some trippy shit throughout ur SB man , keep updating ...
finally got back to messing around with that flying centaur fighting that beasty comp.... much was off with it.... anatomy...composition.... ugh.
but I think i got it rockin now. Hence onwards to getting the linework spiced up/fleshing out the details and the like. Ive learned for me at least, that unless I really get my gameplan totally mapped out in the initial phases, that ill doom myself to endless rendering and re-rendering with the constant addition and subtraction of elements. So FIX it in the easy line phase and then just knock it out with the render.
vibhas_virwani: hope you enjoyed the trip.
Nice sketchbook man, this last sketch is looking cool, anatomy is convincing and there is great movement. I love the fact that you brought your tablet and laptop to life drawing! I recently started doing the same thing and it's so much fun. Keep it up dude!!
working stuff out in the drawing will totally save your life. i took a class recently where we had to work out our composition using only line work, and work through multiple revisions. takes a fair amount of work up front, but pays off over and over again in hours/days/weeks saved re-rendering.
face on that guy looks awesome. for the horse portion of the body, try youtubing videos of horses toppling. it'll be a real bitch to work out the knobby-leggedness that is the horse leg anatomy without a lot of good ref in motion. plus, you know, things falling down is fun to watch ;p
i like the other guy too. he looks like a flying shark guy, which i'm totally down with.
Fantastic sketchbook. Love the creatures!
Doing a lil Draper Hebert James study, so far im 1 hr in.... again I cant stress how much of a difference it makes when you size these things super small. Makes getting the shapes and basic colors soooo much faster and easier. Remember if it works small, it will work big but the opposite isnt always true.
and then heres a lil quickie i did with the Chiustream, started late but I still got the attention of the Bobby that is know as the Chiu. the topic was insane turtle man.... fun to push for the quick concepts, great excercise.
ikuru: thanks brah.
Esteemed Butkus: many thanks!
Sourgasm: word to the horse portion of the guys body, im still messing around with it and Im definately going to go back to the ref. board. good lookin out.
Jasper: yup yup, digital life drawing is the shiiiiiiiiiiiieet.

I honestly do not know what PS means or WIP.
I know there are a lot of digital artist here. However I want to know your process in producing your work....What did you have to learn? I know you practiced a lot..but what information built your foundation skills?
I have a wacom new and really really nice. I have only had it for a couple of weeks. Love that I can sketch like crazy, but now I am wondering about expanding its use. like today.
When your finished with a digital work what paper do you print it on?
lil Lord Frederick Leighton study, bout an hour,
I realized something today.... for trying to improve my color abilities its best to a: paint from life or really good photography say from National Geographic or some other source that doesnt overly tweak the photos....
For composition and perhaps pallets then Master studies are great.
I make that distinction only because I was thinking that alot of these Renaissance painters really didnt have that many color choices available to them and or the blues/purple range was really expensive so they used those colors very sparingly.... thus many limited color pallets...
anyway.... all study is good study, just a small "heh, followed by a momentary chin scratch" that I thought to share.
sombertwin: PS at least on this forum probably stands for Photo shop, WIP means work in progress.
As far as getting my foundation together: Id say aside from just the basic copying/studying from photos, life drawing (live nude model drawing) really provided the biggest improvements to my work. Studying anatomy in the book is great but when combined with live models: cant be beat.
As far as printing, I really havent explored that realm too much as of yet. I just have a decent inkjet epson printer that Ive printed some photos of paintings with... glossy photo paper and matte. But I know thats a whole nother world of options that Ive yet to dip my toes in. Id try to track down "android" jones done to ask for some expert answers. He does a lot of fine quality printing from his work...
nice updates the master studies coming along nicely
deffinatly need to find myself some live figure drawing classes
but have a good one fellow dagger!
till next time
sketchbook updated October 6th
flying centaur vs. sky shark beasty update...
I think i got my shapes down, now I got to start with some detailing..... i want to throw down some armor bits on the centaur guy... but I dont want to obscure the fun anatomy work that ive already established... hmmm.....
likewise i plan on ref'in some exotic birds of prey for the coloring of the shark dude...theeeeeeen some cloud ref for the background... hmmm....
OmertA: thanks bruddah.
SHARK MOUTH WILL EAT YOUR FACE! NOM NOM NOM!
keep it up, it's coming along the anatomy of the shoulder and back of the monster's bothering me somewhat though. looks flat? i think it's because the anterior neck muscles seem as if they're inserting at the origin of the deltoid, which i don't think they would be.....?
sucks... Friday I had another good life drawing session.... from an old lady whom ironically I previously disliked drawing, as she had a somewhat lumpy body shape and a gigantic mole on her butt... which try as I may... i couldnt ignore.. moley moley moley moley.....
in any case where I didnt have a very fun time drawing in my analog SB, this time I brought my laptop and wacom and went to town. Maybe it was the time of day, earlier vs. the later LD sessions, but I had a good time and produced some nice studies.
SO i get home to work on some folio stuff and set up my workstation (am using my laptop as my primary cpu) and press power... i hear the boot up sound.... but my screen stays dark.....
EGADS! i say and do a long winded trouble shooting dance.... long technical story short, apparently with my particular laptop (2.4 17" macbook pro) they have a noted faulty nvidia graphics card that just so happens to fail after so many uses.... WTF!!! well lucky me, nvidia has extended the warranty for replacements w/apple so i just called the apple store, brought my findings and they sent it out. swew... else Im sure that wouldve cost a pretty penny to fix...
so now Im on my old g4 that I bought in 2001... and im sure its feeling the love cuz its purring once again, although I fear it wont be able to handle the heavy painting, but itll have to last till i get my laptop back.
along those lines Ive been looking into upgrading my desktop to a real processing beast, one of those new mac pros 8 core do it all setups... but dayam are they expensive.... But i figure if im going to make this my pro vehicle, then surely price shouldnt make or break it. Quality is number one as my G4 has lasted me for 9 years w/out any crashes so ive definately faith in the payoff in longevity from such machines.....
annnnnnnyways, heres the break in study w/my g4, ill see how heavy the pixels it can handle in a bit..
lalali: lol, yup scientifically proven, it will go for you face first and then spit you out leaving you maimed for the rest of your life. Isnt that the biggest f'd up aspect of great white shark attacks, in that they generally just confuse your body shape (surfers laying on their boards) as seals, thus they go in for the chomp chomp, but when they dont taste blubber but the relatively lean man flesh they spit it out and go on their way. Now you have a massive scar and or missing limbs all for a case of mistaken marine identity!!!!?
and youre right with the funky shoulder... i got to tweak it a bit more... good lookin out.
got my laptop back yesterday! kudos to the apple store over here for the quick fix.
the first was my warm up as they setup the model, then onto the composite of the 2mins, 5s 10s then one 20 pose. I tried to get some color for the 20 minute pose.... not a fan of that one,... but hey, alls well for practice.
its funny how Ill revisit old pieces that for one reason or another just bugged me... maybe it was just the genre, so outside what I would normally paint.... or perhaps the timeline.... i dont know, but this team chow piece just irritated me.... so I simplified... then I added... and back and forth...
anyway.... i think this is working quite a bit better.... better shapes at least....still a WIP... hmm....

went to another life drawing session yesterday... warm up sketch then a gif of the 1 mins (thought it was kind of cool as the model tried to do fluid "in motion" poses... then the collage similar in format as the last time.
heres a lil current event though: so the life drawing was going nice, was in my drawing groove, im thinking what a solid way to cap off my thursday. I finish up the last pose, gather my things and proceed to walk down to the ground floor and outside to grab my bike so I can be off and away.... only when I got outside, its 9:30pm now... my bike isnt there. gooooooood times. Im never going to ride an expensive bike onto any college campus again and leave it unattended ( i did have it locked up by the by).... bike theft apparently is very common for colleges... Youd think theyd take steps to prevent this but nope... there goes my $1000 mountain bike off into what Im sure are very incapable hands for such a nice ride. Police report filed, will scan craigslist for the next month or so.... I just wish I couldve caught the thief as I was walking home.... that wouldve been innnteresting....
working on my samurai piece again.... changed it up a bit.... think its working a bit better, probably add some more detailing then do a lighting pass....
also, Im getting ready (that means anywhere from the end of the week to the end of May. ) to relauch my website and throw down in the finally finished section... I figure I would just settle on 5 pieces as my minimum of portfolio pieces that I feel I can stand behind, id like to get 10 but Ive reasoned that Ive been waiting long enough and really want to start working on some legit jobs and Ive yet to advertise that Im available to do so.... sooooo no time like the present. I figure once Im working and can call myself a free lance illustrator/ concept artist... the rest of the pieces to fall into the folio will just happen naturally.
Ryan man, you've made sooo much progress since that first sketchbook post back in 2008, keep on at it! Being there watching you do some head concepts from scratch was a real treat, hope I'll run into you again!
life drawing once again... didnt really feel like doing the full figure all out for each session, maybe because I was just a lil tired and or that ive drawn this model before.... so after the 1's I just picked a focus... and.... errr... focused.
awesome new work, smoken!
I really like your figure studies. the big sheet with women sketches has some great poses.
your new folio piece looks pretty good already renderingwise but really dark to me. on my screen I have a hard time making out the details on his stomach and arm. But that might be me. I should check on different monitors anyway.
keep working this hard, man. especially some straight color studies. so far they still tend to be a bit greyish with your greyscale basework.
soooo, ive been hard at work... got abot 7 finishes.... 3+ more in the varying stages of finish... Im shooting for to have 10 finished in the next 2 weeks or so and then relaunch my website and post to all over gorilla interenet blitz status. Officially throwing my hat in with the pros in the freelance arena. Part of that decision comes from feeling like ive always been in one state or another of "not yet" ish', but i think with alot of us self critical artists... thats a never ending cycle that will ultimately lead to a large body of paint overs upon paint overs with nothing ever making the grade.... to which I say PHAW! and toss it to the weak sauce brigade. EnOUGH ive decided and hence onward to makin it happen forever onward.
enough my my rant,
heres the start of a Jean Leon study in the spirit getting my gladiator art helm on...
and a preview of a folio piece (space wolf portrait...)
Monotony: your absolutely right... there was some wierd super contrast discrepancy going on with my laptop, as i just got some really nice apple cinema displays which showed me the flaw... Im correcting that ish!
and true that w/ the color. Its certainly been a weak point, but Im working on it fosho. good looking out brotha.
alrighty... heres the last of my chosen 10 folio pieces in the works. I cranked all the way up and through my orignal (unbeknownst to many) bday deadline (turned 29 ) but I didnt want to rush my final piece, so im planning to finish it off this week and then launch the website and hit up the finally finished section and and... and karate art internet explosions all throughout the realm.
the last year of my twenties... time to finally officially grow up/graduate/let my art balls officially drop and parade my short and curlies to the world! ehh... umm... or something much less balzy and more arc de triumph style!
in any case im ranting, but Im going to simultaneously launch a blog w/ the site wherein I suppose Ill catalog my artscapes with a bit more candid detail and start the balancing act of "edit" within all the various venues for showing my process.. ie: this SB..... maybe Ill start a new one... hmm....
well my voyeurs that dont drop down some words of encouragement and those that do:
THANKYOU to Seage and andres333
it warms my wacom cockles to know that my work is raising some brows...
So for this mini update: the rough pass of tones for that aerial battle... going to really try to get some crazy cloud action and striking color/lighting with this one...
and then the second is a logo/splash page design for the launch of my website.... i love the old skull/coat of arms aesthetic if you havent caught on already... so the intro page with the folio link will have this image with some very old english scripty lettering for my name, and then some type of scroll like banner for the links to the website layout....
coming at you soon.
your creature designs are spot on. fabulous!
