APPROVED by JASON! ConceptArt.Org MEMBER Artcard Designs w/template at top
NOTE: HERE is a .psd template for a "Standard Business Card" of 2 x 3.5 inches, with 1/4 " border all around for bleed, and 1/4" in from that all around for text placement. It is at 300ppi. Just download it, and open it in PS or painter, and you're set to go!
It's Friday, stupid ideas tend to bubble up in my conciousness more as the weekend approaches... Today's Flight of Fantasy: ConceptArt.Org MEMBER Artcard Designs (or "MADs"). * ConceptArt.Org has almost 30,000 members, around the world, in all walks of Life. * The central "focus" of CA is Art * A well established custom among people is to exchange Business Cards * A very popular "hobby" currently are ATCs, or "Artist Trading Cards," which are the size of Playing cards, created and traded amongst artists. My Proposal: With Jason Manley's Generous Permission to use the site's name and the CA Logo, we, as members, have the opportunity to design our own, individualized MEMBER Artcard Designs, the size of Regular Business Cards. The cards can display your personal art, or possibly one of a number of "standard" CA Member Artcard Designs, and you can print them yourself or have them done in masses. It's up to the member. The cards would have ConceptArt.Org MEMBER, with the User's name, Country of Origin, and Join Date on them. Any art or no art can also be on the card. Members can put other contact info on them or not, at their choice. They can also autograph them on the back for those with artwork... Whenever a situation arises and CA members meet, These CA MEMBER Artcard Designs can be exchanged like regular business cards. Comicons, Massive Black Workshops, Sketch Jams...Wherever you go, if the subject of art, or CA comes up, you can give someone your MEMBER Artcard Design, and if they have one, get one. This could be almost a "secret handshake"-type Pokemon collection (gotta get 'em ALL!!!), and would also help spread the gospel of CA across the world. Say you go to a Book Signing, like the Alan Lee LOTR Sketchbook Signing tour currently travelling the US. As Mr. Lee signs your book, you give him a CA MEMBER Artcard Design (MAD) that you've designed, as you thank him...At the end of the book tour, he's collected maybe a couple of dozen different Art Cards, all quietly promoting CA...Maybe Mr. Lee is a member of CA, maybe not. But, if you traveled a lot, and had people from all over giving you artistic cards mentioning an art site, might you not be tempted to at least check it out? Members could send cards to each other. We could have a MEMBER Arcard Design (MAD) exchange thread, or a design thread, to provide MADs for those wanting ready made images for their cards... I think it would be an interesting way for members to identify each other, be a bit more "acive" as members, have some fun, and share some of their art... So, I'm "running this up the flagpole" to see who "salutes" the Concept. Additional brainstorming ideas are welcome, Just hit the backbutton if you think the idea sucks, please don't shit on it, just ignore it. Thanks! It's voluntary, it's simple. If you DON'T think it will work, good for you, keep the negativity to yourself, PLEASE!!!! Those of you going to Prague could bring back some MADs from all the cool people you meet...(if you could get 'em made in less than 13 days...) If the "Big Boys" here made them, imagine the trading abilites! "I'll trade you an Android, and an El Coro for your extra Jason Manley..." "Nope, it'll also cost you your MikeCorriero..." ~M Last edited by madster; October 11th, 2005 at 03:11 PM.. |

Nevermind the cards, think kitsch; I say we do POGS! Then we can say dirty things like, "I'll slam your Marko with my Android!!!"

I dunno... we could have big brass slammers as TD prizes... and the most coveted would be the .5'' thick Manky83 24k gold slammer.
Just so I have this straight, would there be a template for all of the cards and we add in our own art for ourselves, or can we make honorary cards for other members? *sharpens her obscenely inappropriate photo manip skillz*

My basic idea is that (with Jason's permission) we have the ConceptArt.Org typeface/logo on the card, because that would be the one thing ALL the cards would have in common.
Then, you would have your Username, and Join date on the card. That's what shows this as a CA_MEMBER Artcard Design (MAD). Beyond that, anything goes. Make it like a baseball Card, but Business Card sized. Put your first drawing from the age of 3 as your "rookie year" card. Put your picture on it, with a bright pink moustache...Put your avatar on it.... Then, give em away. Preferably trading between each other as members, or collecting them at things like Workshops in Prague and the like... You could just put the file up here at CA, and if someone wanted to add YOUR card to their collection, they could print if off, and maybe have you autograph it if they ever meet you in person (Lord, think how Jason could get mobbed just for his signature!), or you can send them back and forth between members. A suggestion was made to offer a "Mass Swap," where you'd send like, 25 cards, and get 25 different cards back... I think "honorary" cards might be fun, but you should put "Honorary Member" on it...Hmmm...those could be interesting, too to trade for... ~M Last edited by madster; October 10th, 2005 at 07:14 PM.. |

For professionals who are unfamiliar with CA, it could certainly bolster traffic for the site. For those who are familiar with it, they don't really need a special card aside from someone's own business card to tell them that whoever they're meeting is a member of CA. However, is it necessary to have a special system in place to identify them? Especially at workshops where it's safe to assume that everyone there is from CA.
Also, in keeping with the devils advocate nature of this post, I might point out that CA exists as an offshoot of MB. Meaning, everything bearing it's name ultimately reflects back to MB. Should the logo be "abused" in some manner, then there's not really much to be done about it, if everyone is allowed to use it. I dunno, just something to think about. I do think it's a cool idea though.

Boy, you missed the whole boat, didn't you, Paul?
TRADING...as in "Hi, Paul, Give me one of your MADs, and here's one of mine...I have a collection of over 200, including Jason Manley, Android, MikeCorriero, Lover, Rook, AND a limited edition one made by Barts out of laminated pubic hair...How many MADs do YOU have now?" The idea is to share, not identify us. That was a joke...DUR. That's why workshops would be the best place to TRADE them, because a large portion of attendees would be members with cards to trade... It's a MEMBER card, Paul, for CA, the Forums, NOT Massive Black the business...Sheesh! ~M Last edited by madster; October 10th, 2005 at 07:15 PM.. |

I kinda vote for the idea of having a lil more structure to these... if you really wanna dork it up, we can create a playing card game like Magic and our gladiator ranks reflect how much power we possess...
Anyhoo, let us know as soon as this gets a green light (though Davi seems to have granted that already ). I'd be willing to have a bunch made, if someone wants to go in on a printing run with me. I'll have my rarest card be a hologram, 3D nekkid-whisp card!!! Only one of its kind wil EVAR be made... and it will include a stick of gum from 1987.

We are all awaiting permission from the Gods on High at Massive Black. Jason will let me know yea or nay, unless he posts something here for everyone.
Since my chances of meeting more than 3 of you in my remaining lifetime are exactly slim to none, I will most probably start a thread for online cards, and post mine there. Anyone wants it for voodoo spells or cyber-stalking will be able to download it and print it at home for their own personal enjoyment... For those rare occasions when I might actually hand someone my CA_MAD, I'll print it at home on good quality home business card stock, 10 to a page. When I talk art with people, I'll give 'em one of my Member cards, and tell 'em to check the site out themself...That's my idea behind them. I'm not trying to make this into our own mini-Hallmark card mfg. company, I just thought it would be fun to hand someone your "business card," but it's not about a business, it's about CA, and being a "fellow member." Kinda like a "secret handshake." If you hand someone your MEMBER Artcard Design, and they look at it, and say, "Wow! I didn't know you were -----! I'm a member of CA, too!", and then hand you their MAD, you've just traded cards, and met a fellow member...nothing complex, nothing big-scale, just a business card that identifies you as a CA member, that you might put some of your art on...I wasn't planning "structured." I was planning motivational for people to make their own MADs to give out to any and everyone, should they choose, or collect in albums, or pin to their work cubicles...it doesn't need to be any more than the basic idea. Each member can then interpret their MAD any way they want... ~M Last edited by madster; October 10th, 2005 at 06:31 PM.. |

Dumbest damn idea I ever heard...
I LOVE IT! Suggest that if it gets a go from Jason...we do at least some standardization... Maybe a business card size, a trading card size and a postcard size. Each size has its own limitations and benefits. We do this in stamp collecting at shows. The host group preps an envelope, a card about 8.5 x 5.5 or so, and sometimes a lable type of thing. These are collected as souvenirs. |

Thank you, Ilaekae!
THAT was the word I couldn't think of...souvenirs... Kitsch they may be, but I know many of us like to have mementos of people we meet, and what better thing than a little business card of art from a fellow member, as a souvenir of an event or a meeting... The trading card size might be hard for some of us using home printers, but postcard stock is available, I know. Event Souvenirs like you were describing would be labor intensive, but cool for things like the Prague Workshops...Those might be able to be sold to profit CA/MB. Regardless of how it grows, simple MACs (if approved) will always remain something that any member can easily make themself for distribution as they want... If approved, I want to have the CA.Org logo as a standard on them, to show they are "official" MEMBER cards. Same with Member name and Join Date, just for "verification" (as if anyone cared...), and beyond that, the sky is the limit...I like the idea of gold foil, holograms, clear plastic, whatever floats your boat to represent you on a 2x3 1/2 inch card... You Da Man! Thanks again! ~M |

a standardized framework would be nice, visually, and umm pick a font that most people have or can download, or they will have issues

LOL - then we could market it! Talk about potential! Okay, I'm being stupid, but I think Madster's card idea is cool, and I think it would be fun to. Cheers, ~S

Actually, Oregano, I love the title!!!!
Concept - The Drawing.... lolol! But, yeah, that's what I mean about trading back and forth. Some members' MACs will be in GREAT demand...like Jason, and Android, and Davi, and Feeb, all the top level admins, and all the Massive Black gang, and the better artists whose art we all view time after time...imagine having one of their MADs! I think it would be fun, without taking up any "resources" at CA, beyond the permission to use the logo/sitename on our cards. They certainly can't be used for nefarious means, if all they say is your username, join date, and ConceptArt.Org, at least I can't think of any... ![]() The Standardized framework is a finished size Business card. Period. I don't care if you frame it, or bleed it to the edge. That's YOUR art cart to decorate as you want. The typeface/Logo is exactly what we are awaiting permission on, rook. Read the posts... ![]() The only thing I think MIGHT be "standardized," would be a minimum (and maybe maximum) size for the ConceptArt.Org on the card, so that it always is a prominent visible part...but even that can be open to interpretation, I guess... ~M Last edited by madster; October 10th, 2005 at 06:41 PM.. |
