In light of what you said, Loop, I performed the following experiment to see just how I could define form with solely crosshatching.
Before you do even that, if you can't cross hatch well, just do some practice hatches on the opposite page of your sketchbook page to get it down. I do that all of the time, just to loosen up my hand before I draw. Try not to the 'waves' as I call them, where the lines connect.
But the crosshatching you have in post 29 is very nice and stylistic in the way you handled it, even if you didn't really mean to do it that way.
Nice experiment very stylistic... as to what drd said... before I start drawing i normally fill a page with straight lines.... i try to go all the way across the page up and down and see how close you can get them without touching... as a warm up... sooner than you know you will be able to draw straight lines like nobody's business....

Thanks for the comment in my sb. As far as rendering goes, its just a fancy word for shading, and texturing your object to make it look real. The recent stuff looks good, and with your hatching, get the lines closer together. Try and find some examples on here, because there are some great ones.
It all looks good to me. I like to see your lineart in the first page and be surprised the moment after with some coloured images. I have to say that the faerie and [Raining] are by far my favourite pieces. Keep up the good work, you're on the right track and you're doing a lot of varied drawings. Keep it up!
The one with the girl and boy together is really getting better The hatching in the first drawing of your last post looks good, you should reconsider using hatching in the drawing of your (?) hand. That should make it really pop out....and yeah I love the Dugtrio you drew. It was totally unexpected and that made it so funny.
@Lostlimeturtle: Thanks! Yeah, the dugtrio is actually a little figure that I found in the dirt (ironically enough) a few years ago. He hangs out on the shelf above my monitor. Also, I took your suggestion on the sketch of my hand, although I'm thinking the crosshatching didn't work as well with the lighter-valued parts. :X
@ skorpi: I like it too, but I don't like the rest of the plan. I was going to have him pulling up a train, rescuing it from falling off a cliff, and it's so heavy that his arms are ripping, but that idea seems somewhere between cliche and gross. I might do something else with it, though.
I was experimenting a lot in the eye picture below. I like how the skin texture turned out, but it makes the eye seem very cartoony. Not sure how to balance those. Any tips?
Hello; great to see that revised couple up! I'm going to help you with your eye now... The only thing I first noticed was lack of an eyelid! And the lashes seemed to be coming from under the eyelid. Here, I've posted my revision of your eye; hope you don't mind me doing this, and I'm not claiming it as my own either...
The eyelid, despite being a thin layer of skin and muscle, is also 3D, and the eyelashes sprout around it, not from under it. Here I've emphasised it's 3D-ness and drew the eyelashes again. They may be slightly exagerrated, but I hope you get the point. I've also included a fold of skin above the eye so it sits neatly in place now. To make it all complete, you could de-saturate the colours of the eye, and include some tiny blood vessels at the side of the white of the eye....

I'm glad you took my suggestion. It's almost done. I think it needs just a little more work. For example the change from dark to lighter hatching is missing. It would look a lot better if you did that a bit more. The portrait of the man with the hat looks so good because there are good gradients. Anyway, Euphemism did give you some great advice on the eye part. I have nothing to that. What I will say is that your ballerina looks like it was drawn in 5 minutes. Which is a good thing. I like the pose. It's a humble yet dynamic pose. That is just great

If it is, i'd stick to this style more and less of the digital paintings

@ Lostlimeturtle: You're right. I can crosshatch well when I'm relaxed about the picture, which I tend not to be when I'm doing studies. Must work on that. And the ballerina was done very quickly.

I've been hit by a massive lazy wave these last few weeks, though I'm forcing myself to work through them. But my art keep seeming... blah... to me. Whatever. I'll keep going.

You've improved a great deal since i last looked, the digital work is really coming along. On a lot of them though the shadows are still very flat, have a go at introducing some other colours to them, opposites on the colour wheel are always a good place to start or the colour of your background.
is something is an orange/flesh tone try adding a bit of blue or purple. If its red add green. If that doesnt make sense have added a new Lucifer picture to my sketchbook and used purple shadows in that

That's a really nice sketchbook! You're work has it's own style, and I love the moodiness and understatement of your subjects. You get the point and feeing across without smacking viewers upside the head. That's really nice.
I have to say, I think you should stick with traditional media over digital... if you don't mind. Not because your digital work is bad or anything, it's just losing the sensitivity and character that your sketches and painted work have. You have a wonderfully unique mark that isn't yet making the transition to digital. (Though I'm sure it will with practice) I just love seeing the warmth of your watercolor and ink. It has more soul in my opinion.
Okay! I haven't update here in ages.
My scanner's broken right now, but here is a doodle I'm working on. I think it's about done. I'm working on bringing more soul to my digital pieces, as was pointed out by the last comment on here. Obviously I've grown a lot since my last post. Tips are always welcome. I think I'm going to go work on some anatomy sketches now, because I can tell in painting this I'm not 100% on the shading, especially on the neck and torso. Weeee practice!
Also working on bringing more punchy color to my digital work, because I find I tend toward not enough contrast on them. :/
Just one for today. I will continue on this one some more tomorrow. I'm definitely learning from these studies. I'm pretty proud of this one so far; I did this in about 30 min. Also, this time instead of working on a transparent layer, I am working on a white-based layer and then eyedropping particular values I want. I think that makes it a lot easier to match values and gets the picture looking smoother. Weird how you learn a process in drawing, and then it seems that as you grow you have to go back to the earlier process. Do you know what I mean? Whatever, it's time for tea and Orson Scott Card.
The latest digital painting isn't bad, but that fairy could use some color adjustments.
