Here's my entry:

Made in Photoshop, but with a lot of crashes! I wrote 22:10 as a start time, but when it froze, I was pissed off so I didn't come back to it after 30 min of work (1 hour) then I attempted to save it then redo it with some top cut off, but with a concidence, it actually gave me a better composition. I don't know how long I have spent on this since Photoshop didn't like me today. At least I beat it and have something presentable to show. As you can see, I have been experimenting with different brushes for textures because I was in mood for something different than the usual cheap sketch. LOL. I think it came out quite nice especially that it was my first time trying to do extreme perspective after a long "gave up" period. I don't know if that worked out so well, everything seems to be tilted. Someday when I'm more familiar, I'll try doing those camera tilt to give it more dramatic feeling, but right now, it's confusing me enough already. Need more practice.

Ok here's my crits/comments coming, better watch out! I don't mean to offend you, only simply help you.

LadyHydralisk: That came out awesome! Good usage of values and colors! The robots have almost chrome feeling to it (chrome is hard to master!!!), but the one in the middle doesn't have blue tint to make up the chrome feeling like the big robot has. Add that to the "baby" one then it should all feel chrome-like. Other thought: the background could use more depth, maybe slightly lower value for bottom and right. Maybe purple or red tinted color? No, wait, golden/orange color would work very well too. Experiment with color, go with your instinct, try to see how to make your character or object of focus pop out. And I'm not sure what's going on with bottom part? What is it? Just my two cents.

maths82: I love the texture usage with that one! Awesome color scheme/value scheme! It really works out well on this one. Anatomy wise, its right arm bothers me, it seems disconnected compared to the rest. Ah! It has no shoulder/chest part that left side has. Composition wise, it's awesome, just that the arm I have discussed earlier is still bothering me enough to ruin the focus. Other than that, it's really a great work! I love it!

Here ya go. Great to see us sketching something, it has been fun so far!

40 minute quickie. I might do another one that's less abstract, but I had to get this imagery out of my mind.

They silently proceeded on in the fading night, forgotten after centuries of servitude.

I think the roboty look could be pushed a little more in the one arm, it looks a little too organic compared to the rest of it's body. Also, the way the shoulder connects into the body seems too cramped compared to the other side of the body. Very neat brush work in the background and figure though!

LadyHydralisk
lol Did her ex boyfriend cheat on her? I sense some revenge beyond the grave here. I think your ghost lady needs more front stage time. She seems a little to crowded on the bottom!

Dm7
For all the fussing that Photoshop gave you, I think you came up with a nice piece. Great atmosphere, very moody and I get the sense some unlucky soul is going to get a sneak visit form a robot ghost. I think the ghost needs a bit more punch though as it's fading into your environment though.

Nightblue
O.O What a creepy mood, but so appropriate. I love how each one of the robots has their own body language, either fatigue/ alertness, even though they diligently plod on like they were programed to.

And here's my attempt. Not a big Sci-Fi / robot / mech artist and it probably shows. lol

Nice spooky feeling on yours, he does look ghostly. DSG is what got me started on my first robot, and my first vehicle...!

I agree. Although that fading feeling was intentional. I don't know how to make it stronger though. I wanted to get some ghosty motion blur going on with some shapes there, like you see on those "ghost" captured pictures. *shrugs* Thanks though.

Your work is awesome too! It definitely has ghost feeling to it, like the spooky posters you'd normally see in the threater or in a book. For your first robot, I think it's perfect. Way better than my.. first attempt. *cough*

LadyHydralisk: I agree with MeliHitchcock that that robot lady seems too crowded at the bottom. I couldn't tell what was going on at first so I had to ask and now, that you told me, it makes sense. I think you should extend that canvas size to the bottom to give it more room so that we can recognize what it's doing better. Just a thought.

Nightblue: Wow! When I read your comment for that image, I can feel epic-ness to it. I'm glad you captured your idea on that one, it really made me think of how humans are capable of. Both good and bad of course. Only thing I'd love to see from that artwork is maybe add some background like... ruins or... eh... well, don't know. I can't think, I gotta sleep. I just hope you know what I'm trying to say? Anyways, it's a great piece. Awesome colors.

Tommoy - Wow! That's really fantastic. Great lighting and atmosphere with the creeping mist.
senanimach9 - I like the green spirit coming out of your bots chest. Maybe more dramatic green highlights on the robot from it's spirit to give more dramatic lighting and contrasting light and dark shapes.
careless - Spooky dark feel to yours. I like the shadowy render and the subtle deadpan stare of the robot. Nice effect.
MeliHitchcock - Very forlorn, sad feel. Great expression with the twisting form and tears of fluid/blood.
Nightblue - Great scene and theme to yours. I like the cryptic feel of the bots in their haunted mass. Kind of reminds me of the King on the mountain and his green ghostly warriors in the last Lord of the Rings movie.
Dm7 - Nice dramatic angle to your scene. I like the nocturnal haunted feel of the place and the atmospheric lighting.
maths82 - Interesting composition. The form is humanoid yet the mechanical angles and shapes dispersed throughout defines the robot. The humanlike spirit of the machine. Very cold feel with the blue color. Works up the ghostly feel really well.
LadyHydralisk - Oooh! A violent haunting! Savage attacks of lightning.. maybe not quite the stimulating feeling he was thinking of. Very dynamic, action packed, scene!

Psychostrat - creepy. Reminds me of the hallway scene with the nurses in the Silent Hill movie.

Tommoy - DooM 3 flashbacks....

I'm loving this topic....

senanimach9; Same idea! Sort of.
Nice texture on the bot btw, although it adds little to the depth. You should use the strong green light better. Hightlights where the light hits the robot, some ambient light on the lower parts. Think it would help give him some structure. Think the ghost is a bit on the strong side, but I like the soft electricity-like lines, and the glow. I like the vague, mystical background too.

Quick one. Nice topic!

Thanks for the crits MeliHitccock,muleskinner and Dm7 : )
i was attempting to show the 'bots left arm torn off at the shoulder, it's a bit vague and has thrown the balance of the torso off, so yup, i agree with all suggestions about the anatomy.

my few cents:
Hamsta: really subtle and direct, sweet.
Anthis: wish i'd have thought of the spirit looking back at it shell, great concept.
Marria ha, i like it.
Tommoy great sharp hi-lights an shadows
MeliHitchcockthat's the kind of render i wish i could achieve, 'stead of having to cheat and put loads of noise in like i do : /
nightblue excellent, real strong feel to that
Dm7wicked gritty texture, conveys atmosphere really well. maybe pop the robots out a bit more, i want to see them !

This did not turn out well at all, but I figured it would be worth putting up to deliver the concept.

This is the same subject but put over a photo I took and tweaked heavily. I like it much more. (is photo manipulation allowed? hopefully)

Bismod, I think that is a cool idea.

I tweaked mine just a bit. I like it so much I am going to bring it to finish I think.

Just for fun, I wanted to show this old crappy DSG I have (I keep all of mine in one folder) that seemed similar to the topic now, and how much I have improved.
