Nathan's Finished Pieces(1 new 12/2)
Hi everyone, just joined a week ago and have been hanging around the wip forums. I'm a Senior art student about to graduate and I mainly joined to get help with my speed painting and conceptual skills but I thought I would post some of my finished work here. I started a thread in the wip section for my speed paintings as well and I'd appreciate any feedback on how to get faster/better.
I'd also like to add a big thanks for all the hard work that goes into this site! It really is amazing! The first three are digital, the last two are traditional media. Last edited by CircusRobot; December 2nd, 2009 at 02:55 AM.. |

That's pretty cool stuff you got there. I love the one with the big troll sitting in the swamp. You really captured a whimsical mood with that one. I think you should persue that vein.
Question? Whats up with the "speed painting" thing. I mean other than meeting unrealistic dead lines for schmuck head clients, Why paint fast? I don't know, but after 30 plus years of "meeting deadlines" I don't want to do anything fast anymore. I like to savor every moment of the creative process, without some pencil necked geek breathing down my neck and constantly calling me with, " IS IT DONE YET, IS IT DONE YET?" LOL!!! |

that last one is pretty well done. you should definitely post up some more of those kind of studies.
crub - other than some thumbnails and what not, speed paintings don't really have anything to do with clients. they're generally studies or paintings done as fast as possible to avoid needless detailing and rendering. personally, i most often use them for trying to figure out color and lighting in environments. or, you know, to get out the occasional barbarian slaying a frost giant that i'd be embarrassed to actually spend real time on ;P |

Sourgasm, thanks for posting twice! : ) As far as the speed painting goes, the intent is to speed up my work in general and also a way for me to get ideas out without spending a couple weeks on one picture. After a thirty year career I might be able to slow down but right now with graduation looming I'm going to listen to the various art directors I've talked to ; )

woooowwwwww I love all of them except the second one. Its well rendered like all the others, but the drawing of those kids in the pool, even of caricature, seem amateurish.
The last two are traditional right? so good! |

Zwarrior, thanks for the feedback. Characters are definitely not my stength and so I should probably avoid posting a character driven image until I improve in that area. As for the link, it used to work...not sure what happened.
Here's a new image I did that took me about five hours. I'm still new at speed painting but I've seen a big improvement since I started. My biggest problem is making the image read right without spending that extra hour or so. CC please! |
