IDW - DEEP: Undersea Utopia

Topic: Deep Sea Technology

For this grand joined activities challenge you are asked to explore the imaginary world of the deep seas. The topic is specifically designed to keep the results as broad as possibly, as the focus of this challenge is for you to come up with a wide variety of ideas and concepts.

In this special round of IDW it is your task to fill out the world of the Undersea Utopia with all kinds of things that relate to Industrial Design. This may be technology like transport for the inhabitants, but also sunken ships or exploration vehicles from the surface or props like sunken containers on the bottom of the ocean…basically, anything that can be called technology, props, or items, in one form or another.

Instead of the normal one entry per person, this time we want to see a variety of work. In the end, you will be judged on the body of work and not just on how well the final rendering of your design looks. Ideas and concepts are what this round is about. The amount of work invested in each idea or concept is up to you; 5 developed concepts with sketches to back them up, 100 thumbnails categorized on different subjects, go wild. In the end, bundle it into one image/submission and post it in the Final Burning Thread that will be put up a little later (yes, a first for IDW). Craftsmanship and presentation are important. Even though you will be judged on the ideas, you should still do a great job!

The results will be judged by both a public poll and a judging panel, as there are going to be awesome prizes for the winners!

Brief:
1. Sketch, draw, design and doodle anything that comes to mind for the topic DEEP: Undersea Utopia in terms of stuff; Vehicles, breathing gear, submarines, sunken containers etc.
2. This time, focus on generating and presenting your ideas. While one sketch can sometimes be a hit, usually you'll need to work initial ideas out a bit further to come to more finalised concept. For this challenge, both are fine. You will be judged on the whole body of work, not the final render of a concept alone.
3. Go wild...

Deadline: June 30 - 11:59pm

Update 06/05/08

Sounds like a great idea to all the activities going at something together. Hope I can produce something to do it justice.

eStudios - work in progess shots should likely go in this thread and then there'll be a 'Final Burning' thread (not in existance yet) for then finished pieces. Doesn't normally happen like that for IDW but if you look at the other activities they work that way. It's usually best if you keep a single main post to post all your progress works into so everything stays ordered.

PS - and welcome onboard...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic idea sketches - thinking about settings and themes...

(i) big sub and undersea installations (maybe a bit towards EOW)
(ii) manganese nodule harvester & hot vent facility...

Update 06/05/08 - new sketches
(iii) Black-smoker extraction mining rigs sketches
(iv) Black-smoker extraction rigs detail

eStudios: D-Holme is right: post any work in progress shot/images in this thread so people can react or comment on it. The final submission (all images you want to put in there gathered into on image and one post) can be put into the Final Burning thread which will be posted later on. Have fun

Cool , deep sea tech :-D

a simple graphic or logo, like those military arrow ranks
that we can include on the designs, can help a little
to bring it all together as a whole undersea society, or military,
you know the rebels , the empire . . . etc etc
even if we all make different stuff.

>>>

May 16

May 19

A.I. Mecha design for DEEP

Sub MODE designed for exploration on deepsea,
Mecha MODE used for construction inside
Utopia undersea city, this Mecha type
can be modded into a military weapon (wave Camo Paint)
attaching weapons to the side panels

May 20

One man sub suits
both have 2 arms, but removed
one to show the design of the main body

June 1

June 2

June 3

Basically these capsules are floating
outside the undersea city, if somebody
runs out of oxygen they swim and enter underneath
and works like a little cave with a long supply of air

The shark shape kite thingy is to keep other fishes from getting near.

June 4

DEEP Undersea Mecha, the back fin attachment
is used for more storage and be able to travel
outside the city from district to district,
this model is used for maintenance, like the
other ones can be upgraded using a different back fin
with more arms instead of storage space

Also an A.I. specimen can perform most task by itself
but can be remotely controlled for special
repairs that require human judgement

June 10

A.I. Mecha , design for patrol around
the utopia deepsea city, end of fins
can be used to attach upgrades,
like ammo, weapons, armour, or fuel.

June 11

So this guy, incapacitates the undersea Mechs
basically he/she goes and stabs the machines
giving them an electroshock, disabling them,
i dont think they will be trashed or explode . ..
anyway
He has batteries in her/his waist, each one
in a different voltage or frequency, so she/him
can switch depending on the type and size of the mech target
. . . . any questions regarding electricity and water ?
. . those are . . magical electric powers :-P

June 12

June 16

deep sea exploration suit
back hunch serves as air supply
and propulsion, softer material than
metal full of nerve wires that permit
a more organic movement to legs and arms
even at heavy pressure depths

June 17

This suit is used by pilots,
it has a limited protection for high pressure
but enough to survive,
helmet is full of displays and sonar,
most of navigation tools
would always be on the pilots gear
instead of the transportation vehicles

June 18

another exploring / cannon sub for Deep
this time added a tentacle arm
not a precision tool,
but brings a more versatile and strong way to do some tasks.
small arms can extend and manage tiny and delicate samples

June 19

June 20
So what if you are running out of oxygen
and are far from a safe capsule or the undersea city
well you call this rescue fishes,
using a sound distress signal

a group of fishes will come carrying
a shell full of air with a straw, pull the tube
to break the seal and release the air
just be sure to give them a treat after they save your life :-)
and take the harness off the fish too.

June 21

This guys are part of the maintenance fleet
(shown here without their helmets)
for underwater city, they would get hooked
by one line that carries electricity and oxygen

then connect the tools to their body armour
and start working, welding and sealing leaks of air

June 22

June 23

June 24

June 25

June 26

June 27

The pilot is attached to the mecha
by magnetic shoes to the top platform.
This Mecha is used for exploration and construction.
the spheres go inside of rock cracks and
then expand and open a path.
also used to move big objects or salvage materials/ lost ships.

Most energy is steam based, absorbing water and boiling
it in it's engines to generate pressure and movement

Robogabo: I misunderstood that the first time I read it, but the idea behind this collaboration of weekly activities is that people create their own world by doing multiple or all activities. Doing one is fine too. What we don't want is to force people into a setting where they have to work with two factions evil and good or anything. That is totally up to the individual to fill his/her world with. If there is people wanting to use ideas off of others, I guess its fine as long as the other agrees. However, keep in mind that the final entries will be judged on originality as well. Good to see you in here though

May 16th - Looking forward to this... images to follow : D

May 26th - Heres my first crack.. I dont really have the time to do heaps of thumbnails... however I am working at getting a style guide happening so all my designs flow across the forums.

The idea behind these ships is that they are designed based on exsiting sea creatures. This way they blend into their suroundings.

More to follow! ... hopefully : D

eStudios: Please keep all updates in one single post in this thtread. I expect the activities forums will be soon flooded with entries, if everyone used up ten posts to show every minor update this thing is going to blow up in our faces You can edit your first post by clicking the 'edit' button on the bottom right of the post (next to the 'quote' and 'thanks' buttons). Also, keep in mind that this contest is not about creating one single completely rendered artwork but more about the idea generation, your thoughts on your designs, variations and solutions you find to certain problems that you expect will occur in the Deep sea.

I should have something to post in here soon, yoi...

I'm just being a slacker.

I have a question, though. I'm designing a deep-sea suit, so... if I pull it into pieces to show how it works, that goes here, right? And if there's a human in it, it goes into CHOW?

Deastwen: Yep, if you want to explain the workings of the suit and all IDW is the place to be. That said, there's nothing against posting the human + suit in here as well, only I think it's better to keep that in CHOW.
