Kazyl's sketchbook

Sup. New to the boards.

I've been pretty disenchanted with the whole art deal lately. I feel as though I'm not creative enough to make a living with my drawings and that this is more of a hobby than a potential source of income. Regardless, I enjoy drawing and I want to get back into it.

I've followed the lead of a friend who directed me here to his sketchbook and decided to make one for myself on a practically dead forum. I had intended to make it a daily thing but apparently life has gotten the best of me. I hope to keep this thread alive with close to daily updates with whatever I dish out in the hopes that I can find my place in this thing called art.

A bit about me:

I'm 20. I live in Southern California. Doing the community college deal until I figure out what I want to do with my life. I figure photography is the way to go. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to drawing. I stick to what I know as I tend to lose confidence when I try something new. Uh. I guess that's all I got. Riveting self introductory.

Anyway, on to the good stuff.
1.
I want to try more dynamic poses. I've grown accustomed to the standard profile shot and anything beyond standing up straight and facing forward or to the side was too scary to attempt. But I want to make progress and grow. I didn't use a reference for this although it would have been a good idea to.

2.
I've grown quite fond of inks. However, they take me a long time to complete. I approach it by gradually building up tone and that takes awhile where dark areas are involved. For example, his hair is supposed to be solid black.

3.
Same guy as before. I rather enjoy drawing him. He has these pretty amazing eyes that I tried desperately to emulate. I'm not a big fan of color but subtle hints of one or two is fine.

Anyway. Thanks for taking the time in viewing my little corner of the internet. Comments and critiques are appreciated.

Hey bud

Great start! You got more replies then me! Guess people don't like boring studies, copied ones at that. J/k

No crits yet, but you have lots of potential. Love the stylized lines in the first one. It's funny, another friend - in a somewhat similar circumstance as I - recently started drawing also and blew my start out of the water creatively as you have here.

I'm in a little creative rut right now. So you'll probably see more studies from me for now. It's so cool that people all around me are starting to draw again. It makes me want to try 10x harder. Good stuff and keep drawing!

Hm... This drawing thing kinda fell through. Anyway, here's something I've been working on for a good part of the day. I'm not one for character design that goes beyond the standard t-shirt and pants get up, but every now and then, it's fun to try.

This was for another forum thing. Draw users. This particular guy seemed like a pretty happy and positive person. When I tried to think of something that embodied that, I kept thinking of a flute, so I tried to incorporate that into it. I got the idea from a Keichi Sumi artbook. Neat stuff.

Not too sure how I feel about it at this point..

I really enjoy the armor detail that you put into the last one. I have a soft spot for things that look futuristic.

For the style that you're going for, i'd say you're doing a very fine job. I'd be interested to see you post more of some other styles.

Good work so far! I look forward to your future updates!

This probably took as long as the flute bard. I didn't want to get so bogged down in the costume design like I did with that one so I focused more on the construction of it. I added the textures digitally but I want to go back and physically add them in. It'd be nice to have a finished product in hand.

Thank you guys for your feedback.

Looks like a touch of Yoshitaka Amano to me.

Very cool. The hint of color thing you spoke of is showing. Moody. Love the style.

Rawr.

So apparently the daily drawing thing didn't pan out so well. I don't know what sparked this sudden burst of drawing lately, but I got a hold of some brush pens and have been messing around with them, trying to become proficient in something messy. It's weird how when I start using a medium heavily, I don't feel like I can use another medium, even if I felt confident with it at the time.

That being said, here's one of the better sketches:

Really quick and easy. Started out with the gray base and then added the black. I tried other approaches and a fast one seems to yield nice results. Which is cool cause I'm trying to get out of my meticulous mentality.

This one is a few weeks/months old:

Strips of news paper, covered it with geso. Added the pinkish (supposed to be red) inkwash texture. Outlined in pencil. Added a base tone with an inkwash then went over it with charcoal.

One thing that really helped me get the proportions right was turning it upside down. You really start to see the shapes.

I hope to keep up this creative surge.
