I'll be contacting Customflix first thing on Monday to try and straighten out the international shipping if possible. It's out of our hands but I'll see what we can do.

Qitsune: We don't currently have any plans for a package deal but your suggestion is noted.

Bought it. Excited. $75.20 is pretty steep though.

The Marko Djurdjevic DVD was only $53.70.

I would also love to see an El Coro DVD. His oil paintings are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen.

international shipping prices make me angry. Thank you for the support and for picking it up though. It is new server time again for CA so the money is going to go to a good place.

At least you are not in China like me. Yumiko sent her two year old laptop back to HP to get the HD fixed and when it arrived they charged us 200 dollars in import taxes even though we only sent it out to get repaired. Sadly the laptop is maybe worth five hundred bucks.

Anyway, we are going to look into some other solutions for international shipping.

Thanks for contributing these DVD's Massive Black. The international shipping price made me gulp a bit, but knowing the quality of information inside, I reckon I would've paid twice the amount without hesitation. Thanks!

I'd have to agree with Sept13, one has to really understand what kind of knowledge this is and what worth it has to every artist out there. Although a lot of students in Europe (or elsewhere) will have a bit of hard time getting their hands on this.

Hey Guys,

This is the response we got when we inquired about the increased shipping rates:

"The United States Postal Service recently changed their rates and modified
international shipping standards. These modifications greatly impacted our
international shipping fees. We apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause.

We are actively working to improve every aspect of our service, including
our international shipping fees. Please know that your feedback is very
important to us, and we appreciate your taking the time to give us your
opinion and ask questions.

Thank you!"

The mailman decided it was a good idea to fold the package in 2 and stuff it in my tiny mailbox. Ack... fortunately the dvd's are fine, in fact I'm watching the Marko one at the moment.. and I got the Aristides's Classical drawing atelier yesterday, now I have no excuses not to study.

Just got through watching the Shawn Barber DVD.
It was absolutely fantastic.

It is VERY thorough.
It covers; brushes, paints, mediums, stretching canvas, drawing, painting, glazing...etc.

Not that I was expecting anything less, but Shawn was incredibly articulate and concise in his explanations.
Its one thing to be able to do something, its an entirely different thing to explain how to do it to someone else.
It's obvious that Shawn is a natural teacher.

Hats off to Shawn and the MB crew that made this happen.
I am a jealous man right now.

I know there seems to be some discouragement about the price.
However, as an artist, a student, and a teacher... I can honestly say its worth the price.
Personally, I can attribute 75% of my education to a few select moments when someone showed me something that just "clicked".
I have a feeling this dvd will do just that for a lot of people.

Awesome dvd, simply ace for anyone who paints with oils. Many thanks to Shaun and massive black, you are doing the world a serious service with these bad boys.

I'm really excited about this DVD, but I'm wondering do you think it will still be as helpful for those who paint with acrylic?

I'm still in the beginning stages, and it would really help for something like this from one of Favorite artists, along with the Michael Hussar dvd that never seemed to come out.

lythron, there are parts that are rather specifics (the section about mediums for exemple) but others are more universal, like the block in section, how to choose and mix colors, the general choices one makes when painting. Of course with acrylics, your don't "set yourself up" for day two because your paint is dry in 15 minutes, not overnight. I paint in acrylics or inks and I thought it was a very useful dvd. Shawn is very good at explaining why he is doing something, which is perhaps more important than how he is doing it. It also made me feel "at home with Shawn." That is, it felt like he was going about naturally in his studio and showing someone he knew how he did stuff.

I also love the small section about seting up. It covers a lot of questions that we see popping up on the forums all the time. I think all futur dvd's should have a section for small concrete tips easily accessed from the menu.

I just got a 10 buck refund for the international posting, so I reckon it's fixed now

I haven't had the time to check out the dvd in full yet, but the materials instructions are GREAT. Definetly something that every beginner should learn before even messing with oils. Shawn does a great job explaining all.

Bump...

Got the DVD today, and it frickin' rocks. Cost me about $70 in total (Norway). I think the Marko one cost me $80 or $85, so this was cheaper, yay. If you're just starting out in oils, and you're a little intimidated, buy this. It was a great fear-killer for me. And some awesome hints and tips as well.

Thank you massive black and shawn barber!

Also, Coro is one funny man.

The Shawn Barber DVD is extremely invaluable in terms of technical information and painting practice. like the marko dvd there's also a lot of really great information about work ethic, thoughts on the notion of talent, originality, etc. special care is given to the timeframe in which a painting is completed... i.e. day 1 vs. day 2, etc.

it's an immensely enjoyable and enlightening process to watch this composition develop from start to finish. Besides even the wealth of technical information, the attention paid to correcting mistakes / areas of emphasis in interest of getting a better "finished" work is truly valuable for all kinds of artmaking.

Thanks again to Shawn and the Massive Black video prod. dept. for dropping this epic tome of knowledge on us ... these dvds keep getting better and better!

a lot of companies send packages as forms of gifts.I have heard that helps them save lots of import taxes.DOnt know exactly how it works though.

Just got my copy, love it! VERY instructional, he doesn't skip on the basics, and has such a great philosophy. Thanks to all involved. I complemented the watching by going down thr street and checking out the exhibit here in NYC, I live just up the block. Cool and friendly guys inside, and a nice show!

One thing that I would have loved though, is the ability to switch angles, to maybe a closeup, his palette and the usual view. I found the few closeups amazing , and to have the ability so switch between these would have been invaluable. Ive seen it done with quite a few DVD's, but I don't know if its feasible in terms of cost, as one would need another two cameras. I would also have loved a tour of his studio space!

So support the community and become a better artist!
I also liked the 87.jpg. Which one is he?

This is a great DVD. Makes you wonder why people haven't been making them this way before. Shawn being carefree with oils does make it feel less intimidating for a beginner.

My only problem is a personal one... it's made great, but with my own hearing impairment, can't quite make out most of what he's saying. I'd pay anybody here $50 bucks for a transcript of the entire dvd, because the information is invaluable.

Also, using the disk from the dvd, thanks for including the picture of the set up there. I'm planning on printing it out so I can look at it as I go along with the video. I'm surprised there wasn't a picture of the final painting included on the disk as well, for the same reasons.

All in all, it's an absolute great dvd. Thanks Shawn.

got my dvd in the mail two days ago.

awesome stuff...i previously bought the djurdjevic dvd, and i have to say that this one works better as an instructional video. don't get me wrong, i absolutely love djurdjevic's dvd, but i feel it tends more towards being inspirational and about the frame of mind needed for character conceptualization. barber's dvd offers plenty of inspiration, but succeeds better in the instructional department!

highly reccommended!
