Five large illustrations from a n00b

Hey guys, I haven't posted here in a while . . . actually it's been long enough that my old account got deleted. Some of you might know me from other boards though. I do lighting for CG movies by day, but I like to do some freelance illustration in my free time. These were done for a theme park development company. The vertically-oriented pieces were used as back-lit box office posters about 40" high, and the horizontal piece is being printed on canvas as a 34-foot-wide stage backdrop. If they aren't deemed concepty enough I'll take no offense to having them pulled.

Character sketched by Jose Saenz, electronic paint by me.

Character sketched by Jose Saenz, e-paint by me

Same credits as the others. Click HERE for a detail section.

Same deal. Jose comes up with some fun shapes for me to paint.

Owl sketched by J, rest by me. Click HERE for a big version.

I found it tough to work on a mostly-black background without ending up with the proverbial "velvet Elvis", but it's what the client wanted, and they seemed quite happy with what I gave them. I'm probably most proud of the Hook piece. I cheated the lighting quite a bit in order to amplify the "magical" mood the client was after. These were all 6-12 hour pieces.

Thanks for looking.

Hey thanks guys. Yeah, these are strictly 2D, done in Corel Photo-Paint 10 (I'm weird like that). I used some reference for the moon, so that it would look like the moon and not just a moon.

My experience in 3D definitely helps me figure out how to cast shadows and handle different surfaces when I do 2D stuff. The two disciplines play off each other quite a bit for me.

Thanks again.

Thumbs up

Wow, these are great.

The only thing I wish was that the first one had more contrast on the figure. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on. Maybe it's just my monitor though..

Anyhow - good work!

Hey man, I figured I'd seen you around here before. Your work seems to fit right in =P

Very awesome lighting on everything. Very moody, lot of contrast to draw the eye. A lot of "pop" in everything. No muddiness at all, which is good. That would've killed these pieces.

Looking forward to more!

good to see you again mr b.

is good to see your stuff for sure. You are growing a lot in your work. You have some nice juicy brushwork and an eye for clean mark making.

Cheers,

Jason

Really some great stuff here. You ought to really get back into these forums! I'd love to see some more of your stuff. I'm kind of a newcomer here so I don't quite know anything about your work. Also; If you don't mind, and if you do that's fine, what was the payrate charged for this client?

Peace.

I wouldn't be comfortable giving an exact number, but I'll tell you that I made close to market rate on them. A lot of my previous illustration stuff was done for (relative) peanuts, and the work suffered for it . . . I find that when I charge more, I deliver more, and I think that's ultimately better for my development than doing a lot of cheap jobs.

These guys were good clients. I hope they have more work for me in the future.
