I would love to get critique on this shading - especially the light and shadow work.
Should I put colored light in?
This is ok, but the background is awful and we should be able to see the foxes other leg/hand? the lighting's ok as well but i dont think it makes a lot of sense if you really evaluate it closely.
some progression shots would help, are you underlaying paint under line, or starting in simple form and complicating from there? for this i think it would be good to start with block forms, treating them as bald creatures then adding fur after you get the forms spot-on.
can you give an explanation why the background is no good?
Is that better?
I don't like it like that because I have no contrast with the fur anymore ;/ are you sure?
I think the reason the background doesn't work is because it's too disconnected from the characters. I can understand why you might want a simple background, but right now they both seem to be floating. Maybe some kind of floor would help? Even just a cast shadow, which might also help communicate the lighting a bit more.
All of the elements are disconnected, like you did them seperately and pasted them together. For example, the foxes hand doesnt seem to be interacting with the wolfs body properly.
I agree with dog-faced. You seem to have gone into rendering the fur too soon, it might have helped to start with simple forms and getting a clearer idea of how the light affects it.
That being said, I like the way you're going with it. Great characters
Lhune, that's beyond hilarious! xD
I dont really think there was anything wrong with the background in the first place. If you put a decent cast shadow in there, we will see where the characters are.
Although, you seem to have put a lot of work into making that texture, Maybe even more work/time than it would have taken to create a minimalistic forest-y backdrop?
Anyways, I think if this was an illustration in a children's book, which it could, the background might as well be all white.
Details: Wolf has blue stuff in the collar area. and other places. Weird. Also he has no fur on left rear leg.
Have a nice. Sneak.
