In the middle of this portfolio project, I can get lost and confused and I would like criticism along the way. I know my weaknesses but do I know which I should work most with? I know what I'm great at but do I know how to show it?
I'm applying for the Bachelor degree of Computer Graphics arts in the Animation Workshop in Viborg. The recommended portfolio contents are
Let me post the life drawing I have for now. Last I got critique it was recommended to me to have long studies in addition to the croquis, so I've taken a classic drawing course (it was amazing!). Another teacher recommended us to also sketch people on the street and in the mall, as they have natural poses - unlike a model.Character designs (min. 8 different characters):
These drawings must show characters of your own original design. We would like to see a range of variety in styles; graphic as well as 3-dimensional drawings. They ought to vary in personality as well. The drawings should be done in colour.
Background drawings (min. 3 indoor and 3 outdoor):
These drawings can range from concept sketches to finished background layouts, representing a location where a scene of action/acting could take place. Consideration of the situation which will/could take place is recommended. The drawings should be done in colour.
Storytelling (min. 5 panels/drawings):
Make a sequence of drawings that visually tells a story or a sequence of events. Consider staging, camera angle and posing of the character to tell the story.
Life drawings (min. 8 drawings):
The drawings should show proper anatomy, size proportions, understanding of shape, body dynamics and weight of the figure.
Perspective (min. 4 drawings):
Drawings of buildings, landscapes and/or objects, demonstrating an understanding of perspective.
Freestyle (min. 8 drawings):
Submit some of your best, most interesting and imaginative drawings, showing us your favourite drawing style/styles
Letter of Intention:
Please write a brief description about why you would like to study Computer Graphic Art: What are your influences and inspirations? What are your ambitions for the future work? What are your favourite stories, films and/or games and why? List any related work or educations you have been involved in.
If you have done some relevant work, please submit a show reel on a DVD, CD, flash stick or website – however, please double check that they work! If your work is not viewable, we will disregard this part of your portfolio.
I don't know if I've picked the right studies for this, I have tons to choose from though. I'm trying to pick ones my teacher didn't draw much on.
I love drawing hands, almost tempted to make a collage of a few hand studies.

Yes, that's more than 8. I heard it's bad to only put the minimum requirements in, and I figure, I have a nice folder with room for 48 pages, and I'll use them all - but arrange it so people can just stop reading if it gets too TL;DR.
Trying different degrees of "explanation" for each. They are not really layouted yet. In fact everything is WIP.

the composition is a bit static so idunno, should repaint the whole thing. It was a big step up for me when I painted this, but now I know more about composition, so ... meh.

last year's version for comparison, I think I gave it more oomph now, even if it's not finished at all. (Deadline march 15th!)

since they'rein the same universe as #2, I figure it might be better to render them in similar styles :s

so in this one I'm trying to do some research, on hairdos, mice, silhouettes... should do outfits as well. This is the rough layout, but with more material for no repeats.
5; the mage
think I'll fix it up a bit and add some more sketches of him since I have them. I don't think this shows personality as much as the others do.
6; Scheherazade, disturbing catgirl
to do: better poses, improve rig if possible, render dress, render back/front shot.
7; Spring girl
Just having something from the genre of every day life!
8; looking for trouble
this is the character(s), but not the drawing I want of them. In fact, I'd like to redesign them a lot to be more animation friendly.
I'd like to have more characters, 10 in all (save for misc character stuff that will happen in Freestyle)... I have enough characters of my own but I'd like to design something not in my usual thing... what I've written down is; bird character, old people, kids, stocky person.

I've noticed my assorted quirky sketches probably have more "funny/appealing" characters than my actual characters. So I'm trying to remember to sketch a lot of random stuff and see where it goes. I've been recommended to draw caricatures as well.

Paired pages are opposing. Page numbers are INCORRECT, only file name # is correct. Pages that are cruddy, scribbled all over or missing titles are probably not done. I have to finish most of them, but I can afford to throw some of them out and still keep the required categories covered by having images be in 2 categories (background+perspective is a fine example). 1 week to go.

Thank you Sushy. It's called the Animation Workshop in Viborg, Denmark. The thing is they sometimes decide to look for very specific things in the applicants, and you can't really know what that is. So atm I feel I can never be sure.
Overtoom; thanks! Well I've taken a drawing course, which has steered me towards this strokey thing, oddly... it's like, it's no longer lineart and colour fill, neither painting, but some thing that both paints and draws. Idunno.
I really need to figure out where to put that birdy then!!

My strategy is to show the depth to my ideas, I know very well that there are people out there who render and detail much better than me. However I do believe I have good strengths in design and composition, so it's a matter of showing them.

Ok, status... paperwork to do. Finish 2 perspectives and a background, dropping character #9 I think. Lots of freestyle to layout and sort still. 45 hours to go.
touched this up the other day, better textures (still unfinished), new poses
and perspective, so, technically done with that category now buttt I feel a lot like improving something on another page.
Nice work! I like the quick figure studies and the face/portrait studies. With the figure drawings I might suggest spending a bit more time with the proportions before moving in to the more finished linework.
Looking through all these images I suddenly feel so inadequate about my own portfolio (I'm applying for Character Animation and I did do the admission test and interview, but compared to you... ugh...) But it's also very motivating! I really like your work, there's some beautiful stuff in there. The backgrounds are particularly good! Good luck with your application.
