Hey, sure you know of me by now. Currently a junior, working hard on my skills to get a nice potrfolio ready for when I apply to ringling next year.

Here's a few sketches to show you my start.

First, a project from photo reference,

A sketch from reference,

A still life drawing,

and finally, a sketch from imagination,

I'll keep checkin back here to see everyone's work and post my progress from time to time.

Love your cartoons hett, very creative.

I checked out your portfolio Sula, I really like your still life studies. Especially the eggs and wine bottle one-- very nice looking. I really gotta experiment with white on toned paper sometime.

razuel that is some great work. I also like the tone of them. Especially the first and second one. Just so you know when you put together your portflio only include a few pieces from reference like that. A good piece would be a larger collage of lots of people from reference (like the first on you made, but include tons more people) Draw people you see everyday and turn them into something. Were you going to try for illustration or CA?

My opinoin is that I think its the shadows on the surface of whatever it is on that makes this look "unfinished". Also the contrast is hard to see, but that could be from the scan. Darken it up and remove the shadows, and define what the headphones are sitting on. Is it a table, the floor, a chair? The headphones by themself looks great though.

I got in to ringling. its really not that hard to get in to i don't think. But you just have to draw from life.

Did anyone look at the pictures of ringling. The beach and stuff looks gorgeous. I can't wait to go there. I still haven't gotten my fafsa ready yet. Good f**k!!! I am gonna get no money.

Lightbulb

All right. Check this out. I am currently attending college part-time to get some credits under my belt while I work a full-time Data Entry job. It pays pretty well and I like the people I work with. I just want something more meaningful for a career! I love art, so why not, right? Problem is, I want to get into a college for art, but don't yet have a solid grasp on my skills nor have I unlocked the massive vault of inspiration I've been bottling up all these years.

I live in Tampa Bay and semi-frequently visit the Sarasota area in search of a limited release art film at the Burns Court Cinema and a day at the beaches off of St Arman's. I partially grew-up in Sarasota (a few years of elementary school) so I have fond feelings for the area. The familiar aromas in the air of the blossoming trees brings back a flood of childhood memories. It's nice to go back to those.

Anyway, I'm off to a running start. I have been thinking about trying to get into art school, but wondered if anyone had an example of what a portfolio should look like. I've read the description provided to include only your best work, but what kind of stuff could that be? My best works could be the most horrid botchulant bile when compared to the works of what someone puts in their portfolio to get into school there. Being an aspiring artist, I need more of a visual approach than a textual when describing the perfect portfolio for entrance into the school or applying for a post-education job.

Hett15: I really dig your description in another thread of how you got started toward your education at Ringling. I admire your dedication and feel as though I have the same internal drive to push me to the goals I wish to achieve in getting an education and instruction at an art school of such excellent credentials and national praise.

Any tricks for getting scholarships would also be a welcomed breath of fresh air for me. I am a few years off, by any rate because of debts that require monthly payments (see: car, loan, visa). Once those things are done with, I can breathe cleaner air. My woman-to-be is finishing her Bachelors and everyone is encouraging her to go on to get her Masters and really do something awesome with her degrees. Once she has a high(enough)-paying job and we are debt free, I can pursue my schooling. I just hope we don't break-down and have kids before going that route. We are both 25 and really want kids but, we don't know when/where to raise them.

Anyway, I am taking a drawing class at The Arts Center in St Pete (just 15-20 mins from where I work in Clearwater). It's pretty cool so far as I am learning a little about image composition just from the first class. I have a class every wednesday from 7-9:45pm. I like my instructor (Steve Beverage - he also instructs a class at Ringling part-time). I'm going to pick his brain more with every visit to find out more about the college and what it takes to get in. Hopefully I can gain at least a running-start toward my dreams of going to school and being an artist.

Anyway, I hope to see you guys around!

Nice use of color. It's very bright and happy. I especially like the last one you did with the face-mix-coloring. Very nice.

Time to revive this bad boy.

Nice color stuff jeju The still lives look awesome as always.
Sojo- I like your coloring jobs too I need to get myself Painter and a Wacom or something.

Here's a few things I've been working on. Finals are finally over! Now I actually have time to draw stuff

The first one was inspired by the book Black Hawk Down. Really good read, pick it up. The second is in honor of the upcoming Star Wars movie It's not finished though...not even close. So...that's a progress shot. Oh yeah...both are referenced from photos.

Keep on posting guys!

website is up

just letting those who are curious, my crap website is up. until i get dreamweaver or golive, it won't change. hoping to alleviate that situation asap.

anywho, should find out for sure about my acceptance by friday. grades are released tomorrow for spring semester which are sure to suck... if only i could erase this past year, i'd have no prob getting in.... 3.91 as opposed to the 2.3 that will probably be. *crosses fingers*.

most of my stuff is old, i think the recent stuff is apparent. im all about the sketches.

peace.

i think most of you should do more life/observation work. if you go to a portfolio day, i've been in line and they can weed out works that were based on photo refs like none other, they lectured some ppl about it. In addition, they mentioned being more original and not doing so much fanwork (star wars, anime, etc.) even if it's really good. They accepted me into their 3d comp prog, so perhaps that is graded differently (although I'm not going). Luck to ya all!

My portfolio was 95% observation and I got into the CA program. I think the guys from the Ringling thread know this pretty well by now since I've drilled it into their minds from day one . I also mentioned ad nauseum that anime and stuff was the devil too. But yeah...to those who are still waiting on a response, best of luck to ya

edit: hehe thanks kendraad...the scanner messed it up quite a bit, the blue and white look much more intense in real life

Hey there, all...very cool sketches! I'll post some of mine soon.

My name is Jennifer, I'm 26, and a 2nd year Illustrator at RSAD. I transferred from MCC (aka the "pit of despair") and LOVE it here! As long as you are willing to work your butt off (which shouldn't be hard if you love art) you will do just fine. If you guys get a chance, pop in to Career Services in the Fall and give me a highdeho!

Also, to those "hopefuls" - first year can be kinda rough, what with all of the Core classes that can be mind-numbing, but think of it as a trial run for senior year! =P

razuel-that is some sick graphite work. nice one.
Cat-awesome stuff, goes without saying
jeju-nice still life although that self portrait kinda makes you look really thin
rob-nice to see you round these parts heh. I'm liking the concepts. Good stuff.

These are looking great as usual guys. Sorry I haven't posted anything in a long time. My scanner is in storage and between my wife,my dog, my job, packing and moving, and paying the bills on time I am finding it hard to scan anything let alone draw anything. (I can't wait to be unemployed!)

Sula, Rob, Jeju, Cat, Razuel
It looks like ALL of you are improving a lot from the first drawings I have seen of yours. Hopefully I can get something together in July after the big move.

I love the turtle drawing Sula! Lol, at first I thought he was saying "GOOL!"

Here's something a drew recently but never finished. It is an opera costume. No opera in particualar, I just wanted to design something that looked like it could get away in an opera type setting. I've been so busy with work that I've hardly had any time to draw I can't wait till fall comes around!

dadamafia- dude, lenseflares are teh devil! didn't anybody tell you that? anyway, try harder to show light source through your rendering of forms, rather than a few big lense flares, better results a-go-go.

pixeldragoon- that digital sketch up there could be taken way further, at least finish it before you post it as one of your "betters". I mean, I can't possibly take that much more effort just to finish coloring it, right? like, five minutes tops!

ah, what he hell- I finished these two recently.

I don't know that I've met anyone here, - i'm going into my sophomore year of Iluustration at ringling. um, nothing else interesting to say beyond that.

and wow, cat draws stuffs other than cats. hahah. lovely sketchwork. reminds me of my friends, really clean and colorful. shes aiming for animation as well, funny that.

kendraad, that girls got small hands. otherwise i like it, lovely job.

I would be comign here more often, but me comp loves to die when i look at sketchbooks. shame. it cant take lots of pics at once. im told more ram works..but thats damn spendy. eventually.

ill drop off something here anyways.

ha, this is a scribble mess. but i like it. cept for the lower right firgure, horrid posing on my part.
