Yay, get to vote first! Let he who has no entry cast the first vote!

I'd like to congratulate all the photographers who ran in this competition, it was a very good one with great results.

It was a tough choice, esp between Klips, in.essensce, marlboro and purple rose, who for me had the best compositions abd were preety much the highlights of the challenge. A really tricky situation so i decided to go with vinc on this one.

Vinc's entry is the one who really give's me the feeling of silence and resting, isolated from the outside mayhem of the Autobahn. Cheers on a great composition my friend and welcome back to the forums. Lets see more of you arround here (gee, that sounds strange)

Cheers!

Hi everyone,

Morbid is right about the favs, purplerose's and vinc's entries convey a great feeling of rest, especially.

My vote goes to klips, however, as his photo for me slightly transcends the usual rest (as does Rhynome's, but the impact wasn't as high... experimental entries like those of in.essence are great photos, but didn't hammer the meaning of the challenge topic home for me... just subjective, that's all).

Always great to see all the entries.

I had a hard toss up between Vinc and Marlboro, and it was not easy to choose. Eventually I went for Marlboro, because I love those super-high contrasty shots and the angle is excellent.

Excellent number of entries this week, congrats to everyone who made the effort and joined in

Between Nightspiritwing and vinc for me. Voted for vinc. It has a nice mood and I'm no stranger to falling asleep in the car. Heal those dust specks buddy!

My vote went to klips this time... The lights being blurred like that shows that a bit of time has passed and the person is just sitting there (resting ). Morbid was a close second, but I thought the subject in his was more on the restER than the resting place... All that, besides the fact that klips' picture was just plain awesome

Mine was a toss up between klips and morbid. I always love ya'lls photos.

I chose morbid though because his was closest to an idea I was going to do for this challenge, which I was very upset that I was unable to because it wouldnt stop raining and when it would, I was at work. I was really excited about this challenge. But perhaps I will post it on another thread. Anyway, GREAT job to everyone =)

That and I still have no votes anyway *sniffles*.

Right, public assessment time. As with just about everyone else I narrowed it down:
Vinc;
Purplerose;
Marlboro.

As for good points Vinc's photo has quite some. First off, the guy's resting, secondly he's resting in the car: resting place. As for composition it's greyscale, so it means there's little distraction for where the eye goes; it goes pretty much straight to the fellow off to the left, and his nice healthy, shiny nose. The rest of the photo doesn't pull all too much attention, merely setting the scene and leaving you to focus on the resting guy. Also, I'm not sure how intentional this was, or if it wasn't intentional how much governed by the 'Oh, take photo like this!' voices in his head it was, but the subject of the photo is off to the left hand side, this means that as he is shifting off shot and it's as though the subject is somewhat resting from being in direct shot.

Purplerose took a photo that I just seem to like; it seems I have a slight fetish for greyscale recently. The position of the little doggy nose, medium doggy eyes and huge doggy eyes in the shot are just pretty funky. The dog's sitting there sort of chilled, just... being dog. The background is all sparkly but not too attention grabbing and puppy is lovely and sharp. For some reason, also, the grass bottom left sort of forms a line to the sparkliness top right, and that runs straight through the dog's face; that really does something for the photo.

Marlboro's photo has the lines, the people resting, and despite the activity a very clear indication of what you're meant to be looking at, especially as one of them is effectively looking at you. That brings alot of appeal to the photo for me.

Now, of course I can't do Ayes without Nos.
autobahn has its downsides, it's little things that make the Robert thing 'Eep.' For example, I can just see the writing on the guy's shirt, major booboo for the Rob, what does it say? What font is it? I remember having this problem with el Racoon's photos, the font used for the photos just drove me crazy when I tried to place it. Although the nose is nice and shiny, and attention grabing, there's still that white sky and those white lines streaking across. It seems I have no choice but to look at those lines and my eyes goes shooting back and forth over them like some kind of pre-war typewriter. I just keep running back and forth across them, and don't even get me started on those mysterious dark blobs 2/3 up.

Sadly Purplerose just didn't quite capture what I thought was resting. Although it was a good photo of a dog and although the dog was chilling; it was still a dog. For a dog that's not particularly resty, that's just it being a big dog (as opposed to some annoying yappy small thing, or maybe a Springer Spaniel, but I've seen even those go like puppy in photo). So it doesn't really capture the idea of 'resting place' that fantastically for me. On a more lines and the likes base the ground isn't horizontal; always overlooked but always distracting.

Marlboro's can be summed up as bright, blurry and somewhat hyperactive. Now I know that's half the appeal, but the brightness does pull you away from the resting place along those tile lines especially, the blurriness just distracts, but only by a small amount, the hyperactivity... well, there's alot of change between black and white all through the picture and also that guy in the centre there, the tiles lead straight to him, he's calling out and getting just a little too much attention.

I like to vote for the photo that is the best photo-wise, but there's also the matter of the challenge title. When it comes to the challenge that always outweighs it for me. If ever I see a brilliant photo up against a not so great one, well, brilliant one obviously, but when it comes to challenges if that not so great one fits the topic better than the brilliant one then it gets much more consideration and has quite a strong chance because of it.
I liked the photos mentioned and I also liked many of the others (For example Klips's has that 'off to the left' thing [but is quite busy for my mood recently], Mr. Mu's is all shiny and resty [though the nose draws way too much attention; it's more as though his nose is resting than him personally.] and other such cases.) Though when it comes down to it, with it all weighed up (How much I like the photo as a photo and how much it fits the challenge) I just have to go for Vinc, there's just something about that photo that I think grabs the concept best of them all; it has a quality of being very in your face, there's no denying that this is about Rest or a Resting Place and the ultimate decider for this is that the composition of the photo plays a very, very major part in doing that.
It's not the two seperate things; a good description of the challenge title and a good photo in terms of composition twinned. In this case they are very definately one and the same thing, so that's why I went for it.

(Ah, my public assessments are only here for helping me make up my own mind, hah and you read all this thinking that maybe I'd say something worthwhile... cute.)

My vote went to Vinc, because of his very moody pic where the motion of the landscape passing by outside the window stands in contrast to the still person sleeping, and stenghtens the sense of rest.

Honorary mention goes out to Purplerose and Klips, you were my close seconds.

first of all, thanks for the votes so far, especially to Rhynome. Thanks for this great analyse, i didnt noticed this text-prob till now, and you are right.. its a little bit disturbing.

i went for malboro's entry, cause i like the story, told by this picture, ich like this contrast between dark and bright and how it supports the compositional contrast, these moving people and those 2 sitting right there for a break.

Cheers on a great challenge. Before we close this Thread I'd like to announce that we will be featuring a new award starting this Challenge. After a talk with the some of the other mods we decided that give the great entries in the last rounds of the Photo Challenge and the fact that there is only one winner we should also have:

The Hugses Award
.

This will go to photographers that had great entries but didn't win the challenge. So this week:

The Hugses Award Goes to: Marlboro and Klips.
.

Great entries you guys! Lets keep up the great work.

Cheers!
