The Umbrella Mans sketchbook

This is my sketchbook, I posted it before but for some reason it didn't take so I'm doing it again. A friend of mine told me I should post my stuff here to get crits and whatnot so I might get a little better.

Riley model sheet from Adventures in Purgatory

Xaodinat from Adventures in purgatory.

These are my first attempts at painting anything. My first attempts at painting were done with a marker abstract technique.

Second attempt

This is by far my fave.

Architects house from AIP. Now an environment of the week subject.

damn you need a scanner
just a suggestion if you can, before you post shorten the value range so the whites are white and the darks are black..
looks like you are exploring a lot of things.
looking forward to updates and welcome to CA

A metric shit-ton of stuff I was experimenting with. I just let my hand do whatever, didn't really care for the results.

Your on the right track with your drawings. My only suggestion, from looking at your Bridgman studies is to sharpen your pencils more when drawing. Also ease up on the pencil while working. You are pressing way to hard on your pencil while you work.

great studies... only thing to crit is the last one. fingers are too blobby
some places you use to many edges. many lines are overdefined.

keep sharing...

try drawing the form instead of the out line. maybe looking for more solid volume. (msn if this doesnt make sense)
and draw more.....

hey Umbrella man,
I really like the way you draw, and dont sell yourself short! there is so much potential in your work! What I would suggest for your environments, is to grab a sketchbook, pencils/paints whatever, and go and sketch outside from life - anything that inspires and excites you!I think this will help you with compositions/perspectives (I really love that tree you drew from life) keep up the good work!

Took a trip to the Grand Central Art Center to see Myron Conan Dyals art show. I managed to sneak a picture of some of his sculptures. For anyone living near Santa Ana California I highly suggest going. It's a really cool exhibit. All paper mache sculptures. He seems to like skulls women and plants alot.

waw you're doing a lot of studies! i like the way you draw the muscles. hehe

you could probably adjust your colors. they really look bland or something. play with different hues and stuff.

and that exhibit sounds fun, i wish i could be there. ^^

Thanks, I am trying to get back to my roots which was western style comic book art. I found that when I allow myself to draw like I want to and stop worrying about what others think, it comes out better.

Still have a long ways to go yet. Thanks for stopping by.

So last night I had a breakthrough, both in style, and maybe a little in color. I call this the black man that changed everything.

I had never tried coloring or even drawing a black person before, and I found his features very easy to portray, and his skin was amazingly simple to color. I learned something about not only skin tones but about shadow placement and saturation. I still have a ways to go, but this helped. I think I found my style after this page, and I am quite happy with the results.

Some poses for John from my game. Figured I would keep drawing while I had the momentum. These poses will act as comic book frames for cut scenes.

Another sprite monster. My favorite so far. Might change the left arm though. I think it may look a little awkward.

thanks for checking out my sb.

for you I would suggest you begin to measure and pay attention to proportions of the form. often noses get too long and chins jut too much.

keep practicing!!

@snubbed: I will start my next piece with those things in mind. Right now I am playing around with rendering. Probably a good a time as any.
