Dragon concepts

I've seen the concept art for the McFarlane dragon s3 concept.
Hated it.
Gave me some motivation to create my own dragon concept.

Some here they come. Most will be reworked, if not completely redrawn, since I am not happy with them.

Didn't liked this much...

So I've redrawn it:

Still not really happy with it, expect a second update.

I hate front view, but had to try it anyway. The face seems a bit messed up to me and doesn't really gives a good idea how it really look.

Old one actually, but I like the idea. Blind, deaf, noseless. It see with 'ultra sound' like a bat. Feels every little vibration and see them.

Didn't liked how it resulted actually. It use the large claws on its wings to climb on rocky surface, so the wings need to be bigger.
Though, I added a quick background to it, and I am surprised how much more it gives to the drawing.. and yes, I know the rock looks horrible. (YES, it is rocks.)

Made not long ago, but didn't had in mind to create concept or anything when I've done it, but I guess it is interesting enough to post it here.

Bigger version here.

New one:

On your first two dragons... I like the first one better. His posture seems to be more natural. Out of all the dragon concepts I like the "ultra sound" one. Just seems like an interesting idea.

Actually, the 'ultra sound' one is the only one that have some 'fluff' behind it, other than the one that use its wings to climb.

Added a new one.

You have some very nice ideas.

The first thing I notice is a problem in perspective and figure placement, like in the first and second dragon. They don't transmit the idea of being well established on a ground plane. This problem in perspective and figure placement adds to a sort of "flat" look on the dragons. My advice would be to study some perspective, and practice placing simple objects like squares, cylinders, rectangles, etc. Then you can build up your figures on simple shapes, adding the anatomy later.

Another problem is the lighting. On nearly all of them, it looks as if the lighting is comming directly from the front. Generally, this is not a good lighting, because it kills the form. Try establishing a lightsource at an angle to get a good range of light tones, midtones, shadows, and cast shadows.

With the exception of the last one, compositionally I kinda like how they look Still, it would be good to study up on composition as well. After you study lighting, study tonal composition.

The books by Andrew Loomis cover these topics and many more, if you don't have them you can get them online at places like www.saveloomis.org

Keep doing what you're dooing, but study the formal subjects like anatomy, lighting, perspective, composition, etc at the same time, and try to merge the two. Incorporate what you study into what you already do. It will give it more punch.

Cheers.

Of the first two I think the second is better. I really like the design of the last dragon. It's nice to see a new idea with something like dragons, with can be full of cliches.
