Sushi Chef hunting for fish

Hi everybody, i am a highschool student attending SVA this fall and this is my newest illustration. I did it in pencil and painter 9. basically trying to copy (sort of) the style of that famous japanese print of the tidal wave. also going for some sort of zelda-ish kind of style (wind waker). please any critiques on my composition, linework, coloring, ANYTHING, just go crazy. all help appreciated.

High res available upon demand...lol

I really like the stye of this and there is a lot of chraracter in just about everything. The one disappointing element is the actual Chef. He is very boring, both in his character design, as well as his pose. With so much other really neat, fun stuff going on, even the fish outshine him.

I think it would be more interesting compositionally if the boat were moved off to the right. It's looking a bit central now.

Your colours don't have much pop to them now. I think you're just darkening the local colour, and that's not giving you much opportunity for it. Try adding blues into the shadows on the water and deeper ones into the sky as well.

And why's he trying to catch fish with a butcher's cleaver?

That's one brave chef.

I would never go fishing in that storm.

Dude, that's one of the coolest works I've seen. It's hilarious!! And the simple design feels like the ancient Japanese; only wacky. You could build a whole story about a class of painters in Feudal Japan, doing beautiful works, and then the camera pans over to the one oddball, painting this picture with his favorite food subject. The teacher shakes his head and moves on... LOL *quits rambling and sits down*
