Angled straight lines with a brush.
davi won't like me posting this....
im trying to get angled straight lines using a brush and not the line tool in painter. feng says that he rotates the canvas and uses the shift key to get a straight line and this just goes straight accross the screen and doesnt worry about the rotation to do stuff like this. (this is a pic from one of fengs tuts, www.fengzhudesign.com) but when i rotate the canvas and try to get a straight line it just sticks with the canvas and doesnt care about the rotation. can anyone help?

I have exactly the same problem. I know a bad workaround though. If you don't care about pressure sensitivity (and because of that your lines look boring), you can use the "straight line strokes" funktion. But its a really bad workaround so if anybody knows a better method, I'm waiting for it.

Hmm, well if he's using photoshop it's pretty easy without rotating the canvas. You click then hit shift and click where you want the line to end. Can't figure out how to do this in painter. How do you rotate the canvas in PS?

Click the E key to activate the Rotate Page tool. Click and drag in the image to temporarily rotate the entire image to an angle that's more comfortable for you. Click the B key to return to painting and paint the line. Click the E key again any time you want to rotate the image again, or click in the image to return it to its normal, upright position. For Straight Line Strokes painting: Click the V key. Click in the image to begin the straight line. Click generally where you want the line to end and before letting go, drag to the exact position where you want the line to end. Let go and to begin another straight line, click the V key again and repeat the steps. For Lines that both follow a specific path and also display Expression: In Painter IX, to paint any line, straight or curved (even a closed Shape) and have it follow an exact path, click the P key to activate the Pen tool. Draw the line. In the Layers list, highlight the resulting Shape. On the Property Bar, click the Aligh to Path icon. Choose a brush variant, then paint following the Shape (line) and your brushstroke will follow the Shape's path and also retain Expression for that particular brush variant (i.e Opacity, Size, Grain, etc.). Portus,
Using that method, the brushstroke is constrained to only 45 or 90 degrees. In Painter IX, that only requires holding down the Shift key before beginning the brushstroke. In Painter 8, we need to hold down Shift (Mac OS) or Alt+Shift (Windows). In Painter 6 and Painter 7, we need to hold down the Alt/Option+Shift keys. Jinny

cheers jin and everyone, very good knowledge you have.
yeah after viewing a couple of feng preview dvds and interviews i found out that he just does it by rotating the canvas and doing it freehand... ![]() which gives him those slighty over done straight lines that we all know and love. so i shouldnt be so scared of over doing a straight line over wise it will be unsure and wobly looks like a lot more practice for me, i think its because most of time I don't draw straight lines enough like in perspective enviroments and vehicle designs. I think that if you can do a more perspective, non organic work you can be a lot more versatile as a concept artist and get more jobs. just a thought. ![]()
