I just ran across this guy yesterday, I'd never heard of him before.. his lines and compositions are amazing, check him out:

I had a color painting by Sime, and sold it. It was good, but his earliler stuff, black and white, as you show here, is much better. He was at the peak of his genius when he was illustrating for magazines of the day and for Lord Dunsany. He more or less retired after inheriting a sum of money. He spent his last days in a small village, Worplesdon, in England, where there is still a small museum of his work. He left the work he still owned to the people there. It's not a very well attended, or cared for museum. I was lucky enough to spend an entire day there, reading his handwritten autobiography, going through tons of drawings and sketch books, etc., on a table that once belonged to him. Unbelievable. Any other information about him is mostly available on the web. I have been a Sime fanatic for several years and I'm delighted to see that he's finally gathering a resurgence of his fame. His followers are few, but rabid. His stuff comes up for sale or auction almost never. It's taken me several years to collect a handful of his original art. To me, even so-called "fine artists", much less illustrators, don't come any better than Sidney Sime. I think his work can be favorably compared to any of the great Symbolists (from THAT great movement), or other masters, such as Goya or James Ensor. Check out those artists too, if you don't know them, though perhaps you do, certainly. Hope you find this interesting and helpful.
