Not posted here before and thought that I should. Iv been a lurker for a long while and seen some amazing stuff and thought I should share some of mine for once. Have a butchers. comment all you want...
The work that im posting is my degree work from last year which a friend of mine had finally got me to post. The samurai is base on the 6th samurai from Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. The sculpt is about the 'spirit of bushi' and the speed and craft of japanese sword play. The motion is that he is just about to flick his sword out and slay his opponent in a matter of seconds with one swift movement and the blade back in its sheath with a second.
‘He is a complete professional; we know this because we have seen him fight. He says very little, is closed, and—like his sword itself—only uses himself when he needs to. We know that he is lethal, though peaceful. He incorporates the true spirit of bushi.’

The lighting was a bit poor in the show, and I hope peolpe can see the images clearly.
To accompany the samurai I made a replica sword.
Here I have created a fully functional model of a samurai sword. All the parts have been hand crafted keeping to the traditional methods of making though using alternate materials. The blade has been carved out of beach wood, and the scabbard is formed from layered MDF that was then sealed with liquid plastic. The sword guard (tsuba), pommels (fuchi and kashira) , and palm ornaments (menuki) have been sculpted, cast in plastic and then painted to the desired effect. The collar (habaki), and metal spacers (seppa) were formed from 6mm sheet plastic.
The design for the sword guard is based on an old tsuba made some time in the Muromachi period (1338 – 1573) with the design of a monkey reaching for the moons reflection. It is an interpretation of man going about the wrong way to be enlightened, as the allegory of the monkey stretching as far as he can to grab the reflection of the moon in water. He cannot understand that he is looking in the wrong place. I have then continued this story in the rest of the parts.
Under the binding on the handle, textured latex is used to mimic ray skin. This is used as extra grip in the handle when fighting in the rain or if blood got on to the handle.
Thank you for viewing. I hope you like.
