www.transientman.com 10/17/09 oh god its 95 pages now!!! also 2 new illos bottom pg 1

PLEASE CHECK OUT WWW.TRANSIENTMAN.COM!!!

featuring more concept art and other things.

thanks for looking!

hello CA!! i hope you are all doing well. i figured i should take the opportunity to post something in here since its been like a year or something since i last had anything to show.. work is a wake to sleep endeavor these days, so i have little time to do much outside my concept arting and studio management reponsibilities at MB. but you bet your ass every chance i get, i'm at the drawing board trying to squeeze some personal stuff out

so, this is kind of an on going thing that i have been doing off and on for the past few years. i was never really an avid comic book guy, so there's been a hell of a learning curve here, plus, i just kind of charged in and started working with very little planning like a moron . but its been a great experience, and i feel like its allowed me to not only "trial by fire" start wrapping my head around this comicing stuff, but it's also allowed me to concentrate on getting the story elements and pacing better figured out, which i guess would be important, since its a storytelling medium

this all came out of an idea i had a long time ago, about how when you see homeless people who are talking to themselves, that maybe they were actually talking to crazy monsters or some shit and blah blah blah....so i was talking to Wes about it, and he came up with the awesome idea that maybe there was like a war for humanity going on, and that the bums were the only real line of defense, and in one crazy conversation we had brainstormed out a bunch of really cool ideas to stew on. this has tenatively been one of the IP's in develoment here at MB over the past few years. to date, i have personally done a shit load of work feeding into this idea, from little pencil sketches to large oil paintings. these pages are basically the intro and backstory idea.

so having said all that, here they are, and i will continue to update as more work is done for this psychedelic bum/monster battle universe. hope you like!-c36

oh- id also really like to thank igor BLACK FROG for your critiques. you are a gentleman and a scholar!

EDIT 06 12 08

hey guys!

Thanks again for all your comments, and in general the love you have shown me on this... i can't tell you all how much it means to me that you have taken the time to read it, let alone taken the time to reply.

I have been hard at work the past couple months on more of this stuff, and i think its finally time to offer up the next little installment.

So what ive basically done here, is produced the next few pages of the story as a cinematic storyboard sequence. i felt this intro scene was something that lent itself very well to this kind of treatment, plus it aligned perfectly with the goal of making a storyboarding tutorial to help support this site. Lastly though, I think it helps to make the case that this would make an awesome movie

The funny thing is, I had this whole sequence drawn out in comic book format, but when the time came to do a storyboarding demo, I said ,fuck it, I'll redo it how I would want to see it in film format. Of course the shots are subjective (I'm my own director too ), and because there are more of them, I focused less on perfect rendering, and aimed more for feel, mood, action, and most importantly clear communication of the scene.

So here they are, I hope you like them. OH and if you want to see how these were made, with step by step commentary about their creation, as well as straight talk on the why's and the how's of the art gauntlet run that is storyboarding, please check it out. help us to support our little microcosm that is CA.org, and maybe pick up a cool new trick or two

thanks!
-c36

EDIT 08 22 08

Heya guys!

so...i broke my own rule, and i went back and and reworked some pages, not only in the effort to further separate "reality" from the flashback sequence,
but also to bring some of these earlier pages more in line with how i have been approaching some of the more recent pages i have been working on. i gotta say,it was quite satisfying to go back and
fix old drawing problems and other issues that had been nothering me

i think i have finally found the approach and working methods that im happy with, where i can work fairly quickly and still get visually what im after....well most of the time anyway.
im excited nevertheless, since i think i have finally found a stylistic roadmap that i can live with, which i can now follow for the rest of the book.

so for this next installment, i've continued the linear progression of the story, but for this act, gameplay elements and mechanics have been overlaid, in an attempt to
simulate it in a way a player might encounter when playing TRANSIENT- the video game.

thanks again for all the kind comments and encouragement you have given me on this project. know it means the world to me, seriously. and stay tunes, i have a bunch more stuff
brewing on this....

thanks again for looking!!

EDIT 09-03-08

so here are two more pages i have been working on. been making good progress and will try to update this thread more regularly. still a loooong way to go. wish me luck. back to work

thanks again for lookin

EDIT 09 09 08

here are pages 22 and 23. just a couple more pages to go, and the first "chapter" will be wrapped. hope you like... stay tuned

EDIT 09 19 08

whew, here are pages 24 and 25, which completes the first "issue" i guess you could call it. wow these things are a lot of work i have been plugging away and i think its moving in a good direction. or at leawst i hope it is. anyhoo, hope you like, and ill be updateing again as soon as i can.

thanks for looking!-c36

EDIT 09 25 08

here are 3 more pages. hope you like...back to work. thanks for looking.

c36

EDIT 10 02 08

updated with a couple more pages. ive been waiting to do page 30 for some time, just because the idea was kind of grossly funny to me. its the little victories at this point that keep me going sometimes. these dialog heavy pages with 4 characters interacting in multiple frames can sure end up being a lot of work ...but oh well, what are you gonna do right?

anyway, hope you guys like, and please let me know what you think.
EDIT 11-24

updated with 5 more pages. i feel like im finally making progress here and will have much more to show shortly. yay!

thanks again for looking!

EDIT 12 28

updated with a few more pages. more to come!

EDIT 12 30

two more pages of madness....thanks for lookin!

the transient "i broke the post limit, can i get an admin's help please? update

10-13-09 update

added a couple of images at the bottom of this post. i made these earlier this year. the first one features a homelss gentleman handing amonster his favorite beverage, and the second one is about a man and a monster who have been chained together. the chain isnt real, its a hallucination they both see and experience, brought on by a hex that was placed on the man by a street shaman. the old man is a recluse, who only wants to be left alone, while the monster only wants to drink, smoke, and talk incessantly.

these were both started on papaer and painted in photoshop. i had a lot of fun on these. i hope you like em.

Wow this is already looking fucking awesome. Can't wait to see where this goes. Are you going to refine these panels any more or is this the amount of finish you're going to for?

Wow. These are crazy and very trippy. I love the change in styles with mood and such. It really brings a new level to the story telling.

this is it haha. i figure i dont want to paint myself into the corner of doing super rendered stuff, since i will never be able to finish it, plus, this is supposed to be kind of fun ..but for future pages, im hoping to incorporate a bit more of a painted style, similar to how i have been doing my storyboards lately. i can fly on it much faster this way. also, i think its actually better looking and says more with less...

edit--thanks for your responses guys! i appreciate it alot -c36

oh that is really nice.... realllllllllllly niiiiiiicccce

storytelling is pretty good for someone who hasnt really worked on comic storytelling before. sometimes ur a little too interested in all the lil graphic stuff you throw in. its only distracting. the meat of the story is boss though

Wow! The art caught me 'tis sure but the references to planes of existence...
Maybe you have a similar DnD background and relate to it that way but in the course of everyday life and pondering philosophy and the unknown...I always refer to other possible spheres of reality as planes of existence but I never hear other refer to it that way.
Usually, one hears the word "dimensions" but DnD folk can relate to the concept of alternate planes; ethereal, astral, etc.
Do you have a DnD background?

Holy shit. I love it when someone pushes what a Comic Book should read and look like.

Beautiful artwork, so atmospheric and realistic enough to create a really convincing 'world'.

Again.... Damn!

Holy fucking shit, this is awesome.. I second the coolness of the text. It's interesting how the main character has his own type, seperated from the other characters. Can't wait to see the rest of the story unfold

Fucking amazing coro, The pictures illustrate the whole story but its So great to be able to read along with the text as well. Your an inspiration to everyone and the ultimate Crusher. Ever since seeing your drawings and hearing this story i have never been able to see homeless people the same way.
