working on it
From:http://www.livius.org/man-md/mauryas/mauryas.htmlIn the last weeks of 327 BCE, the Macedonian king Alexander the Great invaded the valley of the river Kabul, and in the next months, he conquered Taxila, defeated the Indian king Porus at the river Hydaspes, and reached the eastern border of the Punjab. He wanted to continue to the kingdom of Magadha in the Lower Ganges valley, but his soldiers refused to go any further, and Alexander was forced to go south. Many Indians now resisted the invaders. By the end of 325, the Macedonian king had left the area of what is now Karachi, and his admiral Nearchus was forced out of Patala.
Alexander's conquests had been spectacular, but he had not conquered India. On the contrary. Not even the Punjab and the Indus valley were safe possessions of his kingdom. Before Alexander had died in 323, he had redeployed nearly all his troops west of the Indus. For the first time, he had lost part of his empire. On the other hand, his invasion changed the course of Indian history. In Taxila, a young man named Chandragupta Maurya had seen the Macedonian army, and -believing that anything a European could do an Indian could do better- decided to train an army on a similar footing. In 321, he seized the throne of Magadha. The Mauryan empire was born.
Interesting topic. I might just go through pictures I have from when I lived in India, and try to find some reference photos.
WIP. Different composition.
