I spent a few hours on this one. Just a house from an image I picked up off the internet. My real objective on this one was to accurately paint the lighting conditions. I neglected to try and add the reflections, (I have no idea how to), and my trees could probably use some work.
Overall, I'm happy with the final result. I enjoyed working with the very warm dynamic lighting, and the very cool surrounding environment.
Putting it together was easy enough. I dropped some guiding lines over the original image to get my perspective, and then dragged those lines onto my canvas where I simply resized them. After that, it was a simple issue of blocking out my dominant colors, and focusing on painting very loosely and simply, paying very close attention to to how the light was affecting the composition. It was a great image for working on my color theory too!
Crits are definitely appreciated and encouraged.
If necessary, I'll upload my ref as well.
Sorry that its tagged, but the attachments aren't showing the image directly for some reason.
Great stuff...Looks like you're one of the impatient ones that likes to put in detail before they fill in all the color first. Still looks great. I look forward to more!

Another quick speed paint. Attempting to let my values define my shapes rather than lines (in some places, anyway).
Nice work, it all has a very nice feeling to it. Why don't you take one of these pieces and try to finish it, push it as far as you can, you might end up discovering you've got much more than you are showing right no, and might help others to give a more helpful feedback. keep it up, please keep posting!

The soldier and the enviro sketch are definitely the best ones.
I guess that the lack of contour lines makes them look much better than the others. The first three images - and the last one - are rather flat (except from the alien robot wich looks cool). I think that if you see large areas filled with only one color than you mustn't stop workin' on the image. Perfect example for this is the girl on the firs drawing. Proportions look quite fine, but her cloth look totally flat. There isn't any light sources on that image. Try working on those areas, Use more variated colors or color dodge/burn to define shape.
The other problem I can see is contours:
I suggest that you should use contours only in the early stage of drawing (at the very beginning), try to draw the shading on a separate layer, and when the shading is ready, get rid of the contour layer. Real objects aren't bordered by contours, keep that in mind!
And thanks for the link to M@'s brushes! Man, that brush collection is really cool.
(And use attachment manager! It has changed recently, And it also took me a little time till I figured out how it works. It doesn't show attached pictures automatically. If you want the images to be shown:
1) Attach them with the attachment manager
2) Click in the text to the place where you want to paste the image
3) Click on the Attachmen manager icon - This will open a drop down list of the attached images
4) Click on the name of the image you want to paste

lalovergel: Yup, that was one of the problems I was having: i.e., taking a composition and actually finishing it.
Noverbert: Thanks for the advice. Ultimately, the contour lines would be eliminated as I progressed, but once again, the images up top are really just examples of a problem I've been having: the inability to push a paining to an ultimate conclusion. And yeah, some of my newer ones still look kind of flat. I'm still getting used to painting with color rather than with line.
Anyway, I was doodling in my sketchbook las night and came up with these.
If there's a better way to scan pencil illustrations, then I'd like to know about it.

Your sketch book starts out very promising. Those pencil drawings look very neat, but you seem not to be so sure about the scanning quality? I think it looks presentable enough.
Good luck with the speed paintings from reference. The soldier picture looks certainly great.
Wow why are you studying architecture?! On another thought, that's a good thing for me hee hee (joking! )
I really like your paintings and think that your compositions are fairly good. In #9 your eye directing is pretty good, and it tells me you understand atmospheric perspective.
#7, the very first image (the girl with red hood) and the blue robot are my fav. You have a good sense of design.

Another small update. I'm having trouble generating anything like a massive post because architecture consumes most of my time...unless you guys would like to see hundreds of Gestalt studies, or see me try and organize buildings according to the Golden Ratio, ugh. I could also teach you all a good deal about corner conditions, slots, organizing space and how not to cut yourself with an x-acto knife.
Here is a quick color study, about 30 minutes.

I'm going to start working on a tutorial of sorts. Sort of like a design tutorial, or at least the process I go through whenever I begin a design. I realize there are many ways to conceptualize and design, and if I say anything contrary to what ought to be done, I would would certainly hope other CA members would correct me.
Well, here we go:
Every design begins with a problem. Really, most of the things we are used to in life are the results of some sort of problem or need. For me, at least, its more advantageous to address the design process as a problem (for which there could be many solutions). Analyze your problem, and ask questions about it. Why is it a problem? What steps can I take to neutralize or minimize this problem. When you begin thinking critically about your problem, the design process ceases to be a spontaneous train of thought, and becomes a calculated, creative means to an end.
There are many more questions to be asked, of course, but its good to start simply.
Today, my problem is dealing with IFV's, or Infantry Fighting Vehicles.
These guys right here:
IFVs are fast, and capable of transporting infantry to combat hotspots, as well as provide that infantry necessary fire-support once on location. The question then, is, how do you deal with a fast moving target, and deal with it before it can deliver its passengers? While IFV's are generally tough looking, the actually lack substantial armor. Even though they're not well armored, the still have quite a punch in terms of offensive firepower, not to mention infantry can pour from its belly at a moments notice.
The best solution, then, would be deal with the target in transit, and use stealth as a means to ambush the target both before it can acquire you as a target and also before its occupants can exit the vehicle.
We need a weapon or vehicle that:
-has a low profile
-a means for dealing with light armor and possibly infantry
-possibly scales buildings
-has excellent mobility
I know now that I'm probably looking to design a vehicle of some kind, not a handheld weapon.
This vehicle should:
-Have a rotating turret or chassis so that it can acquire the target at advantageous angles (from the tops of buildings, high ground, ect.)
-One to two man operations crew
-excellent flexibility for getting in tough locations for sudden an quick strikes
I went ahead and conceptualize, painting very loosely, two different concepts: one bipedal and a quadrupedal.
In my next post, I'm probably going to figure out which option is the best solution for my problem, and then take the concept further, addressing issues like weapons, jointures/mechanisms, mobility, and how the vehicle is operated (among other things).
Oh yeah, I've been having trouble getting my sketchbook image (the hooded chick) to appear in the thread list. If you guys could help me out, it would be most appreciated.

MrHoboX87: I hope to push it to completion, but I'm stretched for time. I'm usually putting in like 40-50 hours a week in my architecture studios, so coming up with time to do tutorials is tough.
Rabid: You're most welcome, Rabid, thank you for posting in my sketchbook. I've followed your advice and gotten some cleaning solution and a "bulb" for my rapidograph pens. Much less mess and hassle now.
