Angry McLean's Sketchery*(NEW WOTC illo added!)

GO TO LAST PAGE for RECENT WORK.

UPDATE: Most of the images are back now, no more little x's. Only thing is that they are not exactly in chronological order, and you might see a drawing posted twice or something, still working on smoothing it all out. Hopefully you can enjoy it anyway, and give some meaningful feedback!

Hey guys, I'm new to this, but I've heard lots of good things about everyone here on CA, so Imma give it a run. I'd love to hear honest criticism (because getting compliments is never as interesting in hearing how you can improve). The last image here is the oldest, and probably the weakest, but some feedback is better than no feedback.

This stuff looks so much more badass in real life... I'm glad you've started posting.

Can't wait to see more...

That's one crazy cow, man!

Nice work here McLean. I dig the colored paper, w/ highlights approach. That first beast was sweet. I was floored when I got to the Statue bust. A real leap for ya.

The only critical feedback I might offer (since you so politely requested them) is that I see a difference in detail and technique when you go from working from a model/reference to something out of your imagination (Climbing guy & Sword shoulderman). This is only natural, but I would love to see ya try to bring that solid shaping of form and light/shadow to your imaginated humans (the monsters seem good in this area).

For example, if you had the same face from the bearded bust guy on the character beneath him with the shoulder knives, the made up character would seem much more believable and fleshed out. Just a small nit-pick.

Great work, and I look forward to seeing what you do next!

Cheers!~~~JadeDragon

Beautiful sketches. The one of the horse and rider statues is phenomenal. Really excellent stuff, post some more.

more sketches, hopefully interesting, but more likely average.

sorry about this, my scanner was being a bitch, so I had to do a quick (and bad) photoshop montage. i figure since its not a finshed work, it'd be alright.

Ok, here be the new things. I'm sorta struggling with making effective use of sketchbook pages, but then again I don't just want to throw as much crap on a page as possible for no good reason- gah, anyway, hope these are appreciatd, and constructive feedback is always, always welcome.

McLean, these are amazing. You have so much natural ability with your drawing, I am beyond jealous. Really great shadows, the contrast is immense. Amazing.

mclean, these are all really really awesome drawings. your understanding of light and shadow through shading is very apparant here. although, going from start to finish of your posts, i think you should go back to the toned paper haha, it was doin SO MUCH for your sketchbook pages that switching to the white didnt have as much of an impact. your gestures from life are really nice, your portraits are looking good although they're a little intense, but hey, maybe thats what you were going for. i really like your drawings from the sculptures too, the bust and the chariot. they're really nice. you're getting lots of depth with your work and the shading is not a single step behind. oh and i think my favorite is the nightmare guy with the hood and teepee body. that was really great to see it all broken down like that and the highlights looked great on it. i agree that the photoshop painting may have been a little quick to post, the background is taking away from the figure so much that its just not fair to the guy. those straight marks from the photoshop/painter brushes just arent doin it. otherwise, awesome stuff, glad i stopped in

cburt- yeah, i'm not sure exactly why, but a lot of my friends especially like the hooded teepee dude.Thats fine with me though. Here's an image with that nasty background more or less eliminated. I wimped out on the hair, really because I'd rather invest time in something new than this, it already feels stale.

Scratch N' Brain- thanks- kind words always appreciated. In regard to the toned paper sketchbook, its at my school store here in Sarasota Florida. I've never been able to find it anywhere besides here, but be on the lookout and you could stumble upon some.

bumped up contrast, less-nasty background.

to make a last-minute portfolio, i photoshopped a bunch of self portraits together. I know half of these are already on here, and the next time I update, it will be ALL new stuff, I promise.

The shorter the hair, the younger I am. These range from ages 17-19.

EDIT: This was crap, took it away.

Hey, man! First time checking out your sketchbook and it left me pretty dumbfounded. Awesome work man... I wish I had some critiques for you, but I only see brilliance, haha.

Gonna subscribe, keep updating, I love your style and sketches, really awesome book, man.

Ok, this design might look familiar. I decided I just didn't like the head at all, and that it would work better if I just lopped the whole thing off.

Its just a value painting, because I'm not so sure that equipped to handle color really well. I might do some more value paintings just to get comfortable with the program.

EDIT: Craptastic=deletion. No mor 4 u.
