LOTR Sketchbook Booksigning w/Feeb

The Alan Lee Lord of the Rings Sketchbook Booksigning.

Last night, the artist/illustrator Alan Lee was at the Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver discussing how his visions of the Tolkien classic were translated into the movie trilogy.

We were treated to a slide show, with some of Mr. Lee’s personal photos, as well as many of his sketches that didn’t make it into the book. What this man can do with a simple pencil surpasses what many can do with paint.

There was a good sized crowd, including myself, and one of our esteemed admins, Feeb. Feeb was fortunate enough to get his book autographed before the presentation, so I was able to capture that moment, but my book was autographed after, and Feeb had to leave right after the presentation, so my moment is one of “you had to be there.” It was awesome, and the book is awesome.

Fantastic, Maddy. I wish I'd been there! I've loved his stuff for years and years.

Oh, and I think madster took the photos. I'm willing to bet a sizable sum that the big guy behind Feeb is not madster. I want to know why your sig-oth didn't shoot you with Mr. Lee (working, perhaps?).

I didn't know what to expect, as there were no pictures online of the contents of the book.

I was amazed. The subtleties of shading, the absolutely fabulous detailing and beautiful anatomy...simply breathtaking. And the sketches he shows in his presentation are by and large, NOT in the book, making the experience even MORE fabulous!

My husband fell on the floor laughing at the hair in Mr. Lee's ears when he saw the pics...

You're right, Tim, I was the person taking the photos, and it was my "trip to the Big City" adventure, so I was solo, and stupidly didn't take my tripod, or I would have set the camera up to do a delayed shot...Ah well...live and learn. I was a noob at going to a booksigning, but I still got some cool pics...
Here are a couple more from the presentation...

All photos courtesy of my Kodak DX7590 kick-ass camera...

Damn, that is so cool. Stuff like this never happens in Detroit. What an experience that must have been. BTW, I was born in Aurora.
