Animal Characters

Hello everyone,

I've never been too sure if I'm good enough to post here, buuut... here goes nothing. These are four animal characters I painted after I got inspired by the works of an artist friend of mine. I took forever with them because of the constant tweaking I did, but I hope it payed off in some way. My goal was to make them portfolio material.
So here they are.

Comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.
And thanks for looking

Hey Windmaker. I really like these, I think the detailing does pay off. The first pose is by far the most successful as it's more dynamic and interesting in the shape you have it making. I find the deer creature's neck a little awkward (and maybe too long in the 3rd image). It may sound daft, but even with bestial humanoids it looks disjointed if the anatomy isn't believable - as it does with drawings of humans.

They certainly don't look out of place on this forum though, be great to see some coloured work soon? Look forward to future posts.

The characters are good but some of their anatomy isn't working for me. On some it looks like you just combined an animal part with a human body and there is not much blending between the two. In all, these are much better than most human/animal hybrid drawings.

If you still want to tweak some more, I would suggest working on the drapery more. The folds and wrinkles in some of the cloth areas look a bit unresolved. Not all of them, just in some areas. I would get some reference of clothing draping in ways similar to that in your poses. All the other details and the overall concepts are great.

Thanks for all the positive replies, everyone I'm really glad that the characters are generally well liked.

thegrayslayer I guess you're right about the anatomy problems. Drawing issues and anatomy are still my biggest problem, I believe. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to not make similar mistakes in the future And about the pose... Now I also feel the poses of the fox, bear and stag (or deer... or whatever you call it) look quite static and uninteresting by comparison. Too bad I didn't feel the same way while I was drawing them.

NightWatcher Thanks! Glad you like the work I hope I will be posting more often now.

Kaztx Thank you too! Bad thing about the first picture being liked the most is that it was the first one I drew and painted. I'll just have to try harder to repeat the success, I guess.

kostadinas Kosta? From Gameloft? Nice to see you here Glad you like the works! I hope to see some of your recent works someday soon

illustratorwayne Thank you! Glad you think I succeeded in the design part of the characters

CircusRobot Glad you like 'em. And about the anatomy... As I already mentioned, I guess that's still amongst my main problems. Working on it though! Also, I'm happy that you think they're better than most pictures of the sort. All the time while drawing them I was thinking: "I'm making furries?! What the hell... ?"

Ebony-chan Thanks! Only thing bad about the details is that now I don't think I've managed to integrate them well enough with the rest of the picture in some places... Next time I'll do better

riceface Thank you too Glad I'm getting good with values. Now if I only started working with colour too...

Victor S. Glad you like it! Thanks for looking!

rolandb Thank you for the comment! Yeah... drapery is among the things I need to work on more. Will try to do better next time! I'm glad you also think the designs are successful!

Enemy_Within Should've written it anyway It would've increased the chance of me actually getting it in my head that I need to work more on drapery. Glad you like the characters!

Elwell Thanks for the comment! I'm really glad I got one of the people that inspire me, to love one of my paintings Woo-hoo! I hope I can repeat the success soon!
Aaaand... Am I right in assuming that what makes the first one so successful is the more dynamic pose? Or are there other serious problems with the rest of the paintings that make them less... loveable?
