DAY 4, 5 & 6 (ws day 3,4) and epilogue (long)
ok so day 4 started without phil holland gracing our presence at 10 am in the triton hotel. hopes were high kekai and the gang of misfit artists were all going to go to pearl and kinokinya. well pearl opens at 12 and it was a Sunday so who knows if kino was even open. so we woke up and showered and headed down to the workshop. man it seemed like san fran was home... i knew the streets and took a different path to the workshop hoping to see some kool graf art or some interesting architecture. there was nothing amazing but it did prove the bums have a keen sense of who will give them $$$ and who wont. i had saved my change just for the walk... i am sure they could use it more than i. they were all kind and courteous and all offered to help me where i am going. i must look like a san diegan or something because all of them figured i did not live there.
so upon entering the workshop i saw a crowd... marko wes and rich were sketching it up at the tables again and this time coro and HPX were hanging out as well. now if you have met phillipe you know he is a quite guy with crazy skills. through out the day some insane pictures were made by him and some collab work with rich... i swear since the collab in austin these guys are like brothers both of their styles work perfectly with each other. foster was around tweaking his painting some more... making it look even more fosterish (meaning bad ass in layman terms) and was a real treat to see him go further with it. Ron, mike hussar, vanessa, kevin, and sweet continued on their paintings of sara and misty. they all turned out bad ass. it was very kool to see them all work so differently with the same medium. wes snuck off from his sketch table after the break and did some drawing of the 2 new models we got. i swear they are as good as the other 2 i was stoked about to see day 2 of the workshop. me is so methodical about his life and normal drawings it is kool to see a contrast between the blazing ron lemen. Nox snuck down stairs and did a digital demo and all i can say is WOW he is amazing. he later said it gets to a point where even he does not know what he is doing... i laughed. i ran down the street to get some food and instead of being assaulted by a bum for money i was asked to appraise his comic books? what a bum was doing with comic books was amazing in its own right. he said he got it off some guys who he gave some weed to. they varied from 60's-90's and included fantastic four #27 (jesus if only i had money to ofer the guy) and early joe mad stuff before he signed his name MAD!. by the time i got back nox was putting on the finishing touches kevin was showing his portfolio and explaing how he got started. and that wrapped up the final informative day of the workshop Oh yea ron was doing some bad ass life drawings and a guache demo. if you have not seen his guache sketch book do a search of the forums We left the workshop and headed down to a diner that screwed up Phil hollands order. emilyg, art kitty, Phil and eargie??? (damn i gotta go look up your spelling aline) all walked many city blocks trying to find it. it was interesting. Phil holland tried to play footsy with me and made many lewd comments. then after convincing we all went to the galleria to draw and be merry with every one. there were at least 50 people in the lobby and more upstairs in jp42's room and in the mezzanine level. kekai(prostate sunrise) and everyone were working on their angel thunder domes it was bad ass. -dns day 5 Workshop day... in Austin this day was a crazy day. it emotionally was a bummer cause it was the last day while you were also entusiastic and eager to hurry home to draw and make a name for yourself. well today was a little off. Oblio a true joy to be around was not his usual self and was getting sick and he was stressed with running the show. Oblio is the man everyone. I finally met ****** the 14yr old and she does not stop moving. we even played the hand slap game together (I have not done that since I was 10) ***EDITED FOR A FRIEND*** ... lol. Rook also passed off the hand slap game onto me wanting no part of it, lol. i felt old. Basically I followed ke kai (prostate sunrise) around since i think i would learn a lot by the crits given to him... first up JP Targete man if there was not a kooler guy to give you advice it would be Targete. ke kai wanted the boost of confidence i am sure since I have seen targete in his thread a couple of times and he likes his work. well every thing was given the thumbs up... JP loved his work. Prostate’s portfolio was a little off in color... his printer was on the fritz and they did not do any of his work justice. every one of prostates pieces have been a background of my computer for awhile and it was a shame they were not looking their best. Then Andrew got to view the portfolio and was commenting on the poor quality of the print but when he saw the sketch book he was impressed and said so. So basically everyone likes prostates work… its more of the same. All gave advice how to make it that much better…. But the fun part was the thunder dome. Prostate, flex and Caleb’s pieces took 1st 2nd 3rd and they all won painter an equal prize. Every pro had their difference of opinion on who the real winner was. All 3 were dark pieces on the cusp of being too “demonic” I thought they all looked kool. Kevin llwelyn probably saved prostate’s from being moved down to fourth place by picking it as his favorite. Caleb took first and definitely put the time into his piece. It was a sad moment when I had to say good by to rich, molly, rook, byan, cartoonfox,, coro, prostate sunrise, and the rest of the guys as I headed home and up to my room to sleep. It was only 10 but these 4 days of the workshop and 5 of san fran took their toll on me. I couldn’t even get up at mid night to go to the galleria to say my good byes and sketch there. -dns Day 6 So today is just a continuation of yesterday… the workshop is over and its today I go home. Concept art wrist band has not come off my wrist since I put it on 4 days ago. So maus who rented the room was leaving at 6am to catch the bart to SFO so I was waking up every hour naturally when the noises of him being up woke me up. So at 530 when he left I was awake… I knew he was paying and leaving meaning I had to get out… well 5 am was not my idea of a good time to explore the city so I decided to break the rules. I got showered and packed my bags and was 100% ready to go and then went to sleep till 8. I thought that would be a good time and there was no way they were going to send the maid up before that time. Sleep was good and I enjoyed it. At 805 I was already up doing a final sketch in san fran and there is a knocking at my door… uh oh… lol… I grabbed my bags and opened the door to find the maid.“you checked out!” she exclaimed “yes we did and I got my bags in hand , see?” I replied “no more people in room?” “no should I check?” I replied as I opened the door “anyone in there? Nope, no one is left” “you check out right?” “yea maus (pronounced mouse) went down there and handled everything… just had to pick up the last of it” “Ok. Ok. you have good day time to clean room.” I swear that lady was so shocked she had someone answer the door for her. Lol. So I bailed and walked past the galleria one last time. It was empty and lonely in the lobby. And I went to the bart station and started my journey home. -dns Epilogue so there you go. That is the san fran workshop from my view point, I trimmed some things to make phil seem less gay, so the rain was not an issue like the heat in Austin, so it showed all the things I will think about when I remember this weekend. Jason and Andrew thank you for doing this. I hope you consider this a success. I personally believe everyone had a good time and it is now a cherished memory of mine. There is nothing like it and to bring that many people together with a common interest is awesome. Austin was my favorite because this was more streamlined and less hectic (both good things!) but it was the first of its kind. It has more of a soft spot in my heart, but san fran was amazing in so many other ways. Thanks you guys and I look forward to actually attending the next euro workshop. These posts were all written out this morning but I could not post them so here you go now. -dns ![]()

Ah, I miss you guys all so much! It was so much fun hanging out--I wish I could have met even more people.
Hehe Otto, that one night we spent so much time trying to avoid going to a diner. Then we spent time trying to order in because we didn't want to walk. In the end, we had to go to a diner AND walk really far because everything else was closed. That was a long night--I'm glad we caught a ride back. I'm sitting here at home and thinking of all of you! emily |
