Monday monday monday. Alright, last week was deceptively challenging, so this week will definitely be a relaxing and easy theme. I'll probably do something based squarely on animation and effects every once in awhile.
Week 4 - Dust Off
The challenge this week is going to focus on animating. It's the first special effects challenge, and the theme for this one is dust/dirt. Create sprites of dust and dirt being blown around, kicked up, whatever. You can be as creative as you want with what is going on, as long as it fits the theme of dust/dirt effects. Just remember, you're only making a sprite of dust itself, NOT a character kicking up dirt. The only thing in the sprite should be the dirt. Be it as complicated or easy as you want, this is one that can be finished in a few minutes.
Sure I'll bite. Is there any online references we could take a look at?
I couldn't find any ripped sprites involving just effects... but everything from street fighter to metal slug to sonic the hedgehog has interesting examples of dust spurts and clouds and things.
I'm going to try and do at least 1 each day, with a different use of dust each time.
Here's the first, only took 10 minutes or so.
nice activities, I'm lurking in these topics and maybe one day I make an entry too. I have no experiences, so I was waiting for an easy and motivating round
I have not much time this week, but we'll see
a few minutes definitely won't be enough for me.
Sinix, your dust is wonderful as your other anims in these topics
hrm - sinix, the reason it doesn't look like it's sliding is because it doesn't look like it's friction - no dust in the front. If there's resistance there'll be dust kicked up in the front as well.
attached below, my first try. I'll probably do another as well. I also vote that this become a weekly... totally.
Whew, great sprite guys! Must say I was eyeing both of your sprites when I was doing this, trying to pick up a thing or two. I couldn't match the speed in any of yours; mine's kinda more of a dust cloud lol. Fun stuff though, gonna have to do another!
edit: looking at them on the same page now I can reaaally see a difference lol; gotta work on getting more of a three dimensional look to my sprites.
Onir - I think the reason it looks flat to you is that you've got a black outline around it. You can have it look nice and cartoony but not flat by simply using the shadow color as your outline. I took the liberty of doing a quick fix to yours, posted below (took less than 5 min to change the colors)
In terms of speed, it's all a matter of using less frames. In the second one here, I removed every other frame in your ani.

Ooo, thanks Lake! Wouldn't have thought that the outline could have that much of an effect on the look, really good to know. Frame number has always been an area I need to experiment more with as well, just don't know how little frames I can use at times haha.
Yea, I'm gonna take another stab at this one; it's fun and it's good practice Sinix I like the recent one, has a nice path that I would expect. Must say it's nice scrolling through here and seeing the variety of types... yea though I'll be back with another!
these not definite forms and moves were always difficult for me (a human easier as a mountain for me, for example) though I liked them...
the shadows are rushed and the shapes aren't elegant, but I spent too much time for experiments and I got really tired and confused. I created it in flash, then converted to animgif. sorry
Great job shiNiN! Really nice motion, love the colors too. Crazy that you did that in flash as well lol.
Another great one Lake, you're really getting a strong handle on this. Thanks for the link too! Been meaning to look at actual dust clouds and such.
Here's my most recent attempt; went without an outline this time, has a bit more of a full look to it. I do kinda like the cartoony look in the other one so I might do another like that (and like this) for some more practice hehe.
More of an air bubble effect I think?
cute new ones and I was worried that my dust was at some point not very dustlike...
Lake: thanks for the link... I searched youtube with the wrong keywords, it seems...
Discovered these few threads, inspired me to try animating, all in the course of a day!
Here is my first attempt, gonna go larger/moreframes/referenced on the next ones.
Great job goes out to everyone thats posted thus far!
(less of a dust cloud, more of a dirt clod )

Ooo... nice stuff. Looks like I missed a fun one.
-My work can be found at my local directory thread.
A'ight, I belted out a couple quick ones just for the heck of it yesterday. A little late but hey, it was still fun.
Honestly I thought this'd be harder, but it wasn't so bad. Might become a little "inbetween" activity for me... you know when you want to create some art but don't really have much in the way of ideas?
Not totally satisfied with my second cloud. I think it would've worked better if I had that second puff grow out of the first or something. Ah well.

It could be great if some of you made a step by step!!!I want to try,but don´t know how!!!
Here is my first ever sprite attempt. Admittedly, I did it rather rushed, using just circles. Ideally it should probably be a little more detailed shape wise. Even so, CC is very welcome. I feel like maybe a few more frames in the beginning would help, and maybe it's too bulbous around four frames in. This is a fun process. I intend to play catch up with all the SAWs. This one seemed like a good simple one to start with.
