Jacks 2d + 3d Scribblings!

I've had a shared sketchbook on here for a couple of years now, but I really wanna start exercising my autistic muscles now.

I'm pretty rusty at drawing and the likes, and I know I have way too many bad habits to name, so don't be afraid to just lay in to my work and tell me what's wrong with it. I'll love you for it

Hey Jacky! Good to see you around here after meeting you on GA! You have some nice paintings. I liked especially the zumbi guy with a head on his hand. Hope to see this topic alway updated! Cheers!

Carlos: Thanks buddy, much appreciated
thespianmonsalvo: Thanks, will do
Envisor: Cheers man, the top one is rendered in Maya, and the goblin type fella, is a screengrab straight out of Zbrush.

here's a couple of studies, and a character I'm currently working on in Zbrush

This stuff is great! Just out of curiosity, did you get into animation from an artistic direction or a computer based direction initially? You have great ability in both areas.

Royzy: Thanks Royzy, I guess I got into animation through the artistic route, but I did quite enjoy maths at school yeah I know... So anyway 3d animation seemed like a good outlet for my art and maths. I see that you're gonna be doing digital animation soon, good luck with that man, I'm just starting my final year of the bournemouth 3d animation course.
kingkostas + ZweiDee: Cheers guys, here's some more of the fruits, from my foray into pixelart.
Newton Br: Thanks, I'll try.
thesadpencil: Sure thing, I really need to get stuck into some colour work soonish.

A couple of studies done today, from photo ref.

Very good sb! Your style is very personal and already developed....dark and a bit messy, but coherent. You understand the lightning quite well, I guess because you know as well about modelling. My only crit is....keep practicing, dont stop, and work as much as possible everyday! hopefully we all see how you improve.

Carlos + yongs: Cheers guys, pixel stuff is good fun, but it takes a loooong time. I'm gonna give it a break for a while now I think and get back into painting.
Nopig: Thanks, he was supposed to be a Russian astronaut who had got lost in space for decades and gone a bit mad. We did a group animation about him last year.
QETALIVAN: Thanks, I really wanna keep this going
kingkostas: hell yeah! it's amazing what the pixel community are churning out at the moment, check out www.wayofthepixel.net if you ever fancy seeing some real pixelart.

the last image is an idea for my next animation project I'm planning out at the mo.

Funny- your sketchier "scribblings" show a great deal of form and stylistic charm. Getting it right the first time is one of those things that is just so hard to do. Your values studies work out well, too. Good job man. Get some more color in there, maybe?

But yeah. Good job. Post!

Quigleyer: Thanks, I've always prefered more expressionistic stuff, plus it's a good way to hide bad anatomy

Ok I really need to start forcing myself out of my bad habits now, so for starters I need to:
*Use Colour
*Draw creatures, i.e less human-like anatomy
*Pay more attention to clothing and objects
*Dynamic poses

and eventually I guess I really need to bite the bullet and start doing full enviros

But for now colour alone seems like a pretty big beast to tackle

Hey man. The colored one is nice. Good choice of hues. I would suggest you the same things people have been sugestin´ me. Try to use bigger brushstrokes.

Cheers!

You have the list now start doing it mate. Makes goals and accomplish them as you will. Improvements will be unavoidable if you're setting goals like that.

Why the midget in #6 don't have a penis ? although your 3d looks good , keep up the good work. Oh and focus on one thing til you nail it and then move to lets say drawing or painting. See ya

Carlos: Cheers buddy, colours definetly aint one of my strong points, but I'm starting to see improvement. I see what you mean about the little brush, it kinda makes my colour piece look sketchy, as opposed to a full on painting.
seth1: Thanks man, really appreciate it
flamable: Cheers, the midget has a suitable groin lump now.
kingkostas: Thanks, I'm a big fan of impressionistic stuff.

Flamable bought up an interesting point, would I be better off concentrating on say sculpting, and then moving onto something else like drawing?
I find by jumping about in different mediums I keep it interesting for myself. What do you guys tend to do?

Here's a few of my sketches lumped together, and some painting in zbrush

Nice texture on the dwarf guy and i like your paintings! especially the colored one.

I'm not sure about focussing on 1 or not, but maybe the progress would be indeed faster if you are focusing on a single skill. But if you love both, why not do it together

and my teacher always says that sculpting helps in drawing so maybe it aint a bad choice to practice them together afterall.

yongs: Thanks, I think I'm gonna carry on doing a bit of everything, it's wicked fun.

I've just started up lifedrawing classes again, so hopefully this'll be a weekly thing. These are all pretty quick poses, the thumbnails were 15-30 secs and the others were a couple of minutes I think. Not great, but I'm gonna need a few weeks to warm up.

Also a quick Frazetta study, and a relief sculpture. The sculpture was done in Kings Cross station, with Paul Day teaching about 15 of us, it was a wicked experience, and Paul's a really cool guy. His stuff has some crazy perspective and amazing detail, it's well worth checking out.
