SELLING YOUR ART - Free podcasts by art rep with 20 years experience

I'm a recently retired, full-time, art rep and artist with more than twenty years experience selling art work to galleries, interior designers and architects. The art marketplace supported my family for all those years and the artists and customers I worked with were some of the finest, most talented folks one could meet. I'd like to "give back" some of what I learned to other artists. To do so, I've recorded a series of podcasts (talkcasts) FREE to anyone with an iPod, MP3 player or computer. Please listen and, perhaps, learn some tips to better market your art. Here's how:
THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – Part I This podcast is the first of three articles published in AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE on how to sell your art to THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK.
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=13728

THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – Part II This podcast is the second in the art marketing series THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OVERLOOK. If you are an artist this information will help you sell art and build a solid customer base.
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=13925

THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – Part III This podcast concludes the three part series for artists who want information on how to sell their work to THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK, based on my twenty years experience as a full time artists' rep and producing artist.
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=14271

ARE THERE SECRETS TO SELLING ART? In this podcast I share the SECRETS OF SELLING ART based on 20 years as a producing artist and full time art rep to hundreds of Interior Designers, Decorators, Architects and Galleries.
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=11313

ARE THERE SECRETS TO SELLING ART? Part 2 In this podcast I'll talk about marketing techniques I used to sell thousnds of dollars worth of my own art and art produced by others. This is a "must listen" for artists who want to sell their own work.

Listen in by copying and pasting the http address into the URL box on your computer.
All podcasts by Richard Harrison may be accessed by logging on to www.talkshoe.com and typing: Dick Harrison in the Search Box.
I hope these are useful.
Thanks for listening,
Dick Harrison

Sounds interesting, thanks for putting these together & posting here! I'll start listening this evening!

to people who are using iTunes: you can search podcasts for "Dick Harrison" which will find the lectures/talkcasts as well and makes it comfortable to add them to your library

Dorian,
Thanks for the comment.
Artists from eight countries have responded to these art marketing podcasts and because their questions were so good I've taken some of the best and done two more podcasts with answers I think will help artists sell successfully.
Links to the original podcasts I've done are in the post above and I urge you to listen to them, if you have not already done so, as well as the questions and answers on this podcast -
15 QUESTIONS EVERY ARTIST NEEDS ANSWERED:
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=24994

THE ART BIZ – WHO GETS HOW MUCH AND WHY This podcast will help any artist understand how THE ART BUSINESS actually works - how galleries, designers, architects and artists split the cash when a piece of art is sold.
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web...pisodeId=19729

If you have questions, please post them here, on the previous link or send them on by email. I'll try my best to answer. Together, as we share information and experience selling your own art will become easier.
Thanks,
Dick Harrison

cool, thanks!
I enjoyed the other episodes (right word..?) a lot, and am downloading the new ones now!

There is something that would be really nice but I don't know how complicated that is for you:
instead of making different podcasts you could have one podcast called "sales tipps for artists" (or similar) with all your sessions/tracks as episodes. So:

Episode 1: THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – I
Episode 2: THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – II
Episode 3: THE MAMMOTH MARKET ARTISTS OFTEN OVERLOOK – III
Episode 4: ARE THERE SECRETS TO SELLING ART? - I
Episode 5: ARE THERE SECRETS TO SELLING ART? - II
Episode 6: 15 QUESTIONS EVERY ARTIST NEEDS ANSWERED
Episode 7: THE ART BIZ – WHO GETS HOW MUCH AND WHY?
Episode8: ...

this way one could just subscribe to the "sales tipps for artists" podcast and always get your new episodes. And I do hope there will be more

Some general feedback:
- sometimes the quality isn't top notch, sounds like the mic gets bumped around or it's affected by your breath
- some (subtle ) music in the intro might be cool

Some questions I think would be interesting:
- what can an artist do, to let people know about him? Clients/Buyers, partners (agents, reps, galleries), etc.
- where and how can an artist find good partners? (as above) I guess word of mouth is best? But does it make sense for artist friends with similar styles to have the same agent/rep? (ahm.. what's the difference between agents and representatives? .. )
- how does the reproduction market work? what motives sell? and where? Should certain types of originals NOT be reproduced? if so, why? (portraits of "normal people" for example?)
- how do limited editions work? why should an artist do or NOT do a limited serie and when?
- who buys art online and who doesn't? what types of art sells more online, what types of art sell better "offline"?

thank you sir, keep it up!

Dorian,
These are GREAT questions! (and excellent suggestions about sound quality)
I'll soon have all the art marketing podcasts as episodes in a single master link. I'm working on other requested subjects: HOW SHOULD I PRICE MY ORIGINALS? HOW SHOULD I PRICE MY GICLEES? BARTERING YOUR ART FOR FUN AND PROFIT (I've traded my own art for everything from Carribbean cruises to $25,000 worth of carpeting, landscaping, solar hot water and architectural drawings for a previous house, accounting and tax services for the art reping business.) I'll be doing another "question and answer" podcast and will include your questions as I also post answers on this link and on other forums.
Thanks for the encouragement!
