First Digital Paintings: Turtle Clean-up and the Faun

Here are my first attempts at painting in photoshop. For the Turtle Clean-up, I had a little sketch of the guy with the stick, scanned that in, and then built the rest of the painting on top of that. The Faun is just Photoshop.

that second pic is gorgeous. loovely coloring, esp on the turtle. has a very watercolor-feel to it!
the guy on the right might need a little work.
the texture on the house/wall behind the man looks a little pasted.

i prefer the turtle piece because of the accents of saturation which spark in the image...the other image is muddy in color and much too dark in areas...not contrasty in value or color in others. get photo ref if u have to.

spend more time rendering out the major focal areas....let other areas fall away.

This turtle is really good.

I think that you have to differentiate more the background than your first planes and foregrounds... In your first drawing the background seems be taking the form of the monster.

I don´t know if i explain correctly that i want to say but i have tried. Hope you understand.

The first pic would be a lot better if you would sharpen and clean the edges. I like the composition of the firstone a lot more than the composition of the second one and I would try to paint over the first with a high opacity brush and clean some edges and sharpen some details.

feedback

Hey thanks guys for your responses. Usually I would get a notice in my email that somebody replied, but nothing like that happened this time around, otherwise i would have responded earlier. I started doing some of these digital paintings, but for some reason, I just feel a hundred times more confident with watercolor, and other traditional media. Zak, Jason, Pic, Hanuka you guys are all totallty right about the contrast and the colors. I was taking a stab at digital here, the goat man (first pic) is my only all digital painting. The turtle came out better and has a more "watercolor" look because I started in watercolor, scanned it then painted over it. As soon as I finish my current project, I'm going to make a bunch more watercolors; even if it is supposedly slower than digital painting, I enjoy the process so much more that it feels like time well spent. I'll keep you guys updated as soon as I get something going.

-Josh
