Welcome to my sketchbook.

My most sincere thanks to the CA community for your support and guidance during my time here.
I wouldn't be where I am without you guys.

Entry #2
Sorry for bad quality pics, as some were done on A3 and taken with a digi-cam.

This is improved version of the demon in entry 1.

Photo reference study.

Some gestures from my 3rd life drawing class (yay).

... And here's the 15 minute sketch from the same session.

Otter study from my photo taken at the zoo. Part of an animal character design assignment. 40 minutes approx.

EDIT: Transfered an image to attachment so i can get a little display pic for the thread. ^.^

Definitely more like the babe in the hat. If it takes five hours to crank out something like that, then damnit, do it! You've got a lot of promise - invest some time into the rest of your stuff and you'll have a really fantastic sketchbook. Watch the whites of those eyes - people don't really, you know. Have whites, unless you happen to be shining floodlights into their face. Shade those suckers in so they sink back a bit.

Thanks Myxomatosis. I've been meaning to do more pieces like that but... i'm just so lazy . Holiday break is coming up soon, though, i'll definitely do another then.

Really digging the photo study. Your figures have promise, i would just reccomend working on line confidence, and not so many scratchy lines. Learn to just strike the line you want in one stroke. A good excersize for developing line control is to make a dot on a page and draw a line to the dot, in one stroke. Make the motion over the page a few times and then bam, strike it. Best of luck, and keep it up!

Great tip, HellTaxi. Thanks.
I did realize i need to practice line control, but not quite sure how to go about it. I'll be trying your trick.

hey there! nice drawings! the female study at the top is really nice. the form feels very dementional. the gestures are nice too! keep em coming. the secret to drawing people is to draw them....all the time. keep a little sketchbook with you at all times, draw people as much as you can. there is nothing better then seeing them with your own eyes and getting what you see onto paper. dont get into the habit of using photos too much untill you can do it with your own eyes first. even gosu artist use photos but they all learned to paint/draw from life. keep pushing. ill stop in when you have more.

take care

Big update!

I've decided to put some effort into my work, instead of insulting your eyes with crap.
My first year at animation school is almost over. Drawn alot of cartoons, done some life drawing. Had a great time and learned heaps.

I've decided i need to step it up another notch to improve my skills. This time, i'm really serious about anatomy. I've been learning about human anatomy from books and videos, e.g. Andrew Loomis and Riven Pheonix's "Drawing the human figure from the mind" series. The video series i found especially helpful, just like having a teacher. These have also been keeping me motivated to draw everyday, because i can just sit down and draw along with it.

So without further adue, here're some stuff i've done for the past half year.

You'll notice the lastest couple of entries are in pen. This was when i discovered i had attained enough line control that i could use a pen without making a mess. I was quite happy with this, and now enjoy drawing with a pen. This is also the start my journey of learning to drawing the human figure without reference.

C&C would be much appreciated. Thanks for all the encouragement, and thanks for viewing!

4/12/06 Update

Update! Yay!
I have some concerns about the skull construction.
On the last page, you can see i've constructed a skull using the method i learned from the Riven Pheonix videos. I compared it to a real skull and the differences are suggnificant.
Is the Pheonix's method incorrect? Did i construct it badly? Is this real skull just retarded?

try using less lines, it helps, line confidence and all that. It looks like you are correcting your proportions as you do more work, which is good. Keep it up, the whole learning and growing thing.

And since you are taking a life drawing class I will be expecting more out of you

Nice stuff!
I suggest that for at least a little while, you just work with line, and no value. See how far you can push it. This might also push you to improve you line quality. This will also allow you to focus on proprtions etc.
Keep drawing!

You are showing improvement, keep up the practice. Let me offer some critiques. Your lines are scratchy, I think you could benefit by trying to draw from the shoulder and elbow. If you find it difficult to not draw with your wrist, try holding your pen differently. It will improve your work by 100% once your line get more confident.

Also the head proportions you are using are off, stop using whatever is causing you to construct heads like that before it hurts you. I would suggest buying a skull to draw a few hundred times, that will give you a solid foundation for head drawing.

Here are some head drawings from Glenn Vilppu that will assist you. The last three show the best examples.

Thanks for the comments! Thanks for the links, IILooney. Vilppu rocks.

Shame on my for leaving my sketchbook to die.
I've been working on the things you guys have brought up. Line confidence and head construction.
I think my line confidence is steadily increasing. Can't say that the heads have been going quite as well, though.

Unfortunately, my digicam doesn't want to play with XP64 so I'll have to load up my life drawings another time.

Starting with a few bits that I didn't post from the end of last year.

Thanks for looking!

It's hard to critique those laast few, but it seems to me that you're still using line to define most interior shapes. I know it's hard to delineate things with pen, but start hatching lightly at least.

Great studies though, keep 'er up

Thanks for your replies.

Rhineville: I should have mentioned that I was specifically experimenting with crosshatching on those two pen pieces. It also helps with my line confidence.

adam278 : Thank you. I've got a lot of life drawing classes lined up (yay!).
I look forward to all your critiques on those.

Heyup HK,

I have to say I am very impressed with your work. I like the rendering job on the trains.
So answer me this if you will, where do you get your ideas from?
Are they thoughts of your own or do you draw from observation or pictures?

I look forward to seeing the live model pics.

GreekGodMan: The majority of my anatomy drawings are from picture reference. I've got life drawings in there as you can see.
The train drawings are quick perspective studies I do when I'm waiting for my train.

zacharybear: Hey dude. Thanks for looking.

Your stuff is definitely improving. Keep working on your anatomy and mark making. Try to get some more flowing lines going. Those short, choppy marks are really killing those last couple life drawings. When you're shading, try to keep the marks going with the plane they're trying to define. Keep at it. Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

Yeah, I get a lot of criticism about my line quality, haha. Wish I had nice lines like you. T.T
I'm gonna have to work on it. Hard.

You get a lot of criticism because line quality is quite easy to see. Your lines seem to have already gotten better, I think.
You could try some blind contour drawing (you know, drawing without looking at the paper), it did me wonders. As well as drawing lots of fast gestures (where you don't have the time to go over your lines more than once) and, as said, just drawing lots of lines. Really think about your lines for some time - you can repeat and repeat and get nicer line quality, but you'll get it faster, if you put your mind to work aswell.

hey man, hurray for studies! i think you are already on the right track for improvement, just keep studying and make sure you know what you are focusing on in each study, not just mindlessly copying stuff, not saying thats what you were doing, everything here looks like you have put thought into it, so well done

also, yay for NZ CAers!

I'm by no means an expert, but something that my drawing instructor has said will improve your confidence and line quality (which are both related) - doing master copies, but doing them in under 15 minutes. Not just a section of it, but the entire thing. The short choppy marks are very time consuming, so if you limit yourself in time, you'll be forced to do more flowing linework. (Your proportions may be off because of it, but that will improve over time.)

Grab a copy of "Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters", or a similar book that has plates on each page, and just do one or two a night. I've been doing them for a couple of weeks and can already feel an improvement, at least in what I'm able to do in a short period of time.
