Here's another book cover for the same company as last time.
It's a sort of mystery / romance book called "The Handyman". There are a bunch of different women in the story who all have some kind of relationship to this one guy. Very different illustrative concept for me I was way outside my comfort zone on this one, but I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. I worry that there are too many small objects in the foreground that will be lost in the printing, but maybe it will be ok. My original thought was either the sillouette or the tool box, but they said "Do both." so there it is. I hope it works. #2057 Last edited by Gilead; September 3rd, 2009 at 12:57 PM.. |

Last night I was at an event called "Music on Mill". Musicians and artists were set up along the street doing their thing. The last one tenth of a second of the clip is video of me drawing. http://www.abc15.com/mediacenter/loc...com&navCatId=3 Last edited by Gilead; September 5th, 2009 at 09:38 AM.. |

My entry into a contest to re-think the Owlbear monster from Dungeons and Dragons.
#2060 side note: In the small town of Prescott Arizona where I grew up ( not small anymore ) there is a rocky prominance on the west end of town called Thumb Butte. I have hiked it many times and nearly broken my neck as many times while rock climbing without equipment. Anyways that's Thumb Butte in the background of this scene. My friend Evan the Dungeon Master lived out past there so I have a mental association between D&D and this place. An explanation of my owlbear concept. #2061 and some sketches. #2062 #2063 #2064 Last edited by Gilead; September 6th, 2009 at 11:29 AM.. |

There should so TOTALLY be Owl Bears in the woods around Prescott! I really like your version (and not just because you mentioned me). I also think you did quite well on the cover art in 2057. I can't say if I'm missing detail in the small objects, but they look clear to me.

Hey Evan. Thanks, I don't know how well the small images read, but it's a little bit like my sign clients who want to include way too much information in a single sign and won't budge on that point so I just make the extra stuff very small and make the main point large.
In the handyman's tool kit are: a comb, a drinking straw, a feather and a goldfish cracker on a string. All of which are employed in the "service" of his female clients. This past weekend was the first North American Discworld convention. Here's me working on a painting behind my publisher's table. I was mostly there to attract attention to the booth and to keep myself from getting bored. #2067 Unlike most local conventions this one was extremely well attended and every single event was absolutely packed, so casual meetings with the guest of honor didn't take place like they usually do. My one encounter with Sir Terry Pratchett turned out by chance to be that we both went to use the head at the same time. I declined to go all fan boy while standing at the urinal so I really didn't get to capitalize on that meeting. I think in the future I may just abbreviate this story to "Sir Terry Pratchett and I hung out together at the Discworld convention." |

Love that painting in the photo as well. Are you going to post a photo of it here? Or did I miss it?

No you havn't missed it, I'm just not sure I like it yet. I'm also not concentrating on fantasy art right now because I have all this gallery stuff to do. So I only did that painting during the weekend to be part of the entertainment. So that one it may sit on the shelf for a while yet.

These are for a contest on Art Order http://artorder.blogspot.com/
I'm only posting them here because they want a link to an image rather than a file in the e-mail. I tried another service last time for the owlbear thing and it didn't work so I'm going to try it this way. The job is to design a Mayan god of hurricanes. The first step was silhouettes so I did a few. #2075 They only want to see 5 of them so I chose these ones. #2076 Last edited by Gilead; September 15th, 2009 at 10:16 AM.. |

SIGH, I didn't win the owlbear contest.
Guess I'll just have to console myself with having a month-long one man show at the gallery in Tempe followed by having my work in a new gallery in Scottsdale which is only the largest and most prestigious gallery district in the world. Woe is me, will my troubles never cease? Meanwhile here's...this. #2079 |

swampdragon, Thanks.
The Stepping Stone Gallery is right off of Mill Ave. 414 South Mill. On the South West corner of 4th and Mill. It's hard to find because it's upstairs in a set of shops behind the street shops. The Scottsdale location will be much better. It's right on Marshal Way in the middle of a bunch pf other galleries. I don't know the address yet, but it will be open in a month and will be call the Rene' Gade gallery...that's a pun. Speaking of puns; yes grenappels that one's a riff on Nosferatu the classic 1922 silent movie which was the earliest and in some ways the creepiest ever screen adaptation of Bram Stokers "Dracula." I overheard a conversation at a sci fi con and I thought someone actually said "Mousefuratu" which they had not, but when I asked them they all laughed and said I really needed to draw that, so there it is #2080 |

This is a podcast of an interview with me at the Discworld convention. There's a lot of background noise, but you can make out most of it OK. Not a lot of information that you two guys don't already know about me with the possible exception of what my voice sounds like.
